Dear Parents Art Show The Art Show last Saturday night was a huge success and enjoyed greatly by all those that attended. On behalf of the school community I would like to thank the organising committee and especially Natasha Bowman. Mrs Dhue was rightfully acknowledged on the evening for the enormous effort she gave in ensuring all pieces of children’s artwork were completed and framed. Mrs Dhue was extremely well supported by other staff, students and parents. This is another example of our community coming together to support our P&C and promote the work of our students. Well done everyone!

In-term Swimming Changes 2018 As a school we have been looking at making In-term Swimming work better for our school. While ensuring students learn to swim, it is important to make lessons relevant. For this reason we have decided to have our Year 5 students participate in beach swimming lessons. The following changes have been endorsed by the Marmion School Board:

No swimming lessons will be undertaken in the first 6 weeks of Term 1. This will minimise the disruption to the normal learning program at this crucial time when routines and classroom expectations are being established.

Swimming lessons for PP- Yr. 4 will be held at Craigie Leisure Centre. We will strive to have these lessons in the second half of the year. (Confirmed for weeks 9 & 10 Term 3, 2018)

Year 5 students will undertake beach swimming lessons in Term 4. (Confirmed weeks 7&8 Term 4, 2018)

Year 6 students will undertake surfing in Term 4. Please note In-term swimming for Year 6 students will not take place.

Should you wish to contact me to discuss these changes please do so through the office. Mrs Watson Retires Yesterday we said goodbye to Mrs Watson at the Student Assembly. Mrs Watson has worked for twenty years at Marmion Primary School. During that time she has worked in many roles. She will be remembered most for her time in the Library. Our students presented her with a book about their experiences in the library and the support she gave them. We wish her well in her retirement. Jack the Wagtail Challenge This annual fundraising event will take place on Friday 10 November. At yesterday’s Student Assembly all children were provided information about the origin of this initiative. Mr Buck our former Deputy Principal spoke about his involvement in setting up this charity that aims to raise funds for Burns Research. Since its inception this school has raised in excess of $180 000. This is just an amazing outcome. An information sheet and the sponsorship forms will be sent home today. Our current value is….. Resilience means when faced with difficult and challenging situations and people, being able to stop getting extremely angry, down, or worried. Controlling my behaviour when I am very upset and calming down within a reasonable period of time and bouncing back to work and play. Please consider discussing Resilience with your child/ren this week.

Vandalism Around The School Over the school holidays some unwanted visitors damaged school property and moved these items to the bushland off Telford Street. Whilst school playgrounds can be accessed after school hours we encourage community members to report any undesirable behaviour to the police on 131 444.

Personal Use Items (Booklists for 2018) Personal Use Items (PUIs) lists were recently sent home with all students for ordering of the 2018 items. Items can be ordered through Campion via the internet www.campion.com.au using “EAX6” as your school code. Alternatively, the lists can be completed and returned to school by Friday 10 November 2017. Student workbooks appearing on the list should be ordered through the supplier as they may not be readily available in 2018 either from the supplier or school unless ordered in 2017. All orders made through Campion will be home delivered. The delivery service this year is FREE for orders placed prior to November 10. After this date a delivery charge of up to $8 will be incurred. Your home delivery order will be dispatched the week ending December 8. Delivery of orders placed after the cut-off date cannot be guaranteed prior to the commencement of school.

Scholastic Book Club - Erica Robinson The latest Scholastic Catalogue should have come home with the children this week. We will be available in the library to take orders on Wednesday 1 November and Thursday 2 November from 8.30am to about 9am. We ask that all orders come to us at the library as we need to check payment is correct and all the child’s details are correct. Orders should not be placed in the red P&C box in the office or given to teachers. Payment can be made in cash, credit card, cheque (payable to Scholastic Australia) or online. At this time our school is not registered for LOOP ordering so all orders still need to come to us for placement. We also offer the service of keeping the order secret from the children if parents wish to use the books as presents, contacting the parents directly to arrange delivery. The school library benefits directly from Scholastic by receiving 20% of the order value as credit to use in the Scholastic Shop. Thanks for your continued support.

Thank You Morning Tea As always, staff are most appreciative of the wonderful support provided to the school by parents in numerous capacities throughout the year and to show our appreciation we would like to invite you to a Thank You Morning Tea. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 9 November for a Thank You morning tea. Please RSVP to the office 9246 3422.

Student Details It is important that student records are kept up to date. If you have any details such as address, phone number, mobile, emergency contacts or health care details that have changed could you please notify the front office. In an emergency situation it is critical that we have all students contact details correct.

Western Australian Premier, Mark McGowan, has a message for Year 5 student, Frazer Rickson As part of a PEAC project in Term 3, Frazer Rickson (Room 9, Year 5) wrote, illustrated and published a narrative highlighting the effects of plastic pollution on our marine wildlife. His book “The Problem with Plastic” has been read and well received by none other than the Premier of Western Australia, Mr Mark McGowan. Mr McGowan’s letter to Frazer, as posted on his ‘Mark McGowan’ Facebook page (28th Sept, 2017), was as follows: Dear Frazer, Thank you for sending me your story, “The Problem with Plastic.” It was a delight to read, and I enjoyed the illustrations of the story of Harrison the Boxfish and his friends, who are trying to deal with plastic in the ocean. But there was one part in particular that has stuck with me. Mr Lobster (the principal) wrote to the Premier about the plastic in the ocean. The next day the Premier read it, and “he thought about the fish and coral and how he would feel if the beautiful coast could not be passed on through the generations in a pristine condition.” And I do think about that. I think about the world that we will leave behind for you, Frazer. I think about the world that I will leave behind for my two sons, Samuel and Alexander, and my daughter Amelia. And I know that something must be done so that young people like yourself can experience the wonders of our State for generations to come. So we’ve done something about it.

By now, you’ve probably seen the news: we’re banning single-use plastic bags from July 1 next year. And it’s thanks to young Western Australians like yourself who wrote to me and the other Ministers; that passion and drive to bring about change in this world gives me hope for the future. Thank you, Frazer. And I look forward to your next book – hopefully by then, without the plastic bag bindings. Best regards, Mark

A Massive “Thank you!” from Munchi Monster The students of Room 9 are very impressed and extremely grateful to all those people who have been

depositing their soft plastics into our school recycling unit. As a result of the fantastic support from our school community, Munchi Monster is regularly being filled with soft plastics that can be recycled and used to create usable products. We are managing to fill 1 – 2 bags each week! To keep things running smoothly, we have needed to create a class roster to monitor, manage and deliver the plastics, as the job has become too big for only a small number of students to handle on their own. This has created a perfect opportunity for us to work together as a team to help achieve a positive outcome for our environment. Thank you!

Competition to Design a Logo for Reusable Shopping Bags To provide local shoppers with an alternative to plastic bags, Lachlan, Ben and Sam will again be selling reusable calico shopping bags similar to the ones they sold in Term 3. This time, however, they are going to need your help. Room 9 will be running a competition to design a new logo that will be printed onto each of the bags. Just imagine how good it would feel to see your design displayed on shopping bags used by members of your local community! You will also feel great satisfaction knowing that the bags you have helped to design will save many sea creatures from the devastating effects of plastic bags ending up in their habitat. Details of our logo competition will be presented at our next assembly. Thank you and remember to say “NO” to plastic bags.

BIG IDEAS NIGHT! 22 NOVEMBER 2017 Please come along to the Big Ideas Night and have your say. In the past twelve months the P & C has spent over $50,000. The money has been spent on technology, music, sporting equipment, furniture and more. Have your say and help get the ball rolling for the next few years. The Marmion School Community is amazing and we need your help in both raising the money but also in spending it! Keep your eyes out for the Big Ideas Form coming your way soon.

Online: you can cancel your current online order and redo it to add the ice cream If you plan to order on the paper, and haven’t done so yet, just hand write it on the form at the cost of $1.00 and include the value in your payment.

Orders close online MONDAY 30th October, or if using the paper form it is due back FRIDAY 27th October.

If this is your last year at school, this may be your last chance for a spot. You can see a copy of the roster on our face book page, Mar-mites Facebook page or you can view the hard copy pinned up in the canteen. Please let Katie know if you’d like to pick your date by emailing her on [email protected]
