Did you know that 15 June is NATIONAL SMILE DAY? This is a day for everyone to share the power of the smile. Starting the day with a smile is easier than trying to get there later in the day. When you smile at someone you are telling them that they are valued and worth the smile that you just gave them. Smiles are moral boosters and confidence builders. Challenge yourself to smile more often today, not only will it lift your mood it can help others relax and relieve stress.

Dear Parents and Community Members School Review The School Review Validation Day took place on Tuesday. The initial feedback from the reviewers was very positive. We will receive a written report from the reviewers in the next week or so. This report will then be made available to our school community to view on our school website. I would like to thank all school staff for their involvement in the review process. It has been a very busy time with Semester One Reports also being completed by our teachers. Special thanks to the members of our school community who also gave up their time to attend a session that focussed on parent and community involvement with the school. Dogs On the School Site In my last newsletter I stressed that there should be no dogs on the school site between 8.00am and 4.00pm. It is with considerable distress that I inform the community we had a very young student bitten on the face while playing after school yesterday afternoon. I am sure all our thoughts go out to the student and her family. The incident occurred prior to 4.00pm and involved a dog that was not on a lead. I need to be able to speak with the owner of the dog and ask that that person makes contact with me. The City of Joondalup have been informed of this incident and I will meet with their staff to discuss what other actions will need to take place to ensure we have a safe site. I believe we all need to act to prevent this from occurring again. Please ask dog owners to leave the school site if they are on our site between 8.00am and 4.00pm. If they do not respond appropriately, please inform myself or a staff member and a member of Admin will speak with them. Influenza Season We are again at the time of year when many of us suffer from the effects of colds and viruses. In some classes we have had up to 10 students away from a class in one day. Today we have a total 52 students absent. I urge all parents to ensure their child is well enough to come to school. Children that are ill should be kept at home. This ensures they recover quickly and reduces the spread of the illness to other children. Should you require further information please use the link below from the Department of Health https://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/S_T/Staying-healthy-in-winter 2 of our Year 6 students, Maddie and Elsie were selected in a German Schools choir and performed on Wednesday night at Government House.
Kind Regards Ian Herbert PRINCIPAL

Student Details
It is important that student records are kept up to date. If you have any details such as address, phone number, mobile emergency contacts or health care details that have changed could you please notify the front office. In an emergency situation it is critical that we have all students contact details correct.
2020 Kindy Enrolment KINDERGARTEN 2019: Children whose birthdates fall within 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016 inclusive are eligible for Kindergarten in 2020. Enrolment applications are currently open and must be made to the school before the closing date of Friday 26 July 2019. Should you know of families who do not have a child currently attending the school and are intending to have a child in Kindy here next year, please advise them to contact the school office to ensure their enrolment is lodged before the closing date. Lost Property
We have a number of valuable lost items that have been handed into the front office including watches, sunglasses, jewellery and purses. If you have lost one of these items please see the front office and describe your item in details to claim it back.
Parking and Student Safety Parents are reminded to only park in designated parking bays. This ensures students have the best opportunity to be seen by moving vehicles. The Kiss and Drive area is just that. You must not leave your vehicle unattended in this area. I urge more families to consider using this area to drop off and pick up students. Parents are also reminded to not use the staff car park at the front of the school and the access road off Radbourne St as drop off points as these need to have clear access. Your support of these requests will make our school safer for the students and other pedestrians. It will be even more critical on wet days when the volume of traffic at pick up increases significantly.
West Australian Young Readers’ Book Award (WAYRBA) 2019 WAYBRA is a readers’ choice award organised on a statewide basis for young readers. There are three shortlist categories: picture books; young readers; and older readers. All books on the list have been nominated by the young readers of Western Australia. Picture and young reader books are currently on display in the library for borrowing and on completion of reading students can vote on how they rated the book by completing a voting slip and placing it in the jar. Votes will close on 27 September 2019, and an ongoing tally is on display to help promote and encourage students to try the books. Students can be a part of an Author and Illustrator winning an award. For more information visit https://wayrba.org.au/
