DENTAL INSIGNIA ( October 2014 - March 2015 )

Saveetha Dental College being a pioneer in dental field innovations crossed one more milestone in its achievements. “Dental Insignia”, is one such event which is first of its kind among dental colleges in India to acknowledge, motivate and reward our students, faculty and non - teaching staffs.

Motivating students is one of the greatest challenges we face in academics. With little control, if any over the external factors that influence students behaviour, we do play a vital role in shaping what results at the end of the course. In fact the choices our institute selects can make a positive impact on students motivation.

We do compliment everybody for their efforts. We regularly reward our students and staffs every six months which instigates them to excel in their assigned work. This serves as a prodding factor for all the students and staffs to achieve greater heights in delivery of dental health care.

This time the session was held on 07.04.2015 at the M. M. Convention Centre. The function was presided by Dr. R. Rajagopal, Advisor, Saveetha University, Dr. N. D. Jayakumar, Dean, Saveetha Dental College. Dr. S. M. Balaji, the renowned Oral And Maxillofacial Surgeon was the Chief guest of honour. He handed over the trophies to the achievers of various activities.

Blood Donation Camp

Blood Is Meant To Circulate:

Youth Red Cross (YRC) Society of Saveetha Dental College aims to meet the requirement of precious blood by organising voluntary blood donation camps at its campus every year. Many accident victims, innocent children suffering from Thalassaemia, Pregnant women, Cancer patients and other people in life threatening situations die due to shortage of blood. Voluntary blood donation is a selfless service and an expression of love for mankind. Blood knows no caste, creed, colour. religion and race. Hence on 29.04.15, around 53 students of Saveetha Dental College actively participated and volunteered themselves to donate blood.

The program was inaugurated by Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, Chancellor and Dr. R. Rajagopal, Advisor, Saveetha University. The event was successfully coordinated by Dr. N. D. Jayakumar, Principal, YRC - Chairman and Dr. R. Pradeep Kumar, YRC - Program officer, Saveetha Dental College. We had a dedicated team of qualified and trained professionals who followed stringent screening procedures, careful documentation and good Laboratory Practices for collecting, processing and testing blood.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN DENTISTRY - PART 2

DENTAL ARMAMENTARIUM

Arms All The Way!

By Ms. Janani. B ( CRRI )

Well this sounded cool when we entered the second academic year at our dental school! By the way I've wondered several what this paper would do to me! The 'n' number of instruments on line with sponges waiting to be stitched with suture material!! Ugh!!! I can still remember the time at my friend's house meddling with arch bars!! By the time we arrived at the understanding point of this subject the dead lines started to screw us.

Each department had an array of instruments to be studied. Every single one had its own importance. Especially the extraction forceps, which was always a nightmare! Picking up the wrong one would make the staff turn red!

The next bomb blast would be the Periodontics instruments!! It really took a hell lot of time figuring out the difference between a curette and a scaler! Tough times continued with conservative and Endodontic instruments. Finally there comes the Orthodontic instruments which we never touched! At last the battle ended with viva question, spotters and sutures. Somehow we managed to get through with decent scores.

But now looking back the paper as a house surgeon we realise the amount of knowledge gathered through it. The finer detail of every little instrument we use in our day to day practice, the instruments which became our 6th finger, etc., are all result of such a subject. We still regret at times thinking about stuff we never bothered to learn as it greatly reflects in our practice especially during emergency situations. For example certain Endodontic and Surgical instruments are areas which we did not educate ourselves enough.

But still the grace period is always extended, as far as dentistry is concerned! Its important to build our basics as strong as possible and start constructing over with  the new inventions. There are various ways to educate ourselves with the upcoming technologies through CDE programmes and lectures. All we need is a never ending thirst for knowledge and an open mind towards change. Learning is a never ending process which keeps us on track in the competition, it aids in translating vision into reality.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN DENTISTRY - PART 2

FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY

By Ms. Senthamizh Sindhu ( IV Year )

Forensic Odontology is the identification discipline based upon the recognition of unique features present in each person’s dental structures. It comes into use when identification by the use of friction ridge skin is not possible. It relies on the detailed knowledge of the teeth and jaws possessed by a dentist. This skill incorporates an education in dental anatomy, radiographs and their interpretation, pathology, dental materials, developmental anomalies and a thorough familiarity with the many methods of charting and abbreviations in dental treatment progress notes.

Forensic odontologists are highly experienced, specially trained dentists who use their expertise to help identify unknown remains and trace bite marks to a specific individual.

Forensic odontologists, also called forensic dentists, are typically called in to:

• Identify human remains that cannot be identified using face recognition, fingerprints or other means

• Identify bodies in mass fatalities, such as plane crashes and natural disasters

• Determine the source of bite mark injuries, in cases of assault or suspected abuse

• Estimate the age of skeletal remains

• Testify in cases of dental malpractice

The forensic odontologist may be called in by police officers, the medical examiner or the coroner.

In death cases, the forensic odontologist attends the autopsy and takes photographs, cranial measurements, dental impressions and x-rays from the remains. These samples are then compared to those of known missing individuals. If a match can be made, the remains can be identified.

.

Page of 47 59

Page 50: Newsletter may 2015

CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN DENTISTRY - PART 2

In cases where bite marks are found on the body of a victim or suspected perpetrator, or on food, chewing gum or another item,  the forensic odontologist uses the same procedure to try to determine or exclude potential sources of the bite marks.

The forensic odontologist then writes a detailed report explaining what was done and what conclusions can be made.

Working conditions

Forensic odontologists usually work as regular dentists much of the time, performing forensic examinations as needed at the request of local law enforcement or the medical examiner. In death cases, the forensic odontologist may go to the crime or disaster scene. Otherwise, the measurements and x-rays are taken as part of the autopsy.

Since crimes and disasters can happen at any time, a forensic odontologist “on call” must be ready to work long hours, day or night, on holidays and on weekends.

The work is highly detailed, demands extremely fine motor skills and requires extraordinary precision and accuracy. Complex equipment, including computers, microscopes and other technologies, may be used in the identification process.

Forensic odontology requires attention to detail and the ability to work patiently to complete a lengthy process step by step without rushing. The forensic odontologist must be able to make conclusions based solely on the physical evidence available.

The forensic odontologist must keep accurate and complete records. Such close involvement with the investigation of crimes and mass disasters can be emotionally disturbing.

Thus,A strong mind and a strong conscience with a good knowledge in the dental subjects can make you a best forensic odontologist.

BEAT THE HEAT

This Summer all we experience is sweat, sweat sores, heat boils, dehydration etc; which lands up getting us irritated all the time! From my own experience and being a nutritionist as well, I am sharing few tips which can help you to beat the heat during this hot summer! How can we do it?? Wanna Know?? I feel the following three boons can help us to to beat the summer heat!

1. Water, 2. Fruits and Fluids, 3. Oil

WATER

Drinking moderate amount of water in Summer carries several health benefits for individuals. Our body carries 70% water thus needs adequate quantity of it to function properly.

Let’s see what does drinking 7 - 8 glass of water a day truly bring for your health,

➤ COMBATS REHYDRATION

Water is a wonder drug dealing dehydration. 7 - 9 glass water intake a day regulates body temperature and replaces the essential electrolytes lost due to excessive sweating.

➤ IMPROVES MENTAL HEALTH

For mental health, mental creativity and mental productivity water played vital role. Consuming sufficient amount of water liquefies brain blood that makes brain more efficient, creative and productive. You think better and thus work better. It also combats sudden mental strokes during summer and cures headache as well.

➤ DEALS DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS

Drinking good quantity of water flushes out toxins and poisonous compounds out of body. It

regulates digestion avoiding constipation, acidity, kidney stone and stomach cramps.

➤IMPARTS BEAUTY (WOW!!)

Drinking adequate amount of water rejuvenates skin. It keeps skin hydrated making it

radiant and glowy. It also combats acne and ageing.

➤IMPARTS ENERGY IN BODY

When body exhausts, water works like an energy drink. It boosts energy body fighting

against Fatigue, Dizziness, Sluggishness, Lethargy and other heat related illness.

➤CURES CRAMPS AND SPRAINS

Drinking Moderate amount of water a day lubricates muscles and joints that is a cure

against cramps and sprains.

➤WATER THERAPY

It is simply starting a day with consuming 5 - 6 glass of water altogether. A research says,

divide your body weight by 20, say, 60 Kgs/ 20 = 3. So consume minimum of three litres of water daily.

FRUITS AND FLUIDS

Added upto water, fruits and its juices also have a good effect. In summer, we all try to have an ice creams, salads, juices along with our food but the best way to reduce heat in our body is to avoid the ice cream and juices and increase taking the fruits as such which is more good to health. Fruits are good to decrease heat on body.

➤HIGH RICH WATER CONTAINING FRUITS

Water melon, Black Grapes, Orange, Guava, Kiwi, Banana, Gooseberry, Strawberry, Pineapple, Plums, Apple, Cherries, Mango. If you are taking juices, it is also better to take the fruit juices without ice to reduce the heat.

IMPORTANCE OF OILING YOUR HAIR

You must have heard your elders say you to nourish your hair with oil. This is one of the best way to pamper your hair in a natural way. But with growing work stress we tend to ignore it and later feel depressed with hair fall problems! In fact people have been opting hot oil treatment for hair since ages. This is due to the benefits you get after you oil your hair. Use coconut, Almond or gingelly oil to gain the massage benefits to the fullest.

Here are a few benefits of hot oil treatment,

COOLING EFFECT: Our human body normally gets heated up with day to day stress of life! This in turn damages our body metabolism. We all know that maintaining the normal body temperature is mandatory for our body to function properly. Being summer our body is prone for increase in temperature. Massaging our hair with hot oil massage relaxes the hair roots and gives a cooling effect to the body.

This is not a big job to think or plan

about. All we have to do is, just apply any

oil (must be hot while applying to give its

benefits!) and massage your scalp. Let it

soak in the hot oil and get nourished for

about 30 mins before you shampoo your

hair. In that half an hour, We can do our

chores as usual.

Believe me, I have been benefitted with all the points I have written in this article. Just give

them a try!!

HAPPY SUMMER

FAREWELL PARTY

SAYING GOODBYE WITH A PARTY - NOT TEARS, PERIODONTICS PGs BATCH OF 2012

Why does it take a minute to say hello and forever to say goodbye???

We became friends with our seniors the very 1st day we joined the new department and eventually we call our department as the “Periodontics Family”. It was a wonderful journey with our seniors for two years. We all grew together, worked, had fun, had our own tiny tit-bits which used to take less than an hour to resolve and finally we all learnt one thing, “Together we stand, divided we fall”.

Our senior batch of Partha, Waleed and Varghese was a unique batch depicting social integrity as our dean Dr. N. D. Jayakumar quotes them as Amar, Akbar, Anthony. Their unity presented as the unity among three different religions which also bound our whole department as one.

And then there came a time to bid adieu to our loving seniors by an informal dinner party at The Green Park Hotel, Vadapalani on 26.4.2015. It was a great time which we would cherish for the rest of our lives and wish them all the very best as they begin their new lives and prove to the world that we were guided by the “Best of the Staffs” in the world.

Goodbyes are not forever

Goodbyes are not the end

They simply mean

We will miss you

Until we meet again.
