NEWSLETTER MMXX 2nd QUARTER

THE EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERUSALEM Lieutenancy of Victoria

A proposal to all members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre My warm greetings to all members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sep-ulchre of Jerusalem. Upon my arrival at the Order as Grand Master, I wanted to reflect on how I can be present not only at central offices and occasionally at Investitures,

but also relate more closely to you, the Members of our Pontifical Institution. Ours is a "large parish" and, as in all large families, sometimes distance and num-bers can make relations less personal. I would like to create initiatives through our existing means of communications to enter into dialogue by listening to your questions and offering food for thought. From next month, a new section will be added to our website www.oessh.va and our Newsletter: Grand Master’s Corner. Each month it will host the reply to one of the most significant letters that I will receive. I would prefer questions relating to our Order, to its life within the Church, our Christian life, our commitment in the Holy Land. I would like your questions to be less formal and more authentic, while always respecting the norms regarding data protection and confidentiality with references to people and places. You can send your short letters to the Grand Master at the ad-dress [email protected] indicating the "Grand Master's Corner" as the subject or by post to the address of the Grand Magisterium (OESSH - 00120 Vatican). To communicate is to get involved, to dialogue is to get to know each other, to talk is to grow in mutual respect. In the hope that this initiative may bear good fruit. Fernando Cardinal Filoni

Lieutenant’s Corner—These Testing Times Dear Knights & Dames, I hope this newsletter finds you all well. My thoughts and prayers remain with all of you as Melbourne continues to be challenged with COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreaks. The continued uncertainty about the future is challenging for everyone. In particular we need to remember our members and their families in hotspot postcodes. I have been incredibly impressed by how our clergy and their parishioners have embraced zoom and social media and how they continue to creatively engage their parishioners in these challenging times. We had planned to have a virtual pilgrimage over zoom in July and then we reconsidered since we thought we would be back to 50 parishioners/members for our August mass. At present it is really difficult to predict if we can go ahead with this mass. We were all delighted to hear that Knight Julien O’Connell was awarded the Medal of the Order (OM) of Australia in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his exemplary service to the community, in particular acknowledging his contributions to health, the aged care sector and to higher education. He was previously awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2012 in honour of his work in the community. On the 27th of June we heard the wonderful news that Pope Francis had appointed Monsignor Gregory Charles Bennet, former Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, as the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Sale in eastern Victoria. Many of us know Monsignor Greg and recognise his many years of service to the Church here in Melbourne. While we are sad to see him leave Melbourne we all recognise the gifts he will bring the Diocese of Sale. In May it was announced that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Mark Edwards the sixth Bishop of Wagga Wagga, a diocese that stretches from Griffith to Tocumwal and Albury to Tumbarumba. Bishop Mark is very well known in Melbourne for his support of youth and young adults. In accepting his appointment, Bishop Mark expressed his gratitude and humility to the Holy Father: ‘I am deeply humbled by this appointment and wish to express my thanks and good wishes to all the people of Melbourne, with whom I have been for the last six years. As Pope Francis often reminds us, we stand at the edge of a new era. We must continually ask ourselves, “How are we to be Church? How are we to be effective missionary disciples and share the Good News in the context of 21st century Australia?” As Knights and Dames of the EOHSJ we are also being asked how we can be effective missionary disciplines. I would like to thank and acknowledge those who have contributed to our Holy Land appeal. We raised $11,500 for the Holy Land appeal. If you would still like to contribute to the appeal please make contact with our treasurer, Knight Andrew Price and he can facilitate your donation. As you know, we had to postpone our EOHSJ information night for potential new members. I am grateful to those who have connected with potential new members. I would be very grateful if you can please continue to engage with potential members and I am happy to speak to them at any time. Can you please share with them the information on page 18 of this newsletter which provides potential members with an overview of the order and details on what is required to become a member. Ideally we need to have all applications sent to the Commission in Rome by the end of July. We need to continue to pray for medical staff and all those who are working under great pressure to support our community. I hope all of you remain safe and may God bless all of you during these challenging times Warmest best wishes, Agnes Sheehan, DCHS Lieutenant

It is with great joy that the Feast of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine, is celebrated in all the Lieutenancies of the Equestrian Order around 25 October – the exact date of the Feast according to the liturgical calendar. It was Patriarch Luigi Barlassina (1920-1947), on the occasion of his solemn entry into the Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre on 15 July 1920, and the consecration of the diocese to Mary, who invoked the title of “Queen of Palestine” for the first time. The special relationship of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepul-chre dates back to the pontificate of John Paul II. In 1983, 50 years after the institution of the Feast, Saint John Paul II – addressing the Knights and Dames of the Lieutenancies of Northern and Central Italy – urged them to be witnesses of Christ in everyday life and to continue the work of the Order in the Holy Land under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Ten years later, in 1993, the then Grand Master of the Order, Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio, asked Saint John Paul II to declare of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine, Patroness of the Order. The Holy Father replied on 21 January 1994 by a decree granting the request.

PRAYING MARY FOR PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND Our Lady, Queen of Palestine, extend your hand over the Holy Land and over all who live there:

Jews, Muslims, Druze and Christians, Palestinians, Israelis, migrant workers and refugees. Our Lady, intercede for us all and especially for the Church, the Body of your Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord. We have been sent to preach Good News to all in the land that is yours and His, the land of the patriarchs, kings, prophets, apostles and of the first community formed to walk in the way of your Son, the Mother Church of Jerusalem. This mission needs the courage and the perseverance, the wisdom and the faith that were yours, pray for us. On your knees He, who was your Lord and Master, learnt to speak and to pray, to act and to obey. We ask you to teach us to speak and to pray, to act and to obey today in the land called to be holy. In the midst of war and hatred, walls, occupation and discrimination, fear and rejection, instruct us how to be instruments of justice and peace, pardon and reconciliation. We affirm with you that he is our peace. Show us the way to incarnate in our life as Church both fidelity to your Son and an embracing love for all in this land, especially for those who are the poorest and the most excluded, the homeless, the refugees, the prisoners, those who are maltreated, oppressed and are vic-tims of injustice. Our Lady, Queen of Palestine, you are our mother, given to us by your Son on the Cross. With you, we are called to be witnesses to the Resurrection that already heralds His Kingdom. Modeling ourselves on you, we ask Him to anoint us as Spirit filled proclaimers of the Good News that He has vanquished death by His death on the Cross and has given life to those in the tombs. May we, members of His Body the Church, be living signs that point to the Kingdom that is already among us. Amen. Mother Mary, Queen of Palestine, pray for us.

Our Lady Queen of Palestine

Bishop Edwards, who will turn 61 next month, was born in Indonesia and grew up in Adelaide, Darwin and Melbourne’s southeast, at-tending St Leonard’s Primary School and Mazenod College.

Mazenod was founded by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the order he would eventually join.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1986 and has held lead-ership positions within the Australian Province of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne on November 7, 2014, and ordained bishop the following month.

Bishop Edwards’ priestly ministry has largely centred on sec-ondary school and seminary education, including serving as rector of Iona College in Brisbane and as aspirants’ master and novice master at St Mary’s Seminary in Mulgrave.

In addition to his priestly formation and theological training, Bishop Edwards completed a science degree at Monash Uni-versity, where he also obtained a doctorate in philosophy.

In a letter to the faithful of Wagga Wagga, Bishop Edwards described his appointment “as a call from God to be with you and journey with you as disciple, brother and bishop”.

“Together, as a community of missionary disciples, we will worship, love and evangelise,” he said.

“I am aware that I have much to learn, particularly about par-ish life and the joys and challenges of being a Catholic in Wagga Wagga. Keen to listen to your stories and those of the Diocese, I come humbly, with deep interest and love.

“Please pray for me that I may offer the service that the Dio-cese needs. I will pray for you.”

Bishop Edwards paid tribute to Bishop Gerard Hanna for his more than 14 years of leadership in the Diocese before retire-ment due to ill health in 2016. He also thanked Archbishop Christopher Prowse of Canberra and Goulburn, who has served as apostolic administrator of Wagga Wagga for almost four years – and will continue to do so until Bishop Edwards’ installation.

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge said it is “a joy to welcome the appointment, especially after such a long wait”.

A date for Bishop Edwards’ installation is 22nd July at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Wagga

New Bishop of Sale Diocese

MEDIA RELEASE On the Feast Day of St Cyril of Alexandria, The Holy Father has an-nounced Monsignor Gregory Charles Bennett, former Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, as the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Sale in eastern Victoria. In accepting this appointment, Bishop-Elect Bennett said, “I am hum-bled by Pope Francis’ nomination of me to be the next Bishop of Sale. It is an enormous responsibility and privilege to be asked to undertake this appointment.” Well known and loved in the Melbourne Archdiocese, the Bishop-elect noted that whilst welcoming this new appointment, there will be sad-ness in leaving the Archdiocese of Melbourne, “I have served in the Archdiocese for 28 years and my heart is grateful for the many people who have formed, nurtured, cared, and supported me throughout my formation and my ministry.” The second of four children to Len (RIP) and Maureen Bennett. Bish-op-elect Bennett was educated in Victoria and completed his second-ary education through Braemar College, Woodend. Ordained in 1992 by Archbishop Little, he served as Assistant Priest in the parishes of Grovedale-Torquay, Greensborough and as Admin-istrator of Seymour Parish before undertaking and completing a Mas-ter’s of Science in pastoral counselling at Loyola College Baltimore MD, USA, and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Angelicum in Rome. Upon his return from further studies, Bishop-Elect Bennet was ap-pointed as Director, Ministry to Priests and as Director of Ongoing Formation for Clergy in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, followed by later appointments as the inaugural Director of the Archbishop’s of Evangelisation, and Parish Priest of St Bede’s, North Balwyn. In 2012 Archbishop Hart appointed the Bishop-elect as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia and, in that same year, he was appointed a Prelate of Honour by Pope Benedict XVI. He has served as a Dioc-esan Consultor and on numerous committees of the Archdiocese including: the Archbishop’s Personnel Board, Curia, the Diocesan Finance Council, Catholic Capital Grants Ltd and on advisory bodies associated with Catholic Education Melbourne. In March 2020, Arch-bishop Peter A Comensoli appointed him as Parish Priest of St Jo-seph’s, West Brunswick. “Mgr Greg has given a generous and deep commitment to the people of God in Melbourne over these 28 years,” said Archbishop Comen-soli. “I am delighted at his appointment, but there is sadness to lose such a wonderful servant of God from our own Archdiocese. The people of Sale are blessed to have him as their new shepherd and I know they will welcome him warmly. He has also been a personal friend over many years and I wish to acknowledge his wonderful support to me in my own ministry. “On behalf of the people of Melbourne, we offer our prayers for Mgr Greg and for the people of Sale.” Details regarding the episcopal ordination are still to be determined.

ACU Pro-Chancellor Julien O’Connell has been awarded an upgraded Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Hon-ours List for his service to the community.

Mr O’Connell was previously awarded an AM (Member of the Order) medal in 2013, in honour of his work in the community. This year, his service has been further recognised with a prestigious AO (Officer of the Order) medal, celebrating his contributions to community health in the aged care sector, and to higher education.

ACU Chancellor John Fahey AC, GCSG congratulated Mr O’Connell for the role he has played in improving the lives of Australians.

“He is held in the highest esteem, not only in university, business and political circles, but also within the Catholic community.”

Mr O’Connell has had a long and distinguished career in insurance, accounting and risk management, and has served as an executive on several public bodies, including:

Prayers From Emeritus Bishop Peter Elliott

PRAYERS IN TIME OF A PANDEMIC The early Chris ans prayed in the church of the home. Once more, in troubled mes when public worship has to be re-stricted, we are called to pray in “the domes c church”, always aware of the promise of Jesus, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.” (Ma hew 18:20).

In this challenging me Lord Jesus Christ, our true physician and healer, be merciful to us and bring us your aid in these troubled times. Heal all our sickness and every affliction of your people.

Drive out our infirmities of soul and body; free us from all disease and especially from this pestilence.

We place in your gentle Heart the elderly, the frail, people with disability, children, young people and families, our indigenous peoples, those who are poor, lonely and isolat-ed. As you walk with us, free them from fear, and give them patience and hope together with our loving care.

n your mercy deal also with the causes of our pitiful condi-tion, that in curing our lack of faith and spiritual weakness, you may also remedy our bodily ills.

We place our trust in you, the risen Lord, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

For those who care for the sick Father of mercies, we thank you for all who care for the sick.

When they diagnose, give them patience.

When they protect the vulnerable, give them your protec-tion.

When they work to heal, give them strength.

When they comfort, give them consolation.

When they are tired, give them rest.

When they are discouraged, bring them your hope.

May we welcome and respect them as we support one an-other in this time of trial.

For those seeking a cure for the virus ome, Holy Spirit, enlighten the minds of women and men of medical science who are working to find a solution to this viral infection. Guide their research and help them discover what you provide in creation, sure ways of control, protec-tion, inoculation and healing. Strengthen them in their tir-ing work and enrich in them the virtue of hope.

Prayers From Emeritus Bishop Peter Elliott

For those who govern and represent us Eternal Wisdom, guide our leaders called to serve us in our nation and its States. May they respond to the challenges of this affliction with prudence and sound judgement. With foresight, may their planning alleviate the economic bur-dens, compensate for losses, protect employment and en-sure ample food for the poor and isolated.

For humility Merciful Lord we stand before you in our human weakness.

We confess that we have been caught up in the pride and presumption that drives our worldly society. Free us from the arrogance that afflicts our age, for now we stand con-founded by conditions beyond our control or understand-ing.

Give us humble and honest hearts to discern the greater mystery of your providence in creation. May we accept your justice and trust your redeeming mercy.

Sub Tuum This short prayer to Our Lady has been prayed by Chris ans in troubled mes since the third century.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our hour of need, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin Mary. Amen

Our Lady of Good Health rayer from the shrine of Our Lady of Good Health, Church of la Maddalena and tomb of Saint Camillus, Rome.

Mother of Mercy, Our Lady of Good Health, in visiting St Elizabeth and in watching at the foot of the Cross of your suffering Son, you showed your solidarity with suffering humanity. Hear the prayer of all your infirm children who come to you with the certainty of finding a Mother who welcomes, heals and comforts them.

When you cannot come to Mass Take the missal or weekly bulle n and read the Scriptures provided in the Liturgy of the Word for the day. Reflect si-lently on the readings. You may also choose to offer inter-cession in the Prayer of the Faithful. Read the Rite of Com-munion and then use this prayer or some other appropriate words to welcome Jesus Christ spiritually.

An Act of Spiritual Communion At this time, we cannot receive you Lord Jesus sacramental-ly in the Eucharist. Help us to welcome you spiritually as we wait for the day when your saving Sacrifice will be offered and the divine Banquet will be spread in our churches once more.

You are the Lamb of God who take away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof. But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

My Jesus, come to me. I long for you; let me always be at one with you.

Come, Lord Jesus! Welcome, Eucharistic Lord. Welcome my Saviour and my God.

Lord I believe. Lord, I welcome, Lord I receive. My Lord! I thank you for the grace I receive in these moments. Silent prayer of gra tude.

Daily prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours is recommended, with reflec ve medita on on the Sta ons of the Cross and the Mysteries of the Rosary. When the Holy Week ceremo-nies are restricted, read the appropriate texts of these rites in your missal on each sacred day.

For the faithful departed

Be merciful, Lord Jesus, to all who have entered eternity because of this virus. Comfort and strengthen their families and friends and strengthen with the hope of your glorious Resurrection.

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them. + May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen

Let nothing disturb you,

Let nothing frighten you.

All things are passing:

God alone is changeless.

Patience gains all things,

Who has God wants nothing.

God alone suffices.

Stay irm in faith and seek St Joseph’s intercession: Francis

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the daily lives and routines of millions of people have been turned upside down, Pope Francis said yesterday, but they must help each other stay firm in faith. Source: CNS

In a video message released on the feast of St Joseph, the Pope said the saint also knew

“uncertainty and disappointment” and worry about what the future would bring, but he still placed himself without reservation into God’s hands.

The Vatican released the text of the Pope’s message a few hours before the video was to be broadcast as part of a campaign, led by the Italian bishops’ conference, to have Catholics pray the Rosary together for an end to the pandemic, for the healing of the sick and for the wellbeing of families in their second week of lockdown.

“The Rosary is the prayer of the humble and of the saints who use its mysteries to contemplate with Mary the life of Jesus, the merciful face of the Father,” the Pope said in his message. “How we all need to be truly consoled, to feel surrounded by his loving presence!”

“With the Virgin Mother, we beg the Lord to free the world from every form of pandemic,” he prayed.

Pope Francis said he understood how the lockdown could be difficult for families whose worlds now are “restricted to the walls of our homes,” but he urged people to be kind and gentle and “be the first to demon-strate charity, understanding, patience, forgiveness.”

“This evening,” he said, “we pray together, entrusting ourselves to the intercession of St. Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family, guardian of our families. Even the carpenter from Nazareth knew uncertainty and disap-pointment, concern about the future, but he also knew how to walk in the dark of certain moments letting himself be guided, without reserva-tion, by God’s will.”

Pope Francis prayed that God would enlighten scientists seeking a cure for the pandemic and political leaders, so that, like St Joseph, they would safeguard the good of all those entrusted to their care.

He prayed that God would make the Church “a sign and instrument of your light and goodness.”
