There were 60 students present and over 20 parents, many of whom stayed for the whole day. The day began with an information session for students and parents followed by a school tour and a talk from Mrs Glasson and Mr Taprell to the parents about the school and the many programs the school offers. Parents and students attended lessons, enjoyed a BBQ lunch and had fun playing sport together. The informative day was a great success and I would like to thank Ms Geri Brown (Yr 7 Advisor – 2015) and Mrs Karen Hobbs (Community Liaison Officer) for the coordination of the day. DISTRICT SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last Thursday the 6th of March, Sophie Weekes, Aaliyah Wright, Ben Kirk and I went to Dubbo for the Western Combined High School Swimming Carnival. We all had many races to compete in. We started off the day with the 100m Butterfly, one of the hardest events, but one of Sophie’s favourites. Then came the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m breastroke, 200m freestyle and the 100m backstroke. I would like to congratulate all our swimmers who competed at the Carnival. Special congratulations to Aaliyah, Ben and myself for making it to the next level, CHS Swimming! Grace Weekes – Yr 7

OUTDOOR RECREATION COURSE –

TARASA BELL I have just returned from the first half of my Outdoor Recreation Course with TAFE. In order to get my Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, I must participate in a 9 day camp both this year and next. I have fulfilled the first half of this quota. I arrived at Lithgow TAFE at 1pm on the 20th February. We proceeded to travel to our camp site (for the next 3 days) at Lake Lyell. For the next 2 days, we participated in multiple rock climbs, both indoor and outdoor, all at different magnitudes of difficulty. On the third day, we continued onto canoeing where we paddled 5km upstream to our overnight campsite. This was a difficult task when you had no previous idea how to canoe! We had to practice deep water rescue in case the canoe capsized. The day after, we canoed back downstream to our previous campsite and stayed the night. We changed camp site again to Mount Wilson where we stayed for the rest of the duration of the camp. For the next two days, we completed two canyons both of which were of average difficulty. It was a great deal of fun. At the end of both days, all 11 students (and two teachers) agreed it was the best activity of the week so far. For the final day of activities, we abseiled. For our sore and injured bodies, this was a nice relaxing jump down a cliff, in comparison to the rock climbs we had been involved in earlier in our expedition. We all breezed through the events of the day. Finally, on the last day we packed up camp and packed everything away at Lithgow TAFE. I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested. It was a great experience but it was physically demanding, I wouldn’t think it was best for anyone below a reasonable level of fitness to attempt. This was probably one of my best experiences, I conquered some of my fears (heights) and achieved some amazing things. It wasn’t all fun and games though as when we were in our second canyon most of the group suffered from mild hyperthermia and we had to stop and warm up!! Thank you to the school and TAFE for giving me this great opportunity.

RENEE LIDGARD – SCIENCE &

AGRICULTURE TEACHER Starting in a new school is always a challenge, but I am settling in well and enjoying the experience here at Molong Central School. My name is Renee Lidgard and I am one of the new Agriculture and Science teachers. I am originally from Western Sydney and my interest in agriculture started from riding and working with performance horses, then moved into showing beef cattle, specialising in hoof and hook competitions. I am also trained in the Vocational Education and Training course of Primary Industries. In Agriculture, I am currently teaching the Year 10, 11 and 12 classes. Year 10 are an enthusiastic class that are currently studying dairy production. They are learning all about the dairy industry and are raising 2 poddy calves with an end goal of showing the calves at the Molong show in a steer class in September. Year 11 have almost completed their overview topic, which covers agricultural systems, agricultural history and the social aspects surrounding agriculture. Once this is completed, they will be moving on with Animal Production. Finally, Year 12 are currently working on Animal Production. To assist students understanding of Animal Production we attended Central West Beef Week 12/03/14 at “Waroona” to look at breeding and feeding programs in beef cattle. In Science, I am teaching Year 8 Blue and Year 10.2. Year 8 are an energetic class that are enjoying the topic Physical Separations. In practical lessons they are separating substances using the methods of sieving, filtration, evaporation, crystallisation, centrifuge and magnetic separation. Year 10 are an enthusiastic class that are completing the topic of Chemical Reactions. This topic includes becoming familiar with the periodic table, knowing chemical reactions, being familiar with acid reactions and carrying out a wide variety of experiments. I am looking forward to what the future will bring me at Molong Central School.

Hi everyone, Our Scholastic Book Fair has now come to an end for another year and I would like to thank you, the school community for your very enthusiastic support of the event. It was pleasing to see so many students bringing their vast number of coins in to buy a book which was chosen very carefully. Most re-orders have been placed and distributed to students. If your child has not received their book it should arrive no later than the end of the week. Your generosity has allowed the library to acquire many new titles which I think the students will enjoy borrowing over the coming months. I would also like to thank the following students and their families for donating books to our collection during the Fair: Charlie & Lacey Brown; Hannah & Isaac Leisk; Emily, Joshua & Gabby Dowler; & Joseph Parmeter. I have been extremely pleased to see the return of pink PRC notes, however, there are a few more students who need to bring them back to school. I have now registered students who are participating in the 2014 PRC and they will be included in Molong Central School’s tally for this year. Students in K-2 classes must return their notes ASAP. Due to the library being painted this week Primary classes will be conducted in their classrooms and therefore students will be unable to borrow. I will collect books returned by students. All going well, lessons will be back in the library in Week 9 and borrowing will resume as normal. Although it has been very busy in the library over the past week it will be wonderful to have a freshly painted area for our students to work and relax in. I hope students will share and enjoy their purchases from the book fair with family and friends. Have a great week, Mrs Hall
