K-6 News

Rebecca Smyth

Associate Principal K-6

Our thoughts and prayers are with those experiencing sadness and loss at this time, particularly so close to Mother’s Day. We hope that knowing the care and kindness of the community are here to support them, brings some comfort during this time of sadness. You may have noticed that our KP area has a wonderful new shade structure! Our congratulations and thanks go to our KP P&C for the amazing job they do with fundraising, and for their vision and enthusiasm for how they would like to see the KP area of our college evolve. Special thanks also to our KP staff who go above and beyond the call of duty in their support for fundraising initiatives. This new structure provides another shade area for students to play in, and offers an elevated stage area for some of the exciting events that are held in the KP area during the year. We'd like to acknowledge the College P&C for making additional funds available in the short term to complete this project. To all involved, thank you for what you do for the sake of the children and the college.

Our college is now accepting kindergarten enrolments for the 2018 school year. It is very important if you have a child starting kindy next year, that you take the time to complete an enrolment form and register your interest as soon as possible. The kindy program is non-compulsory but we strongly encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity to join us and extend the early learning journey you have begun with your child at home. We have a wonderful Kindergarten program and it can fill quickly. If you have a neighbour, relative or friend with a child of kindy age in 2018, please remind them it is time to enrol their child and encourage them to do so. The application for Kindergarten Enrolment form is available from reception, or our web page. Please call 98513400 if you need any assistance. Thanks for your support and we look forward to hopefully meeting your child through our Play Cafe program in Term 4 of this year. Our Literacy Legends are coming!! This is a volunteer program where interested parents, family and community members can provide literacy support to children with areas of particular need across our primary classes. It will involve volunteers giving a little of their time, in short bursts, for some literacy skills practice with identified children. The training session for our interested volunteers is this Thursday, May 18th at 2.15pm in the E2 classroom. Tasha Burnside, one of our Lead Teachers is organising the program and will be running the training session. We've had a wonderful response from parents and families at this stage, which has been great to see and much appreciated. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the program and how you might help, please contact myself or Tasha Burnside at the college. Congratulations to our students who have completed NAPLAN for 2017! We have been impressed with the positive attitudes that the children have demonstrated going in to the tests and their willingness to settle in and give everything their best shot. That is all we have asked of the students and I am sure it is all you ask of them at home as well; that they do the best they can do...and be the best they can be. NAPLAN provides us with a snapshot about how the students have performed on that day, but there is so much more to your child's education and development. While the information that comes from the NAPLAN testing is valuable, it is what your child does every day at school that makes the difference in their lives.

Albany Districts Anzac Commemorative Tour 2017

On Wednesday, 10 May, Emma, Edi, Miss Reynolds and Mr Fraser headed to Albany to meet the new group attending the Albany Districts Anzac Commemorative Tour in September. We initially met at the Albany Historical Society's collection at the Cooperative Building and learned some of the ways we could research our Anzacs for the 'Adopt an Anzac' assignment we need to complete. We spent some time going through the documents - it was a bit of a treasure hunt! - and it was exciting when we found something relevant to us!

After this, we went to the Forts, where we had lunch, and then went into the National Anzac Centre. It was a sobering experience and has started to prepare us for the enormity of our trip following in the footsteps of the brave soldiers, nurses and helpers who left Albany's shores in 1915.

Scarf Wrap - Vancouver Arts Centre

Mount Barker Community College contributed 11.5 metres to the long scarf that will be wrapped around the Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany at the Street Festival on Saturday, 6th May. The year 1 students contributed some weaving, done on straws, then stitched together, this is displayed in the first photo. Thanks to Mrs Graham and Mrs Wallinger for organising the year one classes. Staff, parents and students contributed to the whole scarf that can be seen in the other pictures. Thanks to all who got those needles and hooks working. Mrs Kaye Louwen

Bendigo Bank Netball Carnival

The Bendigo Bank Netball Carnival was held on Thursday the 4th of May in Albany and we had both a boys and girls team from Years 9 and 10 compete. It was a full day of games with the boy’s team coming away with 3 wins and one draw, just a few points off making the finals but they had a great day nonetheless. The girl’s team continued to get better as the day went on and finished by winning their last game. Big thanks to Mr Gribble for coaching the boy’s team and helping out throughout the entire day and a thank you to all the students involved in the day, including our two year 12 girls who umpired, it went very smoothly and the students were great representatives from MBCC.
