Ifyou’reintosports,you’veseenithappen.You’veprobablyevenexperiencedit:footballplayersshakinghandsafter80minutesofknockingeachotheraround.Evenboxerstouchingglovesatthebeginningofeachround,thenhuggingeachotherafterbeatingeachotherintoapulpfor12rounds.What’sgoingon?
It’sallpartofsportsmanship,agreattraditioninsportsandcompetitionthatmeansplayingcleanandhandlingbothvictoryanddefeatwithgrace,style,anddignity.However,thelessonslearnedfromsportsmanshiparenotjustconfinedtosport–theyareamicrocosmoflifeaswell.
What Is Sportsmanship?
Sportsmanshipisdefinedas:
• playingfair
• followingtherulesofthegame
• respectingthejudgmentofrefereesandofficials
• treatingopponentswithrespect
Somepeopledefinegoodsportsmanshipasthe“goldenrule”ofsports—inotherwords,treatingthepeopleyouplaywithandagainstasyou’dliketobetreatedyourself.
Youdemonstrategoodsportsmanshipwhenyoushowrespectforyourself,yourteammates,andyouropponents,forthecoachesonbothsidesandforthereferees,judgesandotherofficials.
Butsportsmanshipisn’tjustreservedforthepeopleonthefield.Fansandparentsalsoneedtobeawareofhowtheybehaveduringcompetition.Sportsmanshipisastyleandanattitudeanditcanhaveapositiveinfluenceoneveryonearoundyou.
Win or Lose, Sportsmanship Helps You Get Through
Inthelastfewyears,taunting,trash-talking,gloating,andcheapshotshavebecomealltoocommoninsports.You’veprobablyseenathleteswhotaketheirownsuccessestooseriously,too.Theycelebrateagoalwithaprolongedvictorydanceorconstantlybragabouttheirabilities.
Everyonefeelsgreatwhentheywin,butitcanbejustashardtobeagoodsportwhenyou’vewonagameaswhenyou’velostone.Goodsportsmanshiptakesmaturityandcourage—whenyouworkreallyhardatasport,it’snoteasytoadmityoumadeabadplayorthatsomeonehasmoreskillsthanyou.Incompetition—asinlife—youmaynotalwayswinbutyoucanlearnsomethingfromlosing,too.
Whenyoudolose—anditwillhappen—don’ttakeitoutonyouropponent,blametheofficials,orblameyourteam.Takeitinyourstride.Whenyoulose,losewithclass.Beingproudofhowyouperformed,oratleastbeingawareofthingsyouneedtoimprovefornexttime,iskey.
Whenitcomestolosing,goodsportsmanshipmeanscongratulatingthewinnerspromptlyandwillingly.Also,itmeansacceptingthegame’soutcomewithoutcomplaintandwithoutexcuses,evenifyousometimesmightfeeltherefereesmadeafewquestionablecalls.

Practicing Good Sportsmanship
Sowhatdoesittaketodemonstrategoodsportsmanshipinreal-lifesituations?Herearesomeexamplesofthingsyoucando:
• Learnasmuchasyoucanaboutyoursport.Playbyitsrules.Showupforpractice,workhard,andrealisethatonateam,everyonedeservesachancetoplay.
• Talkpolitelyandactcourteouslytowardeveryonebefore,during,andaftergamesandevents.Thatincludesyourteammates,youropponents,yourcoachesandtheircoaches,theofficialspresidingoverthegame,andevenspectators(whocansometimesbeloudabouttheiropinions).
• Staycool.Evenifothersarelosingtheirtempers,itdoesn’tmeanyouhaveto.Remindyourselfthatnomatterhowhardyou’vepractisedandplayed,itis,afterall,justagame.
• Userestraint.Ifyou’reinadifficultsituationorsomeone’sthreateningyou,seekhelpimmediatelyfromyourcoachorfromanofficial.Remember,too,thatifyourespondwithviolenceyoucouldgetpenalised,whichcouldhurtyourchancesofwinning.
• Cheeryourteammatesonwithpositivestatements—andavoidtrash-talkingtheotherteam.
• Acknowledgeandapplaudgoodplays,evenwhensomeoneontheotherteammakesthem.
• Whenofficialsmakeacall,acceptitgracefullyevenifitgoesagainstyou.Rememberthatrefereesmaynotberighteverytime—butthey’repeoplewhoaredoingtheirbest,justasyouare.

Thistimeofyearisalwaysoneofmixedemotions.Yr12areburstingattheseamstogetonwiththenextchapteroftheirlife,aftertheyfinishtheimposingHSC,andyettheyhavefeelingsoftrepidation.Fromaprofessionalperspective,wefeelthatwehavedoneourjobwellwhenthegirlsareconfidentthatanexcitingworldawaitsthemandnomatterwhat,theycanfacethechallengeswithverve.Ultimatelythough,weareallalittlesad.Wewillmissthisgroupofveryspecialgirls.
Intermsoftheboardinghouses,theschoolhasbeenledbythedependableboardingprefects,NicolaArmstrongandClaudiaTurnbull.Theyhaverepresentedtheboarderswell.All16Yr12boardershavecertainlyinitiatedmeonmymaidenvoyageastheHeadofBoarding.Theyhavegentlycajoledandguidedmeforthelast9monthsandIhaveappreciatedallthewordsofwisdom.
Thebestpartofbeinganeducationalististhatwelearnfromeachother.Thebusinessworldmightcallit“360degreefeedback”,IcallitpositiverelationshipsandthegirlsatNEGSpersonifythis.EveryYr12student-dayandboarding-hasauniquepersonalitythathasbeenabletoflourishwiththeguidanceofthesupportiveenvironmentthatisNEGS.Theyarewellequippedtostrivetoachievetheirdreamsandgoals.Theschoolfeelsprivilegedtohavehadasmallpartinthisachievement.
IlovetoreadaboutpeopleandIenjoyedreadingabouttheinfamouscharacter,BearGrylls.Astoryofhis,whichresonateswithmeaboutthepresentYr12's,isastrongmessageaboutthefuture,andIwouldliketosignoffwithoneofBear'sstories:
Bearandhisfatherwereoutclimbingtogether.Bearwasyoung;hewasscared;hewascoldandhestartedtocry.HisDadturnedtohimandsaid: “Son,coverupbetterandpushthroughit.Weareonaproperexpeditionnowandthisisnotimetowhinge.Thediscomfortwillpass”.Anditdid,asitwillforyou.

Term3hasbeenaverylongtermandKirkwoodstudentsarecopingbutarequitetired.Isuspectthattheywillbespendingtimeintheholidaysjustsleeping.Itisalovelyfeelingtosaygoodbyetowinterandbeableembracespring.Ifonlywecouldgetsomedecentrain,allwouldbegood. Meal TimesMorningsThenewmealtimeshavebeenagreatsuccesswithourstudents.Someofthegirlshavetakentheopportunitytohaveextrasleepinthemorningsandcanactuallystayinbeduntil7.30am.Othersareupandcleaningtheirrooms,doingextrahomeworkorsimplysocialisingwitheachother.Thecoldwintermorningshavebeenmadebearablebynothavingtogotothediningroomuntil7.55am.ThishashadahugeimpactonthegirlsandIhavenoticedthatthetheyarelessstressedandmoreorganisedinthemorningsbecausetheyhavemoretimetogeteverythingdone.EveningsThelatereveningmealtimehasmeantthatgirlsdonothavetobewalkingbackandforthtothehouse.Insteadtheycansocialiseinthediningroomuntilitistimeforprep.ItismuchbetterforEquestrianstudentswhocannowmakeitontimetothediningroom.Pancake WednesdayThisisverypopularandlastweekImade122pancakes.Thereisalwaysenoughmixtureleftoverforstudentstohaveforafternoonteanextday.ItisanicetimeformetooasIfindittobemostenjoyablemakingthepancakesandhavingthegirlshoveringaroundchattingandlaughing. SportIthasbeenagoodtermforsportingsuccess,especiallyatIGSSA.Thehardslogoftrainingoncoldnightsmakesitallworthwhile.Itisnotaboutwinning,itisallaboutplayingthesportwiththeirteamandNEGSgirlscertainlydothiswell.Studentsarelookingforwardtothewarmermonthsandthesummersports.

Coast WeekendMrsEvanshasbeentryinghardtogeteventshappeningatweekends.InOctoberwehaveplannedadayofshoppingandswimmingatCoffsHarbour.Ihavesentthreememostostudentsaskingfornamesofthosewhowouldliketogo.Todateweonlyhave10namessoIaskthatyoutalktoyourdaughtertoseeifshewouldliketoattend.Wewillberunningthisdayevenifwehavetotakeasmallbus.

OnSaturdaythe14thofSeptember,NEGSAquaplayedDuvalWhiteintheGrandFinal.Onasurprisinglyhotdaythegirlsturnedupenthusiasticandreadytoplay.ThegirlsplayedatightgamethroughoutthefirsthalfholdingatoughDuvalWhiteoutforthemajorityofthe25minutes.Regroupingafterhalftime,NEGSAquareturnedtothefieldandcontinuedtomarkup,runhardandpasstotheirteammates.Unfortunatelywewentdown3-0attheend.However,thegirlsshouldbeproudoftheenormouseffortthattheyputintothegame,includingLucyHaynesourgoaliewhohadtofaceherfirstpenaltystrokewhichshedidbeautifully,pickingtherightsideandonlynarrowlymissingthesave.
AsateamwewouldliketothankLaraAskey,ourcoachforthetimeandeffortshehasputinthisyear,ourparentsandsupporterswhocheerloudlyonthesidelinenomatterwhattheweatherandoursubstituteplayersfromNEGSPurpleandStJohn’sUnder11’swhoturnedupandhelpeduswheneverweneededit.

NEGS Navy v Curly WurliesThegreatseasonofNEGSNavywasrewardedwithaplaceinthePreliminaryFinal.ThegirlsstartedoffslowlyandtheCurlyWurliesskippedtoanearlyleadatquartertime.However,thegamewasquiteevenlymatchedoverthenexttwoquartersasourgirlsfoundtheirform.Withadeficitof7goalsheadingintothefinalquarter,thegirlscameoutstronglyandmanagedtogainsomecrucialintercepts.ThemarginnarrowedandNavywerecominghomestrong.Itwasafabulousfightbackandthegirlscameclosebutunfortunatelyfellshortby3goals,goingdown30-27.Thegirlshavehadawonderfulseasonandshouldbereallyproudoftheireffortsacrossthecourseoftheyear.
NEGS White v VIP Blue JaysNEGSWhitehadagreatgameontheweekend.TheyplayedagainstVIPBlueJaysanditwasaspectacletowatch.Thegirlsweredownandcamebackjustafterhalftime.Theirlastquarterwasveryintenseasitwasextremelyclose.Forthelast5minutesitwasgoalforgoal.Unfortunately,whenthefinalbuzzerwentthegirlslostbytwopoints.Averybigcongratulationstothegirls.Theirskillshaveimprovedconsiderablysincethestartoftheseason.AsacoachIamveryproudofthem.Theyallsteppedupandhavebecomegreatlittleplayers.

NewEnglandGirls’Schoolorganisesmanyactivitiessuchasdebating,mocktrial,orchestra,choir,duringthecourseofayear.Studentsparticipatingintheseactivitiestakepartinpracticeandincompetitions.
TheAssociationofHeadsofIndependentGirls’SchoolsNSW(AHIGS)administersandconvenesinter-schoolactivities(suchasArchdaleDebatingandFestivalofSpeech)inwhichmanystudents,includingstudentsofthisschool,participate.
WhileNewEnglandGirls’SchoolandAHIGStakemeasurestomaketheactivitiesassafeasreasonablypossibleforparticipants,thereisariskthatstudentscanbeinjuredandsufferloss(includingfinancialloss)anddamageasaresultoftheirparticipationintheseactivities,whetheratpracticeorinactualevents.
Such injury can occur while the student is engaging inor watching a non-sporting activity, or travelling to andfrom the event. The injury may result from a student'sactions,theactionsofothers,thestateofthepremisesorequipmentfailure(e.g.acollapsedstageduringadebatingcompetition).
Onsomeoccasions,an injurycanbeserious(suchastornligaments,dislocations,backinjuries,concussionorbrokenbones).Inveryrarecasesaninjurycanbelifethreateningorresultinpermanentdisability.
Studentscouldalsosufferlossasaresultoftheirpersonalpropertybeinglost,stolen,damagedordestroyed.

AttheAustralianStockHorseNationalShowheldinMay,Mollywashighestplacedunder21riderintheAustralianStockHorseLadyRiderandwasfirstplaceintheNoviceHackwhichmadehereligibletoworkoutforChampion(ShewonChampionNoviceHackin2012).

September Rally Day
On Sunday 15 September, NEGS PC held an Open Rally Day. All attending riders enjoyed themselves on the Parents’ Oval on what was a very warm Spring day.
Instructors Sarah, Jackie, Shane and Sharyn took the riders for flatwork, sporting and jumping in preparation for the upcoming Zone 13 Gymkhana season.

NEGS PC Hunter Trial
On Sunday 3 November NEGS PC will be holding a Hunter Trial (Show Jumping and Cross Country). David Simon has kindly offered to be our Show Jump course builder and judge for the day. We will have ribbons to fifth place and Champion ribbons in all grades. Details will be available early Term 4 for this event.
