President’s Corner

Welcome to all members for 2020.

I hope you enjoyed the festive season and like me you are looking forward to coming Club events.

The new Club promotions that we mentioned in the December newsletter will kick off on Tuesday 11 February. Keep an eye on the Club notice board, Facebook and Website for more information.

There are exciting times ahead with our redevelopment and you will have noticed the great progress that is being made. I hope you can put up with the alteration and noise in the Mini Bar, it will be worth it in the long run.

We have plenty of sport ahead of us. The Indian Cricket team tour is well underway, and they are in the country until March. Super Rugby kicks off on Friday 31 January and Razor’s Crusaders team kicks off their tournament on Saturday 1 February against the Waratahs at Trafalgar Park in Nelson. GO THE CRUSADERS!

On the entertainment front we have a couple of shows with tickets on sale now. The Totally 80s show (Tickets $20) on Saturday 29 February and the very popular Retro Rockn will be back on Saturday 7 March. We are working on bringing other shows to the Club during the year so keep an eye out for details.

As always there will be free entertainment on in the Sports Hall when the room is available.

Until next issue, enjoy the rest of the summer and the fine weather that has finally arrived.

Cheers

Another Great Picnic!

The annual Club Picnic was held on Sunday 19 January at Yaldhurst Primary School and a great

day was had by everyone.

The weather was perfect, and we had a great turnout of members and families enjoying the free

activities and competing in the races. As usual the candy floss and ice creams were popular for young and old.

The mini jeeps line was at capacity most of the day and the Bouncy Castle provided fun for the younger ones.

Running races were held for each age group and first of the block were the babies. Thanks to Toyworld Hornby for selecting our prizes for the main kids races and for the general prize where all participants got a small goodies prize as well. The kid’s races finished off with the ever popular, “Pick up Shoe”, Sack and Piggyback races with winners receiving Warehouse vouchers.

Then it was down to business with the Hornby Club Champs Race for Ladies and men. Congratulations to Sharyn Jones who was winner of the Ladies race with Lisa Ferguson placed second and Carina McNaught coming in third.

The Men’s Champs Cup, first presented back in 1961, was won by Jason McKey with Cory McNaught placed second and Watson Ou third. Huge congratulations to all those that competed in the Adults races including the 3 legged-race. The last race of the day was the fun ‘Egg Toss’. This is always great to watch with eggs splattering all over people and around the course. For the second year in a row, Jason and Jamie kept their eggs whole to take out the title – congratulations.

After the races, the swimming pool was the place to be with lots of parents and kids enjoying a splash around. Thanks to the Surf Life Guards on patrol to keep everyone safe.

Another Great Picnic!

Counting the Lollies in the Jar was popular, and Isabel Garbett picked the winning number of 104 to win the lollies and voucher. Second place was split between Lacey McNaught and Courtney Morris both on 103.

Finally, I would like to thank my team of helpers, not just on the day, but prior to the day. The team helps to make this a special day for our members and families to enjoy. A big shout out to Allan Robertson, Principal of Yaldhurst Primary School, for giving his time and allowing us to use their facilities and especially the Swimming Pool.

Thank you to the members that came along. See you next year!

Regards

Lorraine Cole (Picnic Convenor)

The jeep rides were a hit!

Winter darts will start in March and any players that want to be in a team should contact Noeline or any committee member asap to secure a spot.

GOLF

The year 2020 has arrived and the Golf Committee wish all golfers and readers of this Magazine a Belated Happy New Year.

At the end of 2019, the section held their Xmas tournament at McLean’s Island Golf Course. The course was presented in excellent order. Irish Stableford was the game and the winners were Roger Farmer and Pam and Wayne Brewer. As it was a four person game a substitute was required in the team and Vern McAllister was drawn out to meet requirements. This was a popular winner, particularly with Roger. There were prizes for everyone and an excellent and large lunch following the game.

The section is conducting the Brown Bros on the 26 January and results will be featured in the next issue.

The sections AGM is on 11 Feb at 7.00 pm. The AGM will be held in the Darts room.

Have a good month.

SNOOKER

It’s a bit late but a Happy New Year to you all.

You will have noticed that the snooker room is no more. I want to take this opportunity to thank all those members who have used the room over the years and who I am sure enjoyed their time on our well-presented tables over the years. Many thanks to the table groomer Graham Walker.

The good news is we will be back in about eighteen months when Club renovations are complete with five tables and top class facilities. In the meantime, the Thursday night raffles will continue while and Andy Warren and Bob will be after your dosh!

While it is sad to go, the club must keep up with the times.

Anyone who wishes to enquire about our new place give Geoff a buzz on 021 0293 5971 or Brent on 021 437 388 if no answer, please leave a message.

Cheers

POOL

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a lovely break over the holiday period, and you are itching to get back onto the tables.

We are starting to get the teams together for the new Inter-Club season. Most of you will be aware that we are losing our pool area due to the club renovations. For the 2020 season the Cashmere Club have kindly opened their doors and tables to Hornby pool players so we will be playing all home games there this season. This arrangement will carry on until the Hornby Working Club renovations are complete and we thank Cashmere for their hospitality.

If you played inter club in one of the teams last year, and you want to play again this season, then please get in touch with your Captains to let them know you are interested in playing in that team again.

If you have never played before and would like too, then please contact the Pool Sections President, Paul Morris (the front office will give you his details if you need them) to express your interest.

Canterbury 8 Ball are holding their AGM at the end of January so I will report on this next month as this newsletter will have gone to print before results are known.

Finally, please keep an eye out on the Hornby Pool Section Facebook page for any updates on the section, news, upcoming tournaments and results.

I look forward to seeing you all on the tables

Regards

CARDS

Welcome to another great year ahead for Card Section members.

We have all had a restful break, and we are ready to get back into our section activities. The Card section finished off 2019 with two functions.

The Hamper Night - a normal card night where the prizes paid out for the top 17 people are all Xmas Themed, with hams and hampers. There were also lots of prizes in the raffle and Lucky Table numbers. Our 61 members who joined in also enjoyed a nice supper to finish off the evening.

Our last function for 2019 was the Breakup Dinner. Sixty nine members attended the Xmas Buffet meal upstairs. The meal was great and a huge thanks to Tracey and her team for an awesome meal. During the evening we held presentations of our special trophies. Congratulations to Anne Hepburn and Bev Bulmer who won the Winter Tournament Shield and the surprise of the Toilet Seat Sitter, going to Janne Mayo, much to her dismay!

This year’s activities start on Thursday 6 February at 6.00pm. This will be a fun night of Bingo with prizes and a few games of Euchre to finish off and finger food will be served at 6.30pm. We invite any new members interested in joining our section to come along and share our 1st fun night with fellow section members. The cost of attending will be $10.00 per person payable on the night.

Page 13: NEWSLETTER - hornbywmc.co.nz · NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020. President’s Corner Welcome to all members for 2020. I hope you enjoyed the festive season and like me you are looking forward

Our first normal euchre night will be on Thursday 13 Feb. As usual we start at 7.30pm, upstairs playing twelve games of progressive euchre (no partner required). The cost to play is $3.00 and there will be raffles to buy. If you are not confident in playing, we have committee members who will be happy to spend time showing you the basics of the game, in a short session.

Looking forward to seeing you all again in February.

OUTDOOR BOWLS

To start, here are the results of the Crow Trophy.

• First: Trevor Williams (Skip) Graeme Swale (Second) Graham Payne (Lead).

• Runners up: John Bowley (Skip) Syd Payne (Second) Christine Payne (Lead).

This was an enjoyable day’s bowls on a very hot day and the after match refreshments went down a treat

After recently celebrating his 90th birthday Les Wilson has decided to play his last end for the Outdoor Bowling Section Committee. His playing days are far from over though as he is still playing at Bowls Hornby and the Section. Les has been a major driving force in the Section’s development and transformation and he is a past Committee President. Bowls is not over for Les, he will still be able to show a few of his old tricks.

On behalf of all the Committee - Good Bowling.

TRAVEL

Happy New Year to all. It’s hard to believe Christmas celebrations are now complete for another year.

The Travel section Christmas party was very successful. Thanks to all those who contributed to make this such a great event. We had over 90 people attend the party, and all seemed to enjoy themselves.

On 7 December, 39 members departed Hornby Club to have a fun weekend in Timaru on the Saturday, followed by the races at Methven on Sunday. Timaru eh - yeah right! While endeavouring to enjoy lunch and a Pimm’s at Lake Hood the word came through that the Rangitata bridge had been closed due to flooding. So where to now? After a lot of soul searching and help from Trish and Kevin Cole, we managed to obtain accommodation at the Methven Resort for the night. We spent two or three hours at the Ashburton club, then travelled to Methven. We ended up with a great weekend despite the interruptions. Thanks to Chrissy Sheahan and Colleen Crawford for cooking us breakfast at the Methven racecourse.

FUTURE EVENTS

On Saturday 8 February, we have a group of 40 plus members attending the Hurunui race and gala day. We have a marque organised so weather shouldn’t be an issue. We are able to take our own lunch and a limited amount of our own alcohol, but both are available for purchase there if you prefer. You should bring your own chairs and if you have picnic tables, they would also be great to bring along.

We attended this gala day two years ago and people have been asking about it again, so we are hoping for another great day.

On Sunday 22 March, a trip has been planned on the River Queen Kaiapoi. Travel section will subsidise this by paying for the tug hire. The cost for members will be $40.00 to cover the coach and a lunch of meat, roast potatoes and salads. The cruise will depart at 11.00 am and will be for three hours. The coach will depart Hornby Club at 9.45am. The notice for this event will be on the Travel section board very soon.

A five day trip has been organised to visit the Marlborough and Nelson areas. This will depart Hornby club on Thursday 23 April returning Monday 27 April (public holiday). The cost of this trip is $695 and will cover four nights bed and breakfast, lunch at Kaikoura on the way to Blenheim, a day trip on the Pelorus mail boat including lunch, a visit to the wearable arts and classic cars museum and dinner on the first night in Nelson. We will stop at Hanmer Springs on the way home with two or three hours free time in the village. There will also be free time available in both Blenheim and Nelson. This notice is now on the board and a deposit of $95.00 is required when putting your name on the list.

Our next meeting will be Monday 17 February at 7.00pm

Warm regards

Lyn Wright
