We Need to Get out More: In a great example of our Round Square ethos of Adventure the Early Years department have been fostering a love for the great outdoors this week. Bats, kites and campfires are just some of the things that will provide lasting memories of our Get Outdoors week. Thanks to Mrs Athanasiou and the Early Years Team for making this happen in all weathers when keeping them in the classroom would have been the much easier option.

Out of Africa: Speaking of Round Square, well done to Robert Burke, Ashleigh Riddell, Sophie Shiel, and Phoebe Wright who are just back from representing the school at the Round Square International Conference in Cape Town. In the end, 180 schools from 50 countries made it to South Africa and were met and chaperoned by local schools. The Rockport delegation was fortunate indeed to be hosted by St George’s Grammar School, Cape Town and we are indebted to the Headmaster Julian Cameron (and to all his staff and pupils) for the amazing welcome and splendid hospitality throughout the visit. From Global to Local: The next big challenge facing Robert, Ashleigh, Sophie and Phoebe is, of course, how best to communicate their experience to the rest of the school, so that those important messages received and lessons learned in South Africa can be shared with all of our pupils. To that end, they are now working hard on presentations and slideshows to disseminate and pass on as effectively as possible what was for them a truly transformational experience. And not just for a transfer of information: what kind of local activities and initiatives can flow from our participation in the global conference? Watch this space. Anti-Social Media: Thanks to all those parents and members of staff who attended the very informative, if slightly concerning, Social Media Awareness Evening conducted by the PSNI last Wednesday in Holywood Primary School. There will be much more on this coming your way in the near future as we continue to look at both educational and technological solutions to better manage, control and restrict where necessary, the use of mobile devices in the senior school. Open Morning: Thank you in advance for supporting our first open day of the year to be held tomorrow morning. All pupils need to be here, well turned out, from 1015 and will be required to stay in school until shortly after 1200 noon. Their teachers will have by now instructed them as to which uniform or kit to wear depending on the activity they will be involved in. Finally, as word of mouth is still our number one recruiting tool, please do bring along any friends, family and colleagues who might want to see the school in action. George Vance Headmaster

GENERAL

Congratulations to Robert Burke, Sophie Shiel, Ashleigh Riddell and Phoebe Wright for being exceptional ambassadors for Rockport at RSIC2017 in Cape Town. We look forward to hearing all about the global conference in their forthcoming assembly. The European Regional Conference will be hosted by Felstead School in January 2018 and we are permitted to bring 2 pupils aged 14 or 15 years as a Rockport Student Delegation. The cost of attendance will be £250 plus flights and transfers. Any pupils aged 14 or 15 years who are interested in attending should see Mrs Toland for more details.

The Round Square International Conference 2018 will be in Canada. As soon as details become available this will be advertised in school and via the newsletter.

Dawn Toland Round Square Representative

Rockport Ladies Christmas Lunch Date for your diary - Friday 8th December 2017 Thank you so much for the already fervent enquiries for this annual event. The tickets shall be sold via the school website in a few weeks time - I shall of course let everyone know when this goes live nearer the time. As we have moved venues this year and the room capacity is smaller, I know that no one would wish to lose out on attending. However, there is one way to make sure that your place is already confirmed as table sponsorships are available. Quite a few are being confirmed imminently - tables sponsored shall not only benefit from prior confirmation and the knowledge that they are contributing to a fantastic charity but also a host of other extras on the day. Again I shall mention that there are other sponsorship packages still available to our generous parents and school supporters. For further details please contact: [email protected] Sinead Dall

Corries Competition Congratulations to Quinn Toland who has been selected to represent Rockport in Corrie’s sausage making competition. He will make his gluten-free Spanish Spicy Sausage recipe at the store on Thursday with participants from other local primary schools and the pupil who thought up the recipe for the sausage that sells the most over the weekend will go through to the finals at the La Mon Hotel. Good Luck Quinn!

Helen McConaghy, HE Teacher

Hallowe’en – Thursday 26th October Playgroup-R5 Pumpkin display – Please carve out or create a pumpkin masterpiece (there’s no pressure to be competitive unless you really want to be and then it’s GAME ON!) to display at the front of the Jackson Building. If you have never carved a pumpkin don’t be afraid of it, it really isn’t that hard and certainly a lot easier than scooping out a turnip like our parents had to in the 80s! There are lots of ideas online and using a thin serrated knife to cut out a face or design is quite easy. If your little one would prefer to decorate their pumpkin with glue, glitter and sequins this can be a lot of fun too. Please bring your pumpkins in during the last week before half term and give them to your class teacher. I can’t wait to see them! Trick or Treating – this year we are trick or treating! Dress up in your favourite costume and come trick or treating around the school. I know that some teachers have some yummy treats for us! Please note that a cost of £3 per child PG-R7 will be added to their bill to cover cost of treats. R6+ We are in the planning stages of putting together “Spooky Alley”. I don’t want to give too much away but we are hoping to re-create a haunted house type of activity for the older children to walk through. We have had lots of ideas and just need to gather together props. So if anyone has a large stuffed grizzly bear, smoke machine, sound machine, chainsaw, okay I’m joking…but am I? Mwhahahahahaha!!! I’ll be waiting outside afterwards with hot chocolate to calm anyone’s nerves Hallowe’en Hamper PTA mum Alison McAtamney has kindly donated a Fortnum & Mason Hallowe’en hamper to raffle. The hamper will be on display in the foyer of the Jackson Building from Monday 16th October. The price per ticket is £1. If you wish to be entered into the draw, please leave a sealed envelope with payment for as many tickets as you would like with your child’s form teacher. Please mark clearly your and your child’s name on the envelope. Feel free to enter as many times as you wish.
