Dear Parents,

This week was National Child Protection Week. While the focus for the week was on whole-community engagement to ensure we protect all children and young people in our care, Child Protection is something that extends far beyond a weekly feature for our school community.

As the staff of St Brigid’s College in 2018 and beyond, we remain fully committed to ensuring that children and young people are safe in our school now and into the future. St Brigid’s College has implemented extensive, well-articulated and comprehensive Child Protection standards for all staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors who interact with the young people in our care. All staff, visitors and volunteers are bound by certain standards of behaviour, practices and policies to safeguard children. The standards are clear and deliberately address areas of possible risk to children such as social media, potentially ‘grooming’ behaviours and transparency for all in positions of power over children.

For more details please see our Child Protection policies and procedures on the College website www.stbc.vic.edu.au. under the headings: “Our School” / “Child Safe”. The appointed College Child Protection Officer is Mrs Antonia Jeffery. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact either Antonia or myself for support.

ACTIVE SCHOOLS AWARD

Our College is a finalist in the Active Schools Award sponsored by Keep Victoria Beautiful which is one of Australia’s oldest environmental groups, with a rich history in community reward and recognition. This award recognises Victorian schools for outstanding sustainability achievement, sustainable practices, reducing their environmental impact and leading the community by example. We now await the final judge’s decision.

NAPLAN RESULTS

Our Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN results in English and Mathematics have been mailed out to parents this week. Parents received an individual report for their child in 5 areas: reading, punctuation and grammar, writing, spelling and numeracy. A pamphlet containing student report information is available from the Front Office. I remind parents that this document must be stored safely as the school is unable to produce duplicates at a later date.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION TRIP

We wish our Year 11 students attending their Outdoor Environmental Studies Unit 4 Excursion to Phillip Island next week, safe travel and wonderful experiences. Hopefully the weather will continue to do the noble thing and produce fine weather for the many activities to be undertaken. Many thanks to Alice Langley, for her expert organisation of the trip, and to Hayden McDonald for his assistance with supervision.

STAFF NEWS

We wish Gareth Hose well during his period of personal leave. Gareth will return at the start of Term 4.

Hear from the inspirational 2018 Australian and New Zealand L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellows who are changing people’s lives in ground-breaking fields. These five exciting women are in the early stages of their scientific careers and are chosen for their outstanding achievements in their chosen fields. Past fellows have included biologists, chemists, botanists, zoologists, clinicians, astronomers and physicists. Our school has the opportunity to apply to participate in this free event – best suited for female year 9, 10 and 11 students. This event connects young females with a passion for science and provides them with the opportunity to hear about the Fellow’s scientific interests and the discoveries they have made, whilst also discussing the potential for future study or careers in science.

If you are interested in applying to participate in the Girls in Science Forum, please contact Mrs Dooling ([email protected]) NO LATER than Monday 10th September.

The next College Trip to Japan is scheduled for September 2019, and MUST BE COMMITTED TO in the next three or four weeks. Students from Yrs 9 - 12 are eligible.

The World Rugby Cup is happening in Japan at the same time, and flights and accommodation in that period are already so tight that we have tentatively booked for a group of twenty, so as to be sure to be able to run the trip at all. Other periods have been considered, but for a variety of reasons, including making possible a two- or three-day visit to our sister school of Matsudo Kokusai, leaving Horsham towards the end of Term 3 is the only really possible time.

The itinerary will be similar to that used on our last trip - three days in Tokyo which will include a full day in Disneyland, two or three days in Nikko which will include a full day at the Samurai/Ninja Theme Park (Edo-Mura), two or three days with host families at our sister school which will include a day of school life and one and a half or two weekend days with our host families, 4 or 5 days in the Hiroshima area which will include a half-day visit to the Hiroshima Peace Park, and lots of free souvenir shopping and exploring time on the stunning island of Miyajima, and a visit to the beautiful 400-year-old Himeji Castle on our way back to Osaka for the last three or four days. In those last days, we

will travel at least twice to the wonderful city of Kyoto, and spend a crazy day at Universal Studios Theme Park. We will visit famous temples, castles, and shopping precincts in almost all locations we stay in, and climb the sacred mountain of Konpira on the island of Shikoku. As students become more familiar with the language and culture, there will be more and more opportunities for small-group free explorations.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE STUDYING JAPANESE TO GO ON THIS SCHOOL TRIP!!!

EVERYTHING - all meals, domestic and air travel, accommodation, entrance fees, airport taxes, etc - IS COVERED IN THE ESTIMATED COST OF THE TRIP. Long distance travel will almost all be done on the Bullet Train (Shinkansen), and accommodation will be twin- and multi-share in good quality hotels. The cost of obtaining a passport is not included in this price, but a group travel insurance package is.

The estimated cost is necessarily at this stage provisional, and may fluctuate if the value of the Australian dollar against the yen changes significantly over the next thirteen months, or if the cost of airfares increases significantly. Working on the current value of the yen to the dollar, and the current cost of airfares to Japan, we need to be looking at $5,800 - $6,000 per participant.

Because of the extreme pressure on accommodation and flights, the College must make a firm booking within the next five weeks, and so a non-refundable deposit of $300 will be required to be paid by all participants by the end of Term 3 (Sept 21) this year. A meeting will be held in the College Library on Wednesday 12th September at 7:30 p.m. and is open to all interested parties. Please try to be there, or, if unable to, contact Jeni Allen to express a firm level of interest and acquire further information.

I look forward to seeing you there! Jeni Allen

ACTIVE GIRLS BRUNCH | Last week our Year 7 girls had the pleasure of attending Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly's Active Girls Brunch with many other young female students from across Wimmera schools.

The morning involved getting active with some exercise, a big dose of inspiration from AFLW Western Bulldogs player, Katie Brennan, as well as other local sporting role models as they spoke on stage about their journeys and experiences.

The girls really enjoyed the morning's presentation and as well as the delicious brunch. They would like to sincerely thank all the organisers of the day.
