NEWSLETTER NO. 5 GINGIN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 10th April 2019 www.gingin.wa.edu.au
EASTER ACTIVITIES
he Student Councillors have been very busy
running plenty of Easter activities throughout
these last few weeks of term! They have been
helping the Primary students complete their
colouring in competition entries at lunchtime (which
are due this Thursday 11th April). They have also been
selling raffle tickets before school and at lunch for the
amazing Easter Raffle prizes (which are now on
display in the Front Office). They have also been
selling ‘guesses’ for how many eggs there are in the
jar and all winners will be announced at the end of
this week!
The Student Councillors, with help from the Easter
Bunny, also visited the Kindy and Pre-primary classes
this week to treat them to Easter Egg hunts! They
enjoyed helping their buddies hunt for eggs and
everyone left with a smile on their face – including
the Easter Bunny!
The Student Councillors want to wish everyone a happy holiday and thank those who supported them by
donating Easter items and purchasing raffle tickets!
Thank you! From Student Councillors

Blogging with Year 8 and 9 English students. “Blogging” comes from the word “web log” and is a forum for people to express their views and thoughts online
about various issues or just their daily lives.
The Year 8 and 9 English students had the opportunity recently to take a 20th
century book and bring it to the 21st Century digital age. They studied the novel
“So Much to Tell You” by John Marsden which takes the form of a diary written
by a girl with a disfigured face and her struggles to come to terms with the
traumatic life events which caused her disfigurement. Using the private
blogging site” Twiducate”, students were able to take on the persona of one of
the books characters and write a blog about events that took place in the story.
Students were asked to write 4 to 6 blogs as that character. They were then
encouraged to select 4 class mates to comment on their blogs as characters
from the book and give positive feedback to that character. This activity
provided a great example to students as to how blogging can become part of
a diary for people who can write about almost anything and share their
thoughts on issues with others online.
Big Thank You to Breakfast Club Volunteers! The school would like to thank Mark Ovens and Tiffany Polette who have been spending a great deal of their
own time working to provide nourishing breakfasts for children as they get off the bus or get to school. Kelly
Radalj, Tenisha Kestel, Linda Balcombe and Raylene Maloney provided by the Bendigo Bank and Corey and
Natalie Weckert have also been volunteering each Tuesday for the Breakfast Club. Additionally, the Bendigo
Bank are donating a new toaster for the school! Thanks to Chloe Balcombe and Becky-Sue Dorloff for
volunteering on Wednesday’s. The Breakfast Club helps students by ensuring that all students go into class ready
to learn and positive about the day.
Bullying No Way! Bystander Behaviour. A few weeks ago our school took part in the Bullying No Way! promotional day. Our CRTR values reflect and
promote positive behaviours and we would like to encourage parents to reinforce the positive language and
behaviours at home. Bystanders can be helpful by ‘standing up’ to those who choose to use put downs, teasing
or bullying or they can be hurtful by
encouraging the negative behaviours to
occur. The following links provide parents
the same useful resources and catch
phrases that staff use to explicitly teach
empowering strategies against bullying.

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2019 The Woolworths Earn & Learn program is back again in Term 2! Through this program we
will be able to get new educational resources for our school and all we need you to do
is shop for your groceries at Woolworths!
From the 1st of May until the 25th June 2019, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that
go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the
purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can
then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker sheet. Once it is completed,
they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into your local
Woolworths collection box.
Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete,
the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school (located in the Front Office as of
Term 2). Sticker sheets will be available at the school if you need to stock up!
At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new resources and equipment! The range is
extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, STEM and some
fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our Library.

School Holiday Reading Holidays are a perfect time to relax with a good book
and recharge your batteries. Reading for no particular
reason is a pleasure and has endless benefits for our
brains. Children need to use their imagination to tell
stories. Reading texts by other authors models the high
quality language, which in turn, enhances good
writing. If you would like to nominate a book which
was an enjoyable read, go to the West Australian
Young Readers site – [email protected] to
complete a nomination form or get
recommendations for good reads. All details can be
found on this site.
The Gingin Community Resource Centre holds a story
time for young readers on Wednesday mornings from
9:30am. Gloria Hyne runs the story/rhyme time sessions
with colour-in activities to follow.
Grab a book and sit back and read for fun.

Corey Smith - Room 1 Eco-Warrior
Corey selflessly spends his playtime looking for rubbish to help keep our school
clean. He also spies rubbish when we walk through the school to different classes.
Corey is the epitome of our PBS CRTR, Zooma Care, following the rules to put rubbish
in the bin and care for our school environment. Congratulations, Corey, on your
outstanding efforts. We hope students throughout the school will follow your
excellent example.
Room 1 Fun! Room 1 students have had lots of fun in Mathematics this
term, making patterns, comparing the weight of things and
playing lots of games like the "Heavier Than, Lighter
Than" Game. Maths is so much fun! Also, this term, Helena
has been teaching us about Protective Behaviours. We
love it when she comes to read us stories and she lets us
use the puppets for role-play. We have been learning
about our feelings, using Emojis. We can now identify
the early warning signs we might have if we are scared of
something or in a situation with a strange person. Helena
gave us all a balloon to blow up and some of us were very
scared the balloon would pop whilst others thought it was
funny. We think Helena might be showing some early
warning signs that she is scared of balloons popping!
