St James [1864-65] St John’s [1872] St Mark’s [1882] St Luke’s [1881] St Mary’s [1895]
July Services The Vicar Writes Alastair shared a question that was put to the prison ministry team: What do people mean when they talk about the glory of God? We shared our ideas— God glimpsed in the beauty and majesty of creation, in worship, God in a newborn baby, in a flower or a seed, God in the passion of Jesus, mystery. The question stayed with me and I continued to ponder it. In a quiet moment today, I realised that I see the glory of God in amazing acts of kindness, hospitality and generosity, whenever there is a genuine outpouring of love, wherever people struggle for justice on behalf of others, wherever peace breaks out. I see the glory of God in communities which care for all their members and which come together to celebrate and mourn. I see it in this place. What about you? What does it mean to you and how does it touch your life? May God bless you richly, and
lead you to peace. Lynne Horwood

Around the Parish Irwell
Services held in the past month have been very well
attended despite cold weather. A shared luncheon was
held after Morning Worship at the end of May at the
Stephens home. It was lovely to have Margaret Talbot
come from Christchurch for this service on her birthday.
The Irwell Community Mid-Winter Dinner went off very
well. 52 attended including some newcomers. Everyone
who was there really enjoyed themselves and stayed late
enjoying tea and coffee together and chatting. Thanks to
the Southbridge crew of 4 who helped in the kitchen
Leeston There was an excellent response to the Popular Songs of
Faith and Hope service on the 28th May. A second Men’s
Breakfast was held in mid-June. The men were again well
fed by chef Paddy Dillon and entertained by guest speaker
Albie Anderson.
It was great to see an almost full church on 25 June at the
farewell service for Donald and Elizabeth Lill. The service
began with a trumpet voluntary played flawlessly by Angus
Elliot, and the choir sang during Communion. Donald had
chosen the hymns but there was a surprise for him as we
sang one of his favourites, “There is a Balm in Gilead” after
Communion.
During morning tea a presentation was made to the Lills of
a mosaic cross, an orchid and a sum for them to spend as
they choose. Mike Morley-Bunker read a poem he had
composed, a message from Noeline Gould was read, and
the children presented Elizabeth with a colourful posy. We
will miss the Lill’s very much but know we will see them
again as they have promised to return for the Fair.

Ashburton is going to be the new location
There’ll be a new door to visit
And there will be new conversations
Ashburton folk will find our couple warm and kind,
They are always ready to help out
They are always giving and never seem to mind.
Donald we are going to miss your carol lyrics
You are going to have show me
How I can become a rhyming mimic
Elizabeth I am going to miss your lovely diction
Your’s is a voice that soothes when soft
And firm when you want our attention
Now I have heard it said
that there is something better
than sliced bread.

Southbridge Southbridge is delighted to have 2 new ventures under-
way: the St James Kidz Club, led by Rev’d Lynne and
Averil Ewart-Jones, and the community lunch organised
by Gaye Lilley, Joyce Greenwood and Lorraine Summers.
Two of these lunches have now been held and very
much enjoyed. Worship continues to be well attended,
and the fellowship breakfast and tea are enjoyed by all.
There will be a winter working bee for the grounds on
Tuesday 11th July. The Hall roof is to be painted and
options regarding the oak tree which was damaged are
being investigated.
Planning for the Dinner on 4 August is well underway.
We extend a warm invitation to all throughout the par-
ish.
Sedgemere Looking forward to the Sedgemere Community
Dinner and to hosting the parish for worship at the
end of the month.
