Charter Party – 17 July 2008: This will bea spectacular black-tie event to take place in theInn’s gardens, including a special sit downdinner in a beautifully decorated marquee withlive music and dancing as well as entertainmentdotted around the garden. Plans are currentlybeing finalised for this party but it promises to be a truly memorable evening. Into the diary with the date and it’s not too early toplan your table!

Anniversary Book: This is the Christmaspresent. If you haven’t already subscribed totake advantage of the discounted price and alsohave your name inscribed, there is still time todo so. The Inner Temple: A Community ofCommunities has been written and composedand is on its way to the printers. Stylishlyproduced, it will offer an outlook of the life inthe Inn through a series of thought-provoking

and entertaining articles matched with manycolourful illustrations. Publication is due thisautumn and half a dozen (or more if you like)copies will solve all your Christmas presentheadaches! For more information on this or topre-order a copy, look for the insert in thisedition.

More to come later, but this is an horsd’oeuvre.

Incidentally, the King James Charter bearsthe date 13 August 1608. But I think that, withthe change to the corrected Julian calendar in1752 (“Give us back our eleven days”), the exact400th anniversary should be 24 August 2008 –deep in the vacation. A fortnight or so later, theRoyal Horticultural Society will be holdingone of its summer flower shows in our garden –did you know that the Chelsea Flower Showoriginated in Inner Temple garden around 1901?– and we hope that Mark Rylance will produceand perform in Shakespeare’s Othello in theTemple in August and September 2008.

There were resonances with contemporaryissues in Britain too. The Governor of Virginiahad tried, unsuccessfully, to pass a law banningsmoking in public places. As the home oftobacco, perhaps he should have known better. The sacking of six state prosecutors wascausing a stir. Were they incompetent or wasthere a tinge of political interference?University students were worried that studentloan companies were overcharging them. The largest, Sally Mae, with a debt book of $20 billion, was in particular trouble. Law isstudied at postgraduate level in the States andindividual student debts of $150,000 are notuncommon.

The final word, however, should go to theAmerican Inns of Court Foundation, which was established only 20 years ago topromote within their legal profession all that is best from the Inns here. They were the co-orgainsers of a two-day “Rule of Law”conference at Richmond University and withover 500 chapters, and their own Chief Justiceas a member, its influence is clearing being felt.So it was particularly fitting that a plaquecommemorating this association with theEnglish Inns of Court was unveiled atJamestown during our visit. It acknowledges amost special relationship that began 400 yearsago and has remained strong ever since.

REFLECTIONS ON JAMESTOWN

Representatives of the four Inns ofCourt were invited to Virginia,USA, in April 2007 to participatein a series of events marking the

400th anniversary of the founding of theJamestown settlement, the first permanentEuropean colony to be established there.Master Rix represented the Treasurer and wasaccompanied by the Sub-Treasurer, whoseobservations on this special occasion can beread below.

There are many places in Virginia that havenot changed much in 400 years, especially theforests and rivers that branch from theChesapeake Bay into the interior of this oncewild place. With the reconstruction of theoriginal settlement (abandoned within ahundred years for the elegance and greatersecurity of Williamsburg eight miles inland), itis indeed possible to feel that you areexperiencing the same sights and sounds as theoriginal colonists did. Spring brings a clear lightthat dapples through the trees like a myriad ofprisms, as enchanting now as it was then.

Another feature that has not changed in 400 years is the acknowledgment by just abouteveryone in America’s legal profession that themost important thing those early settlersbrought with them was the Rule of Law.Enshrined in the Virginia Charter itself and theearly rules for the colony’s governance, it wasreinforced by the commitment of manymembers of the English Inns of Court, andespecially those of Middle Temple, to see thecolonial experiment succeed. A number wentout to join the colony and by the time ofAmerican Independence and the drafting of itsConstitution, several of the Founding Fathershad been back to study law at the Inns ofCourt in London. These were the linksbetween our two great jurisdictions which havegrown, flourished and cross-fertilised eachother ever since.

To mark this legal friendship, the events, lectures and celebrations were led by our ownLord Chief Justice and the Chief Justice of theUnited States, John G. Roberts Jnr.

EDUCATION & TRAININGDEPARTMENT

On Sunday 17 June, the E&T Department, inconjunction with the Junior Bar Association, will be holding a “Prospective Students’Question & Answer Day” for undergraduatesinterested in a career at the Bar. There will besessions on the CPE, funding and joining theInn, how to put together a legal CV (includingMini-Pupillage), BVC On-line & the BVC,

involvement with Inner Temple societies, life as a Pupil/junior Tenant, OLPAS, otheroptions besides tenancy and interview tips andmock interviews. If you would like tovolunteer to help with any of these sessions, please contact Beth Phillips on 020 7797 8209or by emailing [email protected]

The Dinner to the Universities was held this yearon 20 March 2007 and was attended by 140undergraduates (in law and other disciplines)from 24 Universities as well as 50 seniormembers of the Inn. Master Treasurer’sencouraging yet realistic speech on training forthe Bar was very well-received. The LegalAcademics’ Dinner was held on the 30 April andwas attended by 90 academics, mainly fromUniversities offering undergraduate degrees in

law but also from some BVC providers. MasterTreasurer took the opportunity to encourage theacademics to inform their best and brighteststudents about a career at the Bar but stressedagain the competitive nature of training for theBar. His comments were well-received and anenjoyable evening was had by all. The E&TDepartment would like to thank the members ofthe Inn who supported these two events.

DINNER TO THE UNIVERSITIES AND LEGAL ACADEMICS’ DINNER

QUESTION AND ANSWER DAY FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

In April, the E&T Department held the first ofits two annual Advocacy and Ethics weekendsfor New Practitioners at Latimer House inBuckinghamshire. The weekend was accreditedfor 17 CPD hours including 9 hours ofadvocacy training and 3 hours of ethics trainingand was attended by 54 junior barristers. Thecourse allowed NPs the opportunity to crossexamine real expert medical witnesses and totackle a series of hypothetical ethical problemswith the assistance of real solicitors. We wereprivileged enough to have Master Nice give theafter-dinner speech on the Saturday night.

Following thedinner, theadvocacy trainerswere left verydisappointed afterbeing thrashed bythe NPs in a gameof giant jenga. We will see if the trainers can regain the cup atthe next NP Weekend in June! Overall it was avery successful and well-received weekend andthe E&T Department would like to thank allthose who gave up their weekend to help.

training for established practitioners. The Innhas over the years relied upon on a verydedicated band of trainers whose enthusiasmfor their subject never seems to wane. Yet thecontinuing expansion of our trainingprogramme, partly due to Bar Standards Boardregulations and partly to our own commitmentto provide quality training for the profession, means we need more members to train asadvocacy trainers. Your commitment to thecause need not be entirely altruistic. Fewpractitioner trainers come away from a sessionwithout learning something about their ownadvocacy (or gaining a few CPD points!). Idoubt that any of us come away from atraining weekend feeling unfulfilled andwithout having enjoyed the company andenthusiasm of those who are to be themainstays of our profession in the future.

So, could you make a good advocacytrainer? If it helps to allay fears, there is not an(honest) advocacy trainer who will not be ableto fill a short evening recounting thedemonstrations he has given that went wrong. For the trainees it is immensely satisfying torealise that even in expert hands things maynot go according to plan, and teaches them justas much as the perfect demonstration.

Teaching advocacy is no different fromteaching anything else. It requires a knowledgeof the subject, an ability to get that knowledgeacross, a desire to impart that knowledge andan interest in the future of the profession. Ifthat attracts you, we would be delighted towelcome you and train you to train.

The Inner Temple is in its seconddecade of advocacy training – notmuch in terms of the five hundredor more years that this Inn has

been in existence – but in terms of advocacytraining in the United Kingdom, a respectableinnings. For years the Bar believed thatadvocacy was an inherent skill which could notbe taught. If you had been deprived of theadvocacy gene at birth, there was nothing thatcould be done to improve your lot. It took an Australian Professor of Advocacy, Professor The Hon George Hampel QC, to suggest otherwise.

Professor Hampel persuaded the four Innsthat advocacy was a skill which could betaught, just as you might teach a child to playthe violin or a potter to throw a pot. Hismethod of teaching was akin to watching amusical Master Class; the “performance” wasfollowed by analysis of what needed to beimproved, why it needed improving and how itcould be improved. There followed a virtuoso“performance” from the trainer of the new skillthat he had tried to impart before the studentwas asked to try it again. The Bar was hookedand, as with many things, once we had graspedthe concept, there was no stopping us.

Inner Temple is, we like to think, at theforefront of advocacy teaching. The course forpupils has been radically overhauled in recentyears, our course for new practitioners extendsto a really challenging session devoted to thehandling of expert witnesses, and we arebuilding a comprehensive programme of

COLOUR A CHILD’S LIFE

During May three members of the Inn’s seniormanagement team spent a day redecorating anentire flat on a social housing estate in SouthLondon. Nick Paladina, Yeshim Harris andFiona Fulton were working as volunteers onthe “Colour A Child’s Life” scheme for theLondon-based charity Kids Company.

Set up in 1996 by the charismatic CamilaBatmanghelidjh, the charity providestherapeutic support to some of the city’s mostvulnerable children. Operating throughschools across the capital as well as its drop-incentre in Camberwell, Kids Company offerscare targeted to each individual child. It alsomanages a network of volunteers who can givepractical help through programmes rangingfrom mentoring to running art workshops, organising day trips and refurbishing flats and

houses. Many of these volunteers are drawnfrom corporate supporters (such as Coutts,Barclays, Centrica and Virgin) who have beenattracted both by the charity’s work and by theopportunity the programmes offer for staffdevelopment and team-building.

It is hoped that members and staff couldbecome more involved with the charity on a regular basis, subject to the limitations of the Inn’s own charitable objects. Anyone interested in finding out more should either contact Nick [email protected] or visit the Kids Company websitewww.kidsco.org.uk
