Fellow Lions,
As the end of August approaches so does the final date for completing the equipment survey.
Please fill in the survey and return it to me by 31 August. If you don’t have any Lions equipment
please reply saying so - so that we can get a complete picture of who has what and who doesn’t.
The first of the mechanical mint machines is in place at Lion Danny’s office and another has been
prepared for use at the Belconnen Action Bus Depot under the care of Lion Peter Sillis.
Welcome to Toowoomba Lion Ben Wright who has attended the most recent Board and Dinner
meetings. Ben will transfer to the Gungahlin Club as he is now resident in Canberra.
Youth of the Year. We need someone to manage this year’s Youth of the Year program. At this
stage we have two possible contestants and it would be good to seek more to increase the
competitiveness. As will all the youth activities we support this as an excellent project with the
rewards coming to the contestants, to Lions and to the community. These rewards to Lions and the
community become evident as soon as the contestants gather and present their credentials. More
rewards follow as the contestants show their skills and confidence at the club meeting and then pass
from club to region competition – and perhaps even go further through District and State levels.
Yours in Lionism
Mick

Board approved the sale of Christmas cakes at Gold Creek on 6 December. Lion Mick has the lead on
this.
Christmas cake purchases this year to be limited to 60 boxes each of small and large cakes (70 of each
last year). Purchase to be made close to time of first sales. Lion Mick has the lead.
Board agreed to conduct a BBQ for Bec Henderson on 31 January 2015 at Kowen Forest. Lion Mark
will take the lead.
Youth of the Year Program materials have arrived. There is a need to identify a lead on this project.
Lion Peter Sillis has agreed to maintain the catering trailers as soon as the audit and signage is
completed.
Large decals have been ordered for the trailers and a smaller one for the new box made for the
Charter.
The Board approved the donation of $500 to the Lions club of Albany ‘Hope in a Boat’ project as it
aligns with our own focus on Diabetes Awareness. Funds to be transferred electronically.
So far we have two delegates for the district convention at Cabramatta on October 10-12.
$462.95 had been sent to the Canberra Hospital – the funds raised from the BBQ at the Cancer Centre.
Assistant Cub Leader from Ginninderra Sea Cubs to be invited to speak at the next dinner meeting.
The Board approved a donation of $1000 to be presented for their ‘Challenge of CUBage’ venture.
A letter from a Nichols resident seeking help with wheelchair repair would be followed up. Lion Mick

Rifle Range Dinner. Lion Garry once again led the team to provide the Rifle Club with a dinner on their
presentation night. Garry is a wizard at preparing the food with meats and vegetables all staged so as to be ready
exactly on time. Chris, Mark, Keith, visitor Andrew and I did as instructed, setting up, carving, serving, washing
up and putting away. There were a couple of minor hiccups – such as where was the ice cream which had been
seen a few minutes before. A panicky search ended when it was found in the microwave rather than the fridge!
A lot of setting up work goes into buying and preparing the food, loading the cooking facilities and then cleaning
up and repacking afterwards and we are fortunate in having Lion Garry who maintains a close contact with the
Rifle club, and spends so much time getting things ready prior to the event. Well done and thanks to Garry and
Pauline, and to the team of helpers.
Canberra Cancer Centre opening. Alas your editor failed to get photographs of the sausage sizzle held at
the open day of the Canberra Region Cancer Centre. We had six Lions attending, Mark leading, Glynis, Paul,
Moira, Tony and myself, and, strategically placed outside at the entrance, we got the onion and bangers cooking
quickly to lure the visitors. It was cool initially but warmed up as time went by. Visitors provided a steady
custom and even the staff came out to sample the culinary delights! Surprisingly, cakes sold well too. Our
Rotary friends had the drinks concession inside, however, though warmer, they couldn’t get the trade we enjoyed
outside. All in all it was a success as it raised some funds and showed the Lions flag. Those who went into the
new building for a tour were most impressed as it is a great improvement over the old facilities.

Lion Tony and I met up with the Albany
Lions on Saturday morning – their motor bikes are
huge and are fitted with all sorts of gadgets including
cameras, radio loudness control (goes up as the
engine revs and noise goes up!), and even a pocket
near the handlebars for Lions mints which have
proven ideal for keeping up the concentration. Lion
Tony took the opportunity to top them up!
The trailers, especially the boat, generated a
lot of interest – successfully raising awareness in
diabetes and gaining donations. They have a support
vehicle too. Some nights they have camped out –
usually at caravan parks or sites organised by Lions
in the town they stop in.
On Sunday I presented a club banner and
was provided with the certificate shown on the front
cover.
They are taking a detour to attend the ANZI
forum in Adelaide (30-31 Aug) which will be
attended by the present and immediate-past
international Presidents. They’ll then head back our
way to resume their track to Tasmania and will
eventually arrive home after 80 days away.
This is a large activity and it is hoped that
their message is acted upon because diabetes is
increasing in our population. Additionally, though not
the primary goal of their mission, it is hoped that they
raise quite a bit of money for Diabetes Research
Western Australia.

oduct_id=2936 Description Specification (KORvandaber)- We cannot over-emphasise the quality, health and flowering ability of this beautiful
shrub from Kordes. The fully double creamy white blooms open with a breath of apricot and are
produced in clusters of 3-5. There is a slight, pleasing fragrance and the glossy foliage is highly
resistant to blackspot and mildew. Decorated with Gold and Silver medals in international rose
competitions, this elegant variety will bring real pleasure to every garden. 1.2m tall.
By ed. I’m interested in getting a couple of these as they look quite stunning but the freight costs are
greater than the cost of the rose. However if others wanted these roses too the cost for freight would go
down such that if 20 are bought freight is free. Please let me know if you are interested. (Lloyd x2 +

A Christmas engagement at Gold Creek From the Gold Creek Traders:
‘We invite you to be a part of our market from 10am-5pm on Saturday 6th December in Gold
Creek. You are welcome to sell any of your products but we ask that you include Lions Christmas cakes.
There are no overhead costs to participate and all funds raised are yours to keep. However we do ask
that you provide your own table and gazebo if desired. If sourcing a table is impossible for you, please
let me know and we may be able to assist.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Cheers
Holly Herbig
Secretary to the Gold Creek Traders’
We have subsequently accepted the opportunity and though the event is on the same day as the big BBQ
for the ABS we will find the numbers necessary to do both.

And from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Hi Garry, I was wondering if the Lions Club were available this year Saturday 6th December 2014 to cook the
BBQ at our annual Family Christmas Carnival. Same times as usual, Carnival starts at 11 am and goes
to 3 pm. If you could let me know that would be great. Cheers Anthea Smith Census Communications and Knowledge Management |ABS 2017| Australian Bureau of Statistics
Of course we will accept!

Lions assisting youth.
Assistant Cub Leader Andrea Farrow wrote to the club seeking funding for transport for a cub venture
and at our dinner meeting on 21 August, Andrea and Cub Leader Tim Kirsopp spoke about their project
and about previous ventures.
Lake Ginninderra Cub Pack is a part of the Lake Ginninderra Sea Scout Group and is a thriving pack
with 35 Cub Scouts and 5 leaders. They run a yearly program which includes activities such as
camping, canoeing, scout craft and community service.
Every couple of years they organise a week-long camp for cubs, called a ‘Caravan of CUBage’. The
aim of the Caravan of CUBage is to take cubs to new and exciting places around Australia and involve
them in activities which would be outside of the normal cubs’ program.
In previous years they have gone to Melbourne and Sydney and been involved in activities such as
remembrance services at the Shrine of Remembrance and sailing 40ft yachts on Port Phillip Bay.
Through this program cubs also had the opportunity to attend the future-scout day at the 2010
Australian Scout Jamboree in Sydney.
In January 2015 a third Caravan of CUBage trip is planned, this time to Ballarat, staying at Pax Hill
Scout Camp. Activities will include a visit Sovereign Hill, ghost tours, Bendigo Dragon Museum,
archery, gold mining, astronomy and a flying fox. The program would include 2 days of driving (1 day
to get there and one to come back, these would include visits to tourist locations to break up the trip
such as the submarine at Holbrook and the Dragon Museum at Bendigo), 3 days of activities (2 days off
site and 1 day on site).

Lego How long would it take you to get all the colours and sides on a Rubik’s cube aligned starting from the first
picture?
Ages? Forever? Never succeed? What you need is this little electronic gadget made, in part, of Lego blocks.
Done in less than two minutes! And to rub salt into the wound there was a very young lad looking after the
exhibit! Seen at the Lego exhibition recently held in Canberra.
Two 12 seater buses are used as anyone with a license
can drive a 12 seater. This also reduces the risk of driver fatigue
and keeps the cubs in small, easily manageable groups. The cost
to hire each bus for 5 days is approximately $1,000.
In their talk, Andrea and Tim told us of the make-up of
the cub pack, their sixes and the progress of cubs to become
leaders. They appear to have a very happy combination of a
sought-after activity (their cub pack) and keen cubs who are
quickly expected to take responsibility for their actions and yet
be caring for each other. The venture seemed to be well planned
and to be of obvious benefit to the cubs so a presentation of
$1000 was made.

From Zone Chairperson Lion Beverly von Stein – who is also our ALCMF Trustee for N2 & N4
Cerebral Palsy Alliance Project
Put your foot down for a great cause.
10,000 steps is the recommended daily minimum for a healthy active person.
How many steps did you take today?
For some people, in a busy job, it’s only around 3,000.
Why not aim higher and put those steps to good use?
STEPtember is a fun way to become more active and raise much needed funds for people with
cerebral palsy and their families.

Lions Christmas Cakes
By Lion Mick
We’ll order our cakes towards the end of next month (September) so that they are delivered and distributed
ready for sale beginning in November. Please look around for additional places to sell the cakes – remember we
have lost our champion cake sellers – Fetini and the Fox’s. I will manage the cake ordering, delivery and
distribution and we will store the cakes at Lion Glynis’ garage again.
Cakes will be $16 for the large and $12 for the small – first price rise in at least 3 years. They will be cooked
this year by George Weston and will have the full ‘use by’ period of two years available.
We’re down to 20 of the cakes which are near their ‘use by’ date. Why not buy one at the reduced
rate of $10 and use it for sweets with custard, give it to a neigbour or have a piece each night for
supper with a warm winter toddy! Give Lion Tony a call and lets clear the decks for this year’s stock.
