CHAIRMAN S REPORT

I have been contacted by the Highways Dept in Calderdale regarding a proposal to divert part of a public footpath in Shelf

in fact High Bentley. For those of you who walk around the area the footpath has been diverted for some time now around High Bentley Farm. I have complained many times because of the state of the path which has water running over it, the path is very narrow and has a barbed wire fence. Finally, Calderdale has managed to come to an agreement with the land owner.

If anyone is interested in looking at what is being proposed then email me at [email protected] and I will forward the details to you.

October 12th is the Annual General Meeting for the Residents Association. The AGM is the place to come and meet other villagers, the meeting is not a long one and we always have drinks and nibbles afterwards. We are always looking to recruit new members.

Please contact Carole Dent if you would like your name to be put forward for a place on the Committee. Monthly Meetings are held in the Village Hall on the second Tuesday in the month, starting at 8 p.m. and usually last for about an hour.

It is not necessary for anyone to attend all meetings but it is nice to have new faces and different ideas.

I have a map of the village showing all the public footpaths throughout the village. It is an A2 coloured 40 x 60 cms laminated map. I have a few left and we are looking for a donation of £5. if anyone wants one come and see me.

At last a planning application has been submitted to the Planning Department by Bower Green Warehousing for Demolition of existing buildings and development of 14 houses. The Planning No is 10/00907/FUL . A sketch of the proposed site is in the Village Noticeboard.

COMMONS & GREENS

Update on Proposals for Preservation

There is no longer any requirement to submit an application to the Planning Inspectorate as it was disbanded earlier this year. Local communities are now to liaise directly with their local councils. The completed application has therefore been discussed in detail with the council department and a joint tour of the greens carried out in June. Broad agreement with suggestions was reached with some minor improvements. The application was therefore handed over to the council and we are awaiting their response, once all consultations with necessary departments have been completed.

There will still be a few Monday evenings for walking before the light changes. We leave outside the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. approx. for a one hour walk. We resume our class in the Hall probably about mid-September. It is an easy keep fit and very enjoyable in good company.

The coffee afternoon is still being well Attended so why not come along and enjoy. It is still only 50p for coffee/tea/biscuits .cheap at half the price!

BOUNDARY MILLS

The outing to Boundary Mills was a great success and everybody enjoyed it especially the fish and chips and the people there were so obliging and helpful.

Another outing to Oswaldtwistle Mills for Christmas shopping and again there will be lunch. If you are interested please give your name as we had a full coach before and we don t want anyone to be left out.

THE BUS IN THE VILLAGE

Do you realise that a handful of Residents use the bus regularly so that we keep it. If only more Residents did use it, we would stand a better chance of keeping it, for the future of the village.

5 THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR THE

NORWOOD GREEN NEWS

It is a very nice situation to be able to inform the Residents of Norwood Green that future publication is assured after I have stepped down, this being my last Newsletter.

John & Linda Webster have agreed to take over and I wish them as much pleasure in creating the Newsletter as I have had. They have always shown a lot of interest in the village and some Newsletters ago we were well entertained with the research on people who used to live in the village and where and how they lived, taken from the Census.

On the next pages I have gathered together some photos reflecting that since 1986, when the Norwood Green News started, several amenities in the village have disappeared. But maybe we should reflect that not all is lost! This is a beautiful village and is a real delight in every season with the colour changes amongst the trees, shrubs and flowers throughout the village, and all the amazing shades of colour in the woods that surround us.

My thanks go to everyone who has helped make the Norwood Green News interesting and informative. Also a grateful vote of thanks to those who have delivered the Newsletter regularly and reliably, for 24 years! That takes some doing in all weathers.

8 ART CIRCLE

The sketching in June was in Barbara Armitage s Garden. It was a beautiful sunny evening, and the garden looked lovely and the hospitality was great. Everybody enjoyed a splendid evening. Thanks very much Barbara.

July saw us go to the Holmfirth Art Exhibition, one of the best in this area and again the paintings, sculptures etc. were of a very high standard.

We had another sketching evening in July but the weather was not so good. However three of our members battled the elements and produced some very credible sketches.

NORWOOD GREEN 100 CLUB

The recent winners of the 100 Club are :- 92 The Ramsden Family, 90 Val Lister and 21 A Taylor.

The 100 Club was formed in November 2007, the main aim being to raise funds to assist in the purchase and maintenance of the Village Hall. I am pleased to report that during the last 3 years the Fund Raising Committee has made donations amounting to

£6,000.00, to the Norwood Green Village Hall Charitable Trust. This is after paying out to members £7,200.00 in monthly prizes.

At a recent meeting it was decided that, with regret, the 100 Club will cease with effect from 31st October 2010. It will therefore be necessary for all members who pay by monthly or annual standing order to cancel their payments with their own bank/building society after the 1st October 2010.

We appreciate that this may be disappointing, especially for the members who have been unsuccessful in winning the monthly prize, but due to the dwindling membership it has now become unprofitable to continue.

On behalf of the Committee we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to the 100 Club over the past 3 years and for helping raise such a fantastic amount for the Village Hall.

Margaret Taylor on behalf of the Fund raising Committee.

10 OX HEYS from MARY TWENTYMAN

I ve been showing people in the Shelf area a printout of this photograph which is labelled Ox Heys for the last couple of years. No one has been able to identify it and it doesn t bear any resemblance to the buildings currently at Ox Heys, just below Jaque Royd and officially in Shelf.

Then in the summer I came across to the Coffee Afternoon in the community hall and thought I would enquire if the house was in the Norwood Green area. Two people independently said Oh that s Middle Ox Heys! I must admit I wasn t totally convinced

it looked nothing like the house I remembered.

When I got home I tried to find a photograph of the rendered building which was demolished a few years back and has been replaced by the modern structure on the same site. We have one somewhere, taken in pre digital days, so it could take some time to find!

In the meantime I consulted old maps and on the 1908 OS map, there does look to have been other buildings there in the past. The trouble with the maps is that they don t distinguish very well between barns and other out buildings and dwelling houses.

When I went back to the original postcard in our files, I discovered it had been given to us by the late Mrs Lawn (nee Warbrick), who used to live in Low Moor. On the back she had written Ox Heys and Fearnleys . Why hadn t I checked the original before?

11 11

When I went on the 1911 census website it became clear that a family of Fearnleys had lived at Middle Ox Heys as this entry shows.

George Fearnley Head aged 56 Married an Engine fitter but out of work born Royds Hall Low Moor Hannah Fearnley Wife aged 57 Married born Queensbury Walter Fearnley Son aged 25 Married a Chauffeur for shirt manufacturer Born Horse Close, Wyke Ivy Fearnley Wife aged 21 Married born Norwood Green

George Fearnley s father, James, was the Farm Bailiff at the Low Moor Company s farm at Royds Hall, as later was his son James, George s brother.

And the clinching evidence came with this photograph of the property taken in 2006 from the Panoramio website. The rake of the wall is exactly the same and the windows and door, although altered are obviously the same house as the postcard.

I wonder when the building with the gable end was demolished and if anyone else can remember it?

It took me ages to sort this puzzle out

serves me right

I should have checked the back of the original postcard in the first place

the Fearnley s were obviously friends of Mrs Lawn when they all lived in the same area of Low Moor!
