Year 11 Retreat ‘The Heart Within’

Lake Dewar May 20 to May 22

On Wednesday May 20, the Year 11s went to Lake Dewar for a relaxing three days of peaceful reflection and exciting outdoor activities. These included archery, campfire cooking, a beautifully scenic walk to the rocky gorge and, a common favourite, stand up paddle boarding, which had us all attempting stunts that landed us  in the freezing  lake. Overall  it was a very enjoyable experience that has  left us refreshed and ready for the semester ahead.  Molly Davidson

Year 11  retreat enabled us  to  look at  the  ‘heart within’ and  take a break  and  time  out  from  school  and  everything  else  that  was happening in our lives. Over three great days, we had the opportunity to  really  think about  the way we view ourselves,  the way we  treat others and our perspective on life.  Jess Vo

 

Retreat this year was fantastic, partly because it lasted three days but also because it  offered a  time  to reflect.  I  personally  loved  it  because we  got  to  leave  the stresses  of  school  behind and  relax  in  the  country  where  it  was  quiet and peaceful. My favourite part of retreat was the trivia activity that we did on the first night ‐ it got very competitive!  Kate Burge   The teachers organised many fun activities for us. Affirmation books allowed us to write beautiful messages to each other and our teachers. These messages were extremely touching and everybody dived into writing them with much enthusiasm.  There was also a 'Star Search' competition where we all got to show off our singing and dancing skills.  There were exciting activities as well: stand‐up paddle boarding, archery, campfire cooking, gorge walk and the flying fox.   Natasha Ockenden Retreat was a very joyful experience. I made some new friends, and had some great experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life. We got to really discover our true selves through numerous reflection activities and create some meaningful relationships with others in our year level.   Jessica Azzolini Year 11 Retreat was the perfect time for us to reflect and enjoy ourselves. We had an amazing opportunity to challenge ourselves not only physically in the outdoor activities,  but  also  emotionally.  Our  guest  speaker,  Glenn Manton,  shared  his personal experiences of the challenges that he faced being a professional footballer and also the struggle he had in coming to terms with who he really was. As a year level we bonded over the emotional memories he brought out in everyone and the competitive challenges we were given. By the end of the three day retreat, we were all physically exhausted but we were grateful that we could share the experience together.  Katherine Martin

Sacred Heart Day Friday May 30

Mass  Today we have celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart of  Jesus. As the words  for our opening hymn suggest, we  remember and celebrate our call  to be united with  Jesus  in being kind and compassionate lovers for our world. We celebrate our call to be ‘hearts on fire with the love of Jesus.’  

During the  last two weeks we have held our annual  ‘Blanket Drive’ to collect and buy blankets to give to St. Vincent de Paul for those experiencing homelessness this winter. Our blankets were carried up and placed around the altar during our offertory today. The first group of Issoudun students departing for Hartzer Park on Monday were anointed, as were  the  staff  travelling  with  them.  Mr.  Bryan  Smith  who  has  joined  our  College community since the beginning of the year was also anointed and commissioned by Fr. Chris Murphy.   A highlight of our mass was the beautiful Gospel procession which was prepared by our Year 11 students and Mrs Bradley. Thank you to all who were  involved. It was a  lovely way to begin our Sacred Heart Day.  Sr Megan Donohue

Back at Bentleigh (B@B) and the Hartzer Residential Experience 2014 Begin...... While  for many  June 2 marks  the beginning of  the Hartzer Residential Experience  in Bowral,  for half of our  Issoudun  (Year 9) students it is the beginning of the Back at Bentleigh program. During the last four weeks of Term 2, these students will be working through a program comprising Humanities/English, Science/Maths, Art, PE and RE classes. They will also complete the Certificate in Vocational Preparation. The Back at Bentleigh course will then be repeated during the first four weeks of Term 3 for the first group of students at Hartzer. 

The B@B program draws on Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia; one of the cross‐curriculum priorities of the Australian Curriculum. "An understanding of Asia underpins the capacity of Australian students to be active and informed citizens working together to build harmonious local, regional and global communities, and build Australia’s social, intellectual and creative capital. It also builds understanding of the diversity of cultures and peoples living in Australia, fosters social inclusion and 

cohesion and is vital to the prosperity of Australia." (http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/CrossCurriculumPriorities/Asia‐and‐Australias‐engagement‐with‐Asia)  The Certificate in Vocational Preparation provides a focus on orientation to work options and a pathway to other vocational education and training (VET) opportunities. The purpose of the course is to enable students to develop skills and knowledge to improve their employability and work readiness and to assist them to re‐engage with learning.  In order to run the programs B@B and Hartzer concurrently, some changes to timetabling and staffing are necessary. As several teachers are involved in the program, there will be a number of replacement teachers across year levels. They will continue to teach the curriculum; there should not be any disruption to your daughter's learning.  Ms Lynn Egan Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching

Congratulations to Sarah Rubino, Year 12, featured in a recent edition of the Moorabbin 

Leader.  Sarah was awarded the Victorian Premier’s VCE Award for her score of 49 out of 

50 in Italian last year. 

End of Semester Examinations Year 10 & VCE exams commence next week

Some tips for all - Encourage your daughter to do well, but without putting

extra pressure on her. It is important for your daughter to stay relaxed.

Provide a quiet, well lit area with little distractions to help your daughter study efficiently.

Mark down exam days on your calendar so you and your daughter are both aware of examination dates.

Make sure that your daughter gets enough sleep the night before each exam.

Ensure that your daughter eats a healthy breakfast. Make sure that your daughter gets up early enough so that

she is punctual to all exams. Ensure your daughter has a water bottle and all the

required materials and equipment for each exam.

Issoudun II – I have called you by name; you are mine (Isaiah 43) On  Monday  evening  our  Issoudun  students  attending  Hartzer  Campus  Group  1,  Burradoo, participated  in a Missioning Ceremony. Each one of them were called by name as they received their Issoudun Vest from Ms Anne O’Loughlin. We pray that each of their hearts be open to God, to one another and to their teachers as they embark on this exciting journey together.

“You can never change your past but you can change your future” From Florida USA, the College was privileged to have Reggie Dabbs here with us on Wednesday. A most sought after motivational speaker for young people, Reggie left us with the message that we can change our future by the choices that we make.   Here are some of the comments from the girls:

Post Budget Breakfast

  On Wednesday May 7, five girls from Year 12 (Kim Koelmeyer, Demika Tantra, Emma Sturt, Jasmina Lieu and Martha O’Hagan) were invited by the MP for Bentleigh, Elizabeth Miller, to attend the Post State Budget breakfast.   It is an annual event that invites students from schools within Liberal MP’s electorates to attend, learn about the state budget and ask questions of the Treasurer and a panel of experts. We were shown a rundown of the distribution of funds throughout each sector, the chief area of interest being the railway link with plans to build to additional lines.   Afterwards we were invited to take a photograph with the treasurer and speak more closely with Ms Miller about our thoughts on the budget and news relevant to the college. It was a very informative and enjoyable experience.   Martha O’Hagan Year 12

Reflections from the Kiribati Trip 2014

 During the Term 1 holidays ten students and three teachers spent a couple of weeks in Kiribati. The aim of the trip was to let the students visit a developing country and to experience life as a student at Immaculate Heart College.  

IHC  is  a  boarding  school  run  by  the  OLSH  sisters.  The  experiences  for  our students and  the  teachers was  life changing. To watch  the  incredible singing, dancing  and  enthusiasm  for  learning  in  an  environment  that  is  extremely challenging made us realise how very different our lives are. 

Our  girls  truly  immersed  themselves  into  IHC  life.  They went  to  classes  and taught English, they danced with the students, learning many Kiribati traditions and they spent a night in the dormitory. The affection and love of the students made it easy for the girls to fit in. Our girls were outstanding and on behalf of the school and especially the teachers who went with them, I would like to thank them for their generosity and enthusiasm.  Mrs Gayle Roberts

Some of the girls’ reflections on their experience have been included below:  

Kiribati 2014 was such a moving,  life changing experience.  I can’t explain how inspiring it was to see a population of only 100,000 people working so hard to better their lives. Their limited resources and opportunities are no obstacles for the people of Kiribati. They are constantly trying their hardest to earn a better life for themselves; something we often take for granted in Australia.  

It was truly inspiring to see first hand what an amazing impact our OLSH visits have on the school community of Immaculate Heart College; both financially (by donating stationery, hygiene products and some $2000 towards buying a new truck) as well as just being there with them. My trip to Kiribati did, and continues to, inspire me everyday and I hope to keep in touch with the amazing friends I made for years to come! Phoebe Edema

Dare 2B Youth Conference On  Tuesday May 13,  twenty  girls  from  Years  10  and 11, Ms Oro, Ms Hanlon  and Mrs Malone  attended  the Dare  2B  Youth Conference at Moorabbin Town Hall. It provided us with the skills and knowledge to a successful pathway. It also gave us an insight on education and career pathways and the importance of how a healthy body and mind can contribute to success.  

The guest speakers encouraged us to achieve our full potential and prevent us from being discouraged from education and career pathways due to peer pressure and expectations of others which can have effects on our ability to succeed. Overall, it was a great  day  and  provided  all  of  us  with  a  lot  of knowledge and an insight on education and career pathways.

MUNA 2014  

On  Saturday  and  Sunday May  3  and  4,  we  attended  a  Model  United  Nations Assembly  at  the  Victorian  Parliament. OLSH  representatives were  sponsored  by Moorabbin Rotary Club. The aim of MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) was to experience what it goes on at a UN Assembly, and debate on specific resolutions put forward  on  issues  occurring  around  the world. We were  able  to witness  some amazing  displays  of  public  speaking  and  learn  about  what  is  going  on  in Commonwealth  Countries.  The  assembly  was  very  formal  with  strict  rules  of debating which were  instigated by the Secretary General, hence the name.     Two delegates form a team, which represents one country – ours was Japan.

We had to research a number of resolutions put forward by the United Nations and be prepared to debate our country’s stance on  them.  These  resolutions  included  the  abolition  of  the  death  penalty,  violence  against  women  and  a  solution  to  the Russia/Ukraine crisis. The final week leading up to the MUNA was filled with lots of stress and last minute preparation, including getting to know the rules of debate.  

On both days, we arrived at the Victorian Parliament bright and early to get changed and meet with the other delegates. Forty countries  in total were represented, and each one of us wore the national costume of their nation. Each nation was allocated seating according to the strata they belonged in, for instance, the Western countries. 

The  day  was  divided  into  assembly  sessions  where  separate resolutions were rigorously debated. Amendments were submitted and eventually voted upon. Our resolution created a  long debate. We proposed to amend the abolition of the death penalty, calling for  its  abolition  where  the  most  serious  crimes  had  not  been committed.  

While we were nervous to begin with, we ended up really enjoying the weekend and having a  lot of  fun. Overall,  this was a defining experience  for  the  two  of  us. We made  new  friends  from  other schools also. The weekend provided us with worthwhile experience and opportunity to improve our public speaking and debating skills. Making new friendships with other young people who share similar interests was great also. We would like to thank Mrs Singh for her support  and  special  thanks  to  the  Moorabbin  Rotary  Club  for sponsoring us!

Performing Arts News

VCE Drama Ensemble Assessment Night Our VCE Drama students presented their ensemble performances for assessment on Monday May 12. The ensemble topics this year were Marvellous Melbourne  (Unit 1) and A Perilous  Future?  (Unit 3).   After weeks of planning  and  rehearsing  the  girls performed with energy and enthusiasm to a most appreciative audience which included guest assessors Ms Bronwyn Egan – VCAA Assistant Chief Assessor for Drama and past students Marisa Cesario, Natasha Gates and Laura Colaianni.  The ensemble is a most challenging requirement of VCE Drama; the girls are to be congratulated for their commitment to this performance task. 

Dance Show Congratulations to Ms Gina Coetzee and the Semester 1 Year 7, 8, Issoudun and VCE VET Dance students who presented a brilliant Dance Show on Tuesday May 20 in the College Hall. 

The girls presented dances that they had learnt during their Dance classes this semester and performed with style and confidence to a very appreciative audience. The girls are to be commended for their professional behaviour as they prepared for the night. Their commitment, energy and enthusiasm were evident in the realisation of most engaging performances.
