PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEEisteddfod Update

Again the Concert Band set a very high standard at the annual performance and came away with first prize. Thanks again to Jenny Binovec the band conductor who spends many hours guiding the students to this level. Jenny also spoke extremely highly of the students and their performance. Well done to the Junior Band who received a highly commended for their performance on the day. Thank you to Mrs Kate Redfern and Mrs Tamara Edmunds for accompanying the students on the day.

The senior choir travelled to Joyes Hall on Friday and received a Highly Commended for their section. Congratulations to all the singers and special thanks to Ms Kim Baker for her dedication and commitment to weekly rehearsals throughout the year.

Father’s Day Breakfast and Trivia Night

A very busy day was held last Friday for the P & C committee. They kicked off the day at 6am with a Father’s Day breakfast. This was enjoyed and supported by a lot of families and special thanks to the committee for all their hard work with the organisation around this. The day continued into a wonderful entertaining trivia night. The many donations that were sent in earlier in the year by families provided many wonderful items that formed many raffle items. Thanks must go out also to all the local businesses that supported by providing gift vouchers and items to be raffled or auctioned. Many parents behind the scenes spent many hours canvasing local businesses to ask for donations and I wish to personally thank these parents for their time and commitment. It was a great night that raised funds that support your child at the school through purchasing various indoor and outdoor resources. Thank you sincerely to everyone who supported in some way, shape or form in making this a successful day all round.

Kindergarten 2017 Meet and Greet and Information Talk

This Wednesday afternoon from 3-4pm down near the equipment cola we will be having a welcoming afternoon play and chat for 2017 Kindergarten students and parents. We are hoping the current kinder parents and students will join us for this special occasion.

Secondly, on Thursday 15th September we will be holding an Information session in the library from 6-7pm for 2017 Kindergarten parents.

Health Care Plans

If your child has asthma, epilepsy, allergies etc the school

must be provided with an updated health care procedure/ action plan every twelve months. This is a Department of Education requirement that the Work Health and Safety division monitor closely and strictly.

If your child’s plan is not up to date and something goes wrong the department is not liable. The student’s health is paramount to all staff at Kooringal Public School and we endeavour to take every precaution to eliminate any issues and would appreciate your assistance in updating your child’s plan as soon as possible.

When students are enrolled parents are required to put down any health care needs. Over time these change, for example allergies or asthma may come on at a later stage and you must inform the school of these changes. This allows everyone to be aware and up to date with all medical conditions across the school. If your child has a health care plan or your feel needs a health care plan and you are unsure what to do, please contact Teresa Rutherford in the office and she will assist you.

Bev Jenkyn, Acting Principal

EISTEDDFOD - CHOIRDuring week 7 our wonderful choir went to represent KPS at the Wagga Wagga Eisteddfod. We travelled by bus out to Joyes Hall and all took a breath, when we saw the big stage, huge audience and very official looking adjudicator.

Thirty two girls and boys from Years 3-6 sang one of the choir’s favourite song “Good Time” by Owl City. We received the Highly commended prize with some wonderful comments from the adjudicator like “ tuneful singing and I could hear all your text” and “such a well-rehearsed and disciplined choir’ and “You are an enthusiastic choir and I can see you enjoy your singing”.

Congratulations choir on a fantastic performance, you all made your conductor very proud!

Thankyou to all parents and family who came along to support our Kooringal Public School primary choir!

Kim Baker, Choir Coordinator

BAND NEWSCongratulations to both Junior and Concert Bands for fabulous performances at the Wagga Eisteddfod.

Concert Band is cancelled for next Thursday, 8th September as Year 5 and 6 will be away.

Junior Band is on next week.

BOOK WEEK 2016The 2016 theme for Book Week was “Australia: Story Country”. This year, Kooringal Public School were very excited to combine our Book Week and NAIDOC week activites for a wonderful celebration of Australian stories.

Students and teachers dressed up as favourite characters and paraded proudly! We then enjoyed rug time which was a great opportunity to share a traditional Australian or Indigenous story with family and friends.

It was wonderful seeing so many from the community. Thank you to all our parents / grandparents and carers who helped make the day such a success!

THE KOORINGAL BITE! ISSUE 6: SEPTEMBER 2016

Issue 6: September 2016

Popcorn (makes 4 cups)

Ingredients:

• 1 tablespoon canola oil

• 1/4 cup popping corn

• A little salt

Method

Dear parents, carers and community of Kooringal Public School

I recently visited Kooringal Public School to speak with Stage 3 students regarding ideas around packing a healthy lunch box. With this in mind I thought a popcorn snack might be a useful idea as popcorn can be added to school lunchboxes as a yummy snack or eaten at home. Below are a couple of ideas as to how to make your popcorn spicy or sweet.

Why Popcorn? Without unhealthy additions of lots of salt, butter or sugar, popcorn is an ideal snack that has few kilojoules and lots of fibre.

Popcorn provides energy-producing complex carbohydrates, has a low GI so you don’t get a sugar spike. Being high in fibre, popcorn works to slow digestion and prolong the feeling of fullness so can help with weight maintenance. Popcorn is naturally low in fat and calories, has no artificial additives or preservatives, and is sugar-free.

Siobhain Howard Project Officer Food Security

Heat a heavy based saucepan (that has a tight fitting lid). Add oil, and when hot add popcorn, cover and cook over a medium high heat. Shake frequently while popcorn is popping.

Alternatively, place popcorn and oil into a large microwave safe bowl and cover, then microwave until corn has popped or follow directions on packet OR place some popcorn in a paper bag, seal and microwave.

Serve with a sprinkle of salt, or with either of the mixtures below.

If you want to make the popcorn spicy add the spices while popcorn is warm.

For sweet popcorn, don’t add the salt, then toss in the sugar and spice mixture.

Did you know……….

Air-popped popcorn has 130 kilojoules per cup, oil-popped popcorn has 231 kilojoules per cup, and lightly buttered popcorn has about 559 kilojoules per cup.

So air-pop your popcorn whenever you can!
