Principal’s Report 2018 Budget Planning

In Term 4 each year, our Finance and Facilities subcommittee is charged with the

major undertaking of preparing an ‘Operational Budget’ for the upcoming year.

This involves documenting all sources of revenue & expenditure and making

complex decisions about the extent to which each area/program of the school is

funded. The Operational Budget is finely tuned in line with the number of students

at each level and aims to expend all funds in a given year to support the needs of

those students.

Over the next fortnight, you will receive a letter in the mail detailing all Parent

Payments for 2018. These payments constitute the bulk of the school’s cash

revenue for next year which are crucial for funding the additional programs &

supports we offer to students. After much review, I’m delighted to report that the

two major components of these charges, being the ‘Student Materials & Essential

Educational Items’ and the ‘Incursion/Excursion Payment’ will remain at the same

cost for 2018; $250 and $140 respectively. In maintaining the ‘Student Materials &

Essential Educational Items’ charge next year, we will now purchase all student

materials on your behalf in bulk orders (to further reduce costs) and will have

these ready for all students on their tables on the first day of the new school year.

Consequently, there will be no Book Pack day in January next year. Parents

will no longer need to collect individual classroom supplies for students as

has been the practice in past years.

In moving towards this more streamlined system in

2018, I commend the willingness of our wonderful

teachers to take on this responsibility for all

students at the start of the school year.

When all 2018 Parent Payments have been

finalised by School Council, I will provide some

further notice through the newsletter to ensure all

parents have sufficient information about these

charges, prior to receiving this information in the

mail.

Staffing Update

Our workforce planning for the school’s staffing needs continues to unfold. The school currently has a vacancy for

a Learning Specialist for 2018 as well as several part time positions that still need to be filled. As soon as these

positions are filled, I will publish a final 2018 staffing profile through the Newsletter.

We congratulate Stephanie Taylor on her appointment to Armstrong Creek PS, which is a new school that will

open in the Geelong area at the start of 2018. There was enormous interest from teachers in Victoria in this new

school and it is certainly a testament to Stephanie’s outstanding teaching capabilities that she has secured this

new position. Whilst we are excited for her appointment, she will certainly be missed at Willy North!

Willy North Communication Practices

The Community Engagement subcommittee of School Council is very

eager to hear your voice in regards to the effectiveness of the school’s

current suite of communication strategies. We particularly want to hear

about your preferences for receiving information from the school as well as

how you would like to communicate with the school.

If you are planning for your child to have a lunch order, try ordering the lunch order the night before. There has been a couple of days when ordering the lunch order in the morning has cause some internet issues and lunch orders not going through.

Uniform Shop News Primary School Wear (PSW) is our official Uniform supplier. Uniforms can be purchased at the store located at Unit 1, 128 Bertie Street Port Melbourne. Items can also be purchased online. Email portmelbourne@psw.com.au.

Student Safety

Please take the time to regularly remind your child/ren about safety, especially when going to and from school. Here are the important points to mention:

Do not to talk to strangers and never accept a ride from a stranger, or accept lollies or gifts from a stranger.

Immediately report any issue or problem you may have when going to or from school, to your mum and dad, or to your teacher, the Principal, Assistant Principal or office staff.

Always get permission from mum or dad before going to play with a friend after school and always let mum and dad know where you will be and what time you will be home.

We advise that, wherever possible, children should travel to or from school with an adult or with their friends, rather than travel alone.

Early Release

All children collected from school before 3.30pm must be signed out at the Office. Parents will be handed an ‘Early Release Pass’ to hand to the supervising teacher. If a child is signed out at Recess or Lunch time, the Office staff will call the child to the Office and then ensure the Early Release Pass is given to the supervising teacher.

Bikes & Scooters Many children ride bikes and scooters to school each day. All bikes and scooters must be locked up in either the Bike or Scooter Enclosure to prevent theft. Please ensure your child has a chain and a lock.

All children who ride a bike or scooter must wear a helmet which is a requirement by the Government. The school regularly reminds all children about wearing helmets for their safety.

All bikes, scooters, skateboards, ribstic and helmets must be labelled, with your child’s name and class. Children are reminded they must walk their bike, scooter, skateboard or ribstic to and from the school gates. No bikes are to be brought through the school buildings and we request, where possible, that scooters are also not walked through the building.

Working With Children Cards Cardholders who are required to renew their WWCC will no longer need to go to Australia Post to lodge a paper form and present their current card. Cardholders will go to the WWCC website to complete their renewal application online and, if applying for an Employee Check, pay the fee using a credit card when using the online renewal process, cardholders will be notified by SMS, letter or email 28 days before their WWCC is due to expire. It is important for cardholders to keep their contact details up to date so that they receive this important reminder.

After receiving a notification, individuals continuing to do child-related work should go to MyCheck on the WWCC website and apply to renew their check. Cardholders will be asked to register with MyCheck if they have not already done so. Once logged in to MyCheck, cardholders will be prompted to confirm or update their personal contact and work details, complete the online form and, if applying for an Employee Check, pay the non-refundable fee. Before giving blood:

Drink up - in the 24hours before donation, especially in warm weather, have at least 3 good sized glasses of water/juice in the 3

hours prior to your visit.

Eat up - make sure you eat something in the 3 hours before donating.

Bring ID - please bring at least one form of photo identification.

Heat Health With Melbourne temperatures rising it is important that we prepare for hot days and look after others,

particularly children, the elderly and anyone with a pre-existing illness/condition.

Student’s, please remember to pack your hat and drink bottle every day and apply sun cream before school.

When hot days are forecast, freeze a big water bottle overnight to keep it cool all day. Frozen grapes and

watermelon make great fruit snacks too.
