Semester 2
For year 7 – 12 students, the new semester started on Monday and
students received a new timetable and some have new subjects and
teachers. Reports will be distributed next Friday and it is an important
time to reflect on achievements as well as setting goals for the rest of the
year. I hope you are able to take the time to sit down with your son or
daughter to discuss their report. Parents are also encouraged to make contact with teachers,
either through email or by making an appointment via the front office. One of our aims this
year, is for staff to foster strong partnerships with families, as research shows that when
parents are involved, students have greater success.
Showcasing the learning
Last Friday, the Minister for Education Susan Close MP and the ABC visited our College to
see the Bilingual program in action. They were extremely impressed with our students who,
after only five months, could show their new learning including speaking, writing and reading
Mandarin Chinese. Students invited Minister Close to join them in the Tai Chi lesson and
they enjoyed dancing and chatting to the journalist from ABC. Erik Ma, Kylie Tuckey and the
year 3 bilingual students are to be congratulated for presenting our College in such a positive
light. It is pleasing to note that we now have very large numbers attending the Principal
Tours and enrolments have doubled this year both in year 8 and Reception, with some
families putting their name down for 2022!
As the term ends, we farewell and acknowledge some staff members who have been here on
contract. We thank Tom Gordon (Sec English) who has been offered a position in the music
industry, Sabrina Prisco (Sec Maths) who has a contract at Underdale High School . Rod
Sutherland (leadership) has a position at Fulham North Primary School and Nunung
Lehmann has completed her contract in the 4/5 class.
A reminder that Monday 24th
July is a Pupil Free Day and staff will be involved in
professional development. I look forward to seeing students Tuesday 25th July ready for
another productive term.

Issue 7 July
At the end of week 4 the year 4/5’s from class M3
cooked pancakes in the learning street with Ms
Lehmann. The cooking was a practical lesson for proce-
dural genre they learned. They took turns in preparing
and cooking them while working on putting together the
written procedural genre. Lemon, sugar, honey and jam
were the toppings that were offered to sweeten the soft
and moist pancakes that were made from wholemeal
flour. They all enjoyed the pancakes and learning task.

Uniform Shop
Plympton International College advises parents the
uniform shop will be open as usual this Thursday from
3pm to 4pm. It will not be open during the last week of
term. For uniform orders and enquiries please call Amy

Student Pick-Up / Drop-Off
Both the Errington Street and Myer Avenue car parks
are fully occupied by the staff of PIC and Errington
schools. The dropping off and picking up of students
in the Errington or Myer car parks is not permitted at
any time. (This is in line with DECD Policy). Many
parents park along Myer Avenue and Gardner Street
and then walk their children the short distance to school.
Thank you for your support of our students safety and
well-being.
OSHC Camp Australia
In order to maintain the safety and wellbeing of
students at Plympton International College when
teachers are not scheduled for yard duty, students who
arrive before 8:25am and/or are still on site after
3:20pm will be sent to OSHC (Out of School Hours
Care). Parents will be contacted by the OSHC
supervisor regarding their child’s attendance at
either before or after school OSHC. Payments will be
calculated based on your CCB rate and is payable to
Camp Australia. Please note that teachers are on yard

Care for children is always available
Winter can be a busy time for emergency departments and
it is important to consider whether it really is an
emergency.
For minor illness or injury, there are a range of care
options to consider, including your local GP or pharmacy.
Local health services, including information about after
hours services, can be found through the National Health
Services Directory at www.nhsd.com.au.
If it is an emergency, emergency care for children is
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some conditions
that are not life-threatening for an adult can be more
serious for babies and young children. In particular, young
babies with fever need to be assessed by a doctor. In an
emergency or life threatening situation, always call triple
zero (000) for an ambulance.
For more information, including emergency department
locations and information about other care options, visit
www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/careforchildren.
R/1 Class Zoo Excursion
In week six, Ms Claire and the R/1 class went on an
excursion to the Adelaide Zoo. The class spent the
morning exploring different animals around the zoo and
discovering about the places they live. The students then
attended an education session with Zoo staff. The session
was about caring for animals where students took part in
activities identifying different animal needs. Thank you to
all the staff and parents who joined us and made it such a
fantastic experience.

SUSTAINABILITY
Students in year 4/5 have been learning about
Sustainability through their Science and Geography.
They have been actively observing how many food
wraps, zip bags, drinking bottles and cans
accumulate in the bins over three days. They
learned that rubbish can either end up as landfill or
washed out to the sea. Sea animals think the
rubbish is food or a toy. Our rubbish means disaster
for them and us in the future. To minimize the
number of food wraps they came up with simple
steps to be their solution; nude food/wrap-free food
for school. Many of them have been following their
action plan and rewarded by Ms Lehmann with their
dojo points. Joel and Jiakun have the lead on
following the nude food movement.
To pass on the information they have been actively
engaged in sharing power point presentations of
their learning in the assemblies to invite others to
follow the practice sustainable lifestyle including
nude food.

Managing Type 1 Diabetes in Children: A Parenting
Perspective
Being a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes can be
extremely stressful. The University of Queensland is
seeking parents of children with type 1 diabetes to take
part in a research study that will explore factors that
could help or hinder parents in managing their child’s
diabetes. If you are a parent of a 2- to 10year-old child
with type 1 diabetes, we would love to hear from you! By
sharing your experiences (confidentially) you will help us
identify better ways for health care professionals to sup-
port parents and families.
To complete the online survey, please go to:
https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/type1/.
For further information about the project or to request a
survey to be posted to you, please email Jade
Grambower at [email protected] or call Dr Amy
Mitchell at the Parenting and Family Support Centre at
The University of Queensland on (07) 3346 1202.
Thank-you!
Science and Engineering Challenge
As part of the college's increasing STEM focus, Year 9/10
students had the opportunity to take part in the Science
and Engineering Challenge at Flinders University.
Students worked in small teams to solve challenges
including designing and making a Mars buggy,
transmitting codes via optical fibre, networking cities using
electric circuits and building structures to meet different
purposes. It was a great opportunity for students to
demonstrate their teamwork skills, while applying their
maths and science understanding in a range of design
and technology methods. Our students competed at a
high level throughout the day and finished 5th overall.
We will be hosting similar challenges at school later this
year to prepare Year 8/9 students for the challenge in
2018.
