Interview with Ing. JAN JAROLÍM, mayor of Prague 9 district
Therefore I was pleased that this international exhibition will take place in our ninth Prague district. I expect it to
offer and interesting and inspiring program. Without doubt there will be numerous original foreign collections as
well as expositions of well known Czech authors. As far as I know, there are also many workshops, sales
possibilities and presentations. I believe that these will enrich the numerous supporters of the textile techniques
and will be inspirational for future projects.
How can the city district profit from an international textile exhibition?
I assume that it will bring to our district a large number of both foreign and domestic visitors, from which may
benefit our hoteliers and retailers. However, I see its biggest contribution in its cultural and social importance.
Thanks to the events’ promotion, the image of Prague 9 District will be enriched and increased.
Patchwork brings to Prague 9 quarterly meetings of Bohemia Patchwork Club and thousands of domestic and
foreign visitors on a daily basis. What can your city district offer to them?
There may be various options for further cooperation. For example in some of our facilities – art therapy in health
care or other activities in our cultural and maternal center Knoflík, and of course, schools or the Retirement
Home. I also have in mind potential exhibitions in the Gallery “9” etc. As a dynamic locality we offer our visitors
all the services needed. By us, they will always find understanding and acceptance.
For the professional public, Prague 9 clearly is the “patchwork” address, the Prague Patchwork Meeting
Exhibition in the Wellness Hotel Step, which will take place from 9th to 11th April 2010 is however intended for
general public as well. Will you invite the citizens for the largest exhibition of textile techniques in the CEE
region?
I will invite them with pleasure. That is why I decided to shelter the whole event. I would also like to add that the
topic of this years’ competition collection is PATWAYS and that in the sense of communication linking, evolution,
searching and knowledge. Which is nowadays, when controversy becomes a national “sport” and political
arguments are a boring trend, very necessary. I personally prefer searching common solutions, listening and
considering different opinions. That seems to me as a constructive way for a future development.
What do words patchwork and quilting say to you?
Actually nothing until recently. But when I received the first email with the
information that the traditional exhibition should be held in our city district for the
first time and the organizers asked me to shelter it, I could not hesitate of course. I
researched the web page of Prague Patchwork Meeting and other professional
links, including foreign ones and I have to admit I am very fond of this art. I also
questioned my wife and daughter, who knew exactly what’s going on, making me
feel a bit ashamed.
Why did a mayor – man decided to support a “female” hobby?
It probably is a female hobby, but as I stated, many of the quilts raised my interest.

CZECH PATCHWORK STARS – Klára Beránková
I have learnt about patchwork from my friend and colleague Saša back in 2005. At first it was just a way to kill time
by hand sewing of balloons. It was first later when I made two quilts by hand and finally decided to purchase the
sewing machine. This was connected to buying basic tools and clothes. I have entered the Spolek Litomyšl (Local
Patchwork Club in Litomyšl) right after it was established and I am very proud of this membership. Meeting
women who were so much more advanced has inspired and motivated me.
The start seemed rather quick - every month a new technique. Today, we know most of the beginners’ as well as
advanced quilting techniques, so it is time to for new patterns and styles. Mrs. Štěrbová has accepted our
invitation to Litomyšl and we were all looking forward to the workshop “Rhapsody” by Ricky Tims. I was truly
amazed. Until then I only made quilts following given patterns, with very few alternations. But this was something
completely else. Even creating the layout is completely unique! I started working straight away. A bit nervous
about mastering the project, I sticked to a smaller size.
Rather demanding sewing is compensated by the numerous application possibilities. Pure joy. In the summer a
friend from Virginia (quilter herself) visited me and seeing the quilt, she immediately made pictures promising to
show it to Ricky Tims next time she’d see him in a workshop. This January an e-mail from Ricky arrived. My knees
were trembling a bit. His congratulation on mastering “Rhapsody” cheered me up. We exchanged a few e-mails
and from this great, untouchable and abstract idol in our field suddenly became concrete person. Since he is a
passionate musician, I managed to attract him to Litomyšl and we can hope, that he will squeeze visiting the Czech
Republic and Litomyšl in his busy schedule. On his webpages, I have watched his show intended for hundreds of
quilters, a great experience. For us a bit unusual, but definitely a great atmosphere and a lot of experiences!
Maybe we will have the honor on day as well!
Many ideas to all of us and the best regards, Klára Beránková.

Dear colleagues,
As a native from Ostrava, Czech Republic, I do not really have a
lot of chances to meet in person with many of you; therefore I
am glad to take the opportunity to introduce myself to you
through this newsletter.
I have firstly encountered Patchwork in 2008 when I have
decided to pursue this topic for my diploma thesis on the College
of Education at University of Ostrava. Until than, I have only seen
Patchwork on rare occasions, and I did not really know what
challenge am I about to master. Even my thesis mentor told me,
how crazy I am to tackle this topic. Fortunately, I have studied
vocational school of clothes and fashion craft, and, therefore, I
have no problems to understand and figure out how a piece of
dress or other textile product is done. And then, while I was
visiting the Patchwork exhibition in the community center K-trio
in Ostrava, I have meet Jana Štěřbová, a real Patchwork expert,
and asked her to supervise my diploma thesis.
Regarding my Patchwork creations, I rather turn to the modern
approach – the art quilts. I really like to arrange surfaces of those
quilts and the never ending hunt for new ideas on the modern
interpretation of Patchwork, the original field of functional
needlecraft. On the other hand, I extremely appreciate and
respect the tailors of classical Patchwork who I admire for their
precise approach to the work.
In times, when I do not work on Patchwork, I am usually occupied
with the production of hand-made jewelry; batik silk scarf,
handkerchiefs, and ties; handbags, and so on. I like to work with
decoupage, ceramics, or encaustics. And because all my creations
started to uncontrollably pile up in our living room, I have
decided to found a creative center ‘STOJAN’ (‘easel’ in Czech) in
Ostrava – Mariánské Hory. ‘Stojan’ offers an extensive menu of
creative and art courses for anyone who enjoys relaxation and
creativity at the same time.
Apart from the creative courses, ‘Stojan’ also offers a wide range
of art and creative requisites and materials such as beads and
jewelry components; textile, silk, glass, porcelain, wood, and
metal paints; acrylic and tempera paints; various types of flat and
round brushes, baking plasticine Cernit (an equivalent to Fimo);
enamel powder; various decorative pieces and many gift items
which I produce.
A lot of these art and creative requisites – mostly textile ones –
can be found in my store at the Prague Patchwork Meeting in
Step hotel from 9th to 11th April 2010. It will be my pleasure to
meet you all there!
Sincerely, Your Tereza Janáčková and the creative center
