March 2013

Dear Crestwood Primary Families,

It has been a very busy month for Crestwood Primary. Through the generous support of the PTO our school enjoyed a spec-

tacular performance of the ballet “Miss Spider’s Tea Party” by the Cuyahoga Youth Ballet on Friday, February 22.

Mrs. Eileen Kelly organized the opportunity for the ballet and for each classroom to obtain the book Miss Spider’s Tea Party

donated by the PTO. The students were mesmerized by the beautiful dancing in the ballet, as well as the ballerinas visiting

each of the classrooms.

It was wonderful to see all the families attend our parent teacher conferences in February. I truly believe in the importance

of the partnership between parents, teachers, and staff to work together to make every child successful. I continue to

thank all of you for your support of Crestwood Primary School.

Our second graders will be taking the IOWA and the CogAT tests during the weeks of March 4-15. Please avoid making any

doctors appointments during this time period if possible. It is very important for your second grader to get a good night’s

rest and a healthy breakfast to do their best.

As always a special thanks to our parent organization (PTO) for providing the wonderful evening meals for the staff during

the conference nights. The staff at Crestwood Primary greatly appreciate the PTO’s hard work that they put forth for the

CPS students and staff all year long.

Sincerely,

Beth Trivelli, Crestwood Primary Principal

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for Tests

• Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies sug-

gest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and con-

centration.

• Help your children by encouraging a good night’s rest before ex-

ams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their

work.

The morning class read

chel Peterson (looking like

This month the kindergarten stu-

dents were busy working hard learn-

ing twenty four sight words. They

learned position words and direc-

tional words in math. Our kindergar-

ten students have been busy cele-

brating the 100th day of school. Dur-

ing this special day the children

counted out sets of 100 items,

made snacks, cre-

ated t-shirts and

sang songs.

Classroom Happenings

Hiram College students have helped

our first graders learn about science

with visits to our classrooms about the

scientific process. The first graders con-

tinue to use the “cups” process to use

in their daily writing. The first graders

are celebrating the love of literacy

through a Dr. Seuss week of activities.

Second GradeSecond GradeSecond GradeSecond Grade

The second graders are working with partners using

the Ipads to create synonyms skits. The Cuyahoga

Valley Youth Ballet recently performed the ballet, Miss Spider’s Tea Party for the en-

tire Crestwood Primary Building. In preparation for this outstanding performance,

students in Mrs. Grebb’s class participated in a tea party after reading the story,

Miss Spider’s Tea Party. Mrs. McCoy, a retired Crestwood teacher, brought in her

family china and helped to host the tea party. Students learned abut the history of

tea parties and their European connection. The students used real linen napkins

and china teacups accompanied with lemon wedges, sugar lumps, finger sandwich-

es, and mints!

Meet Miss Prax

Lauren Prax is the student teacher for Mrs. Skully’s art classroom. She is studying at Kent State University. She really enjoys working with the students and helping them to discover per-sonal meaning within their artwork. Miss Prax thinks Crestwood Primary School has been a welcoming and wonderful experience.

The first grade students are making art maps and the kindergarten students are making story-boards. Miss Prax will miss her students when she has to leave to finish her semester teaching at the high school.

In February and March KSU nutrition students

will visit students in the Crestwood Primary

Building lunch room as part of the “Munch

Bunch” program. They will talk about the health benefits of eating

fruits and vegetables. They will return once per week to offer incen-

tives (stickers, pencils) to students who pack and eat fruits and vege-

tables or eat these items on the school lunch tray.

Head Lice Questions and Answers!Head Lice Questions and Answers!Head Lice Questions and Answers!Head Lice Questions and Answers!

Since the start of the school year we have had lots of questions about head lice. We have

had a few cases and would like to share some common questions and follow-up information:

Have there been any epidemics in the school?Have there been any epidemics in the school?Have there been any epidemics in the school?Have there been any epidemics in the school?

No, there have been no large class outbreaks. We can only go by what is reported, so it is very helpful for

parents to call us and let us know about their child, so appropriate treatment and follow-up can be dis-

cussed.

My child has been scratching her head a lot. Does this mean she has lice?My child has been scratching her head a lot. Does this mean she has lice?My child has been scratching her head a lot. Does this mean she has lice?My child has been scratching her head a lot. Does this mean she has lice?

Itching of the head or the feeling that something is crawling on the head does not mean a child has lice.

The only way to confirm a child has lice is to find the actual bugs. The easiest way to confirm is to comb

the hair. Remember, lice do not fly or jump- they crawl and are usually spread by close contact. Nits do

not move, so if something whitish or black on the hair shaft moves, it is not a nit.

My child’s friend has lice. Should I treat my child just in case?My child’s friend has lice. Should I treat my child just in case?My child’s friend has lice. Should I treat my child just in case?My child’s friend has lice. Should I treat my child just in case?

Treatment for lice should be done only when live bugs are present. Treatment is not preventive, and can

be expensive. It can take up to two or three weeks after a contact for symptoms to appear, depending on

how much scratching a child may do. If your child is exposed, parents may want to comb their child’s

head with a lice comb for about two weeks.

My child has lice. Do I need to clean my house and car?My child has lice. Do I need to clean my house and car?My child has lice. Do I need to clean my house and car?My child has lice. Do I need to clean my house and car?

Head lice and their eggs soon die if separated from the human host. Live lice die in a day or two, so vacu-

uming is not really necessary. The focus is on the head!!! It is advised to change bed linens and clean

personal hair items – put in boiling water for a few minutes. Children should have their own personal

hairbrushes and sleep alone in their beds. Stuffed animals can be put in the dryer on high for 20

minutes. Sprays are not recommended as they unnecessarily expose the child to residues.

I have heard olive oil and mayonnaise are effective treatments. Is this true?I have heard olive oil and mayonnaise are effective treatments. Is this true?I have heard olive oil and mayonnaise are effective treatments. Is this true?I have heard olive oil and mayonnaise are effective treatments. Is this true?

If your child has lice, please call the school nurse and discuss proper treatment. The most important

thing is to use a product properly, and remove bugs from the hair. If a child has head lice, they should be

checked and combed daily until no live bugs are found for two weeks.
