RETAIL PREDICTIONS FOR 2027

E-commerce will become a ‘traditional’ businessWe anticipate the birth of a re-imagined retail industry driven by the integration of online, offline, logistics and data

across a single value chain. With e-commerce itself rapidly becoming a “traditional business,” pure e-commerce players will soon face tremendous challenges.#

Mr. Jack Ma, Founder and Executive Chairman, Alibaba

Hyperconnectivity will create new dynamics in retailM2M connections will make retail more efficient and effective. Connected retail display cabinets and smart product tags will be commonplace, enabling retailers to track demand and report on stock levels in real time, which in turn will improve supply chain effectiveness.

Mobile-first advertisingApplication advertising is already widespread and will become increasingly scalable and sophisticated going forward. Messaging platforms will also continue to be a key touch point in the future. ^

The Future of E-commerce: The Road to 2026, Published by Ovum

More pop-up stores, and bespoke services are expectedRetailers will need to come to customers to identify how, when and where they want. This will blend connectivity, the physical product and intangible services.

Shopping in 2027 will be…Payment will be about connectivity, everywhere and biometrics–imagine paying for your groceries with your thumbprint. It will be tied to factors like your individual profile, payment details, purchase history, and more.

Customer empowerment and even greater influenceCustomers will be more empowered than ever and given more control over their shopping experience. Retailers that provide a truly

unique, enjoyable experience and prepare their associates to provide excellent service will have the advantage.

IoT-driven shopping experienceWith the growth of the IoT, customers will enjoy an increasingly connected or “smart” shopping experience through a

network linking the physical and digital worlds into an ecosystem of devices. *

Mr. Doug McMillon, Chief Executive Officer, Walmart

Large scale data integrationAI and machine learning technology will change shopping behavior with large-scale data integration, becoming a predictive commerce model. The purchasing journey will be automated, timely, personalised and highly accurate.

Mr. Vincent Lau, General Manager, China, Target

The Hottest Communication Channel: Live Streaming Video

From high profile launches to product demonstrations, live streaming enables retailers to not only share their message while giving it a personal touch but generate content to use later. It also meets the customer demands of a frictionless shopping experience: with real-time interaction customers can know if the product is in stock and ask questions before they buy.

Changing the Shopping Experience: AR & VR

More engaging, more fun, more memorable. This technological development gives retailers the chance to transform the retail space and make the online sector more immersive to mimic the in-store experience. It can help retailers design areas more intelligently for customers.

More Personalisation, More Sales

Smarter, more personalised product recommendations are the key to driving sales. Similarly, real-time personalisation of digital ad campaigns driven by this data delivers much higher ROI on ad spend. Retailers shouldn't overlook the importance of personalisation in digital marketing strategies.

I travelled from Macau to join the Expo for the first time on behalf of my company. We’re hoping to find retail and marketing solutions for our hotel and catering businesses. I’ve seen many interesting online and offline interactive solutions which I believe will become major trends in the near future. I also got to talk with many exhibitors from different countries which was a worthwhile learning opportunity.Johnwin Lee Director of Food & Beverage, MGM Macau

Attending the Expo gave me the chance to experience a number of new and unique retail solutions, many from overseas. These new ideas have a positive impact on the retail industry in Hong Kong and help us stay better connected to global trends. The Expo is especially relevant for retailers, particularly those that are struggling to break through the bottleneck of the business. I highly recommend industry peers to attend.Tommy LiCreative Director, Tommy Li Design Workshop Ltd.

The Inevitable Trend of the Future Retail WorldChow Sang Sang started to develop their online retailing business in 2000 when Internet Retailing was not that popular in the retail market. “At that time, as we had the vision that the internet would become very popular and a powerful tool integrating with our daily life. We saw the necessity of developing online retailing,” said Genevieve.

Shopping without Boundaries

The business was growing steadily, particularly when Chow Sang Sang launched online retailing in Mainland China. Online retailing allowed Chow Sang Sang to expand their customer base from Hong Kong to the overseas markets. Through Chow Sang Sang’s website and online retailing platform, and together with the strong delivery network reaching over 40 countries, overseas consumers were able to know more about and even purchase the products of the luxury brand.

However, in the luxury market customers don’t always feel comfortable walking into physical stores, trying products and purchasing immediately. Genevieve says launching online retailing was one way to solve this challenge. “With our website serving as the online retailing platform, consumers can research more information about the products, take a look at the pictures and videos before making decisions. They can then make an appointment with our frontline staff and experience the real products in-store.”

Sustainable Improvement and Development

Online retailing has become an important part of business operations. While the online retailing platform of Chow Sang Sang has been running smoothly run for years, Genevieve said there was no end to its development as

In 2000, leading luxury jewelry retailer, Chow Sang Sang, stepped into the online retailing world. 16 years later, their online retailing business has been well established, creating unexpected business opportunities. Chow Sang Sang’s Omni-channel Development & eCommerce General Manager, Genevieve Chow, shares her success story.

technology continually changes. “We need to evolve based on ever-changing customer behavior. The widespread use of smartphones and tablets has changed consumer browsing habits. We have to make sure we adapt our website design to make user-friendly and responsive content.”

Genevieve emphasizes that an effective online retailing platform must to be customer-centric. It should be able to provide suitable channels for individuals

to research information and make purchases online as well as schedule appointments with frontline staff.

Effective Supply Chain Connects Online and Offline Stores

Successful online retailing requires a seamless connection between the online system, warehouse and offline physical stores. The online and offline storage information has to be synchronized and accurate,

and the online system has to be effective and quick enough to respond to customers’ orders by sending the correct information to the warehouse and physical stores. “We have two warehouses in Hong Kong and China for eCommerce dispatch,” said Genevieve. “If a customer places an order online, the specific product will be arranged in the warehouse and delivered to the customer at once. If the customer requests pick up or to experience the product in one of our physical stores, the product will be delivered to the store directly.”

According to Genevieve, Chow Sang Sang acquires existing technologies and services from suppliers in the market to build their online retailing platform. However, when it comes to the core system, they built it themselves due to the unique nature of their industry. “Our product price is greatly affected by gold prices, meaning that we always have to adjust our product price and our system has to be flexible to react immediately to the changes,” said Genevieve.

“It is not all about sales but the enhancement of brand awareness and customer engagement. What we can see is that our online retailing platform is really able to improve the shopping experience of our customers and it is what we always want to achieve,” said Genevieve.

The Future: Big Data and PersonalisationRecalling the goal of their online retailing development, Genevieve said they hoped to provide informed choices and an omni-channel shopping experience to their customers. “By analyzing big data, we will be able to further understand consumer behavior and conduct targeted marketing,” said Genevieve. “The more personalised content our target customers receive, the more we arouse their willingness to purchase products.”

While online retailing currently only occupies 5% of the brand’s total sales, Chow Sang Sang will continue to invest in developing their online retailing platform and they think that it is worthy to do so. “It is not just about sales but the enhancement of brand awareness and customer engagement. Our online retailing platform is really able to improve the shopping experience of our customers and it is what we always want to achieve.”
