For those members who have not yet participated in a show or a workshop, please check out what is being offered in the fall and plan on taking part – you will make wonderful friends and find inspiration and enthusiasm.

Thank you to those who participated in the Art Challenge from photos from our Photography Group, and congratulations to Lorraine Nagle on having her “Rise Up” artwork purchased for the County’s Permanent Art Collection!

Have you registered yet for the Member Appreciation Evening??? We need to know the numbers by September 12 to inform the caterers. This is a social evening with a catered dinner, and then an enjoyable talk by Brenda Robinson, who entertained the group last year. Please sign up! No charge.

December meeting and it would be nice to have most of the positions filled by that date. If you are interested in participating on a Committee or on the Board, please email Sonja at [email protected]. The Board has 7 “at large” Board positions –members do not have to chair a Committee in order to serve on the Board. These “at large” Board positions are designed to encourage members to have their say and vote regarding Society activities and composition.

Thanks, Sonja.

Thank you to:

Antoinette Alleyne, Dianna Sapara, Arlene Bowles, Trish Haugen, and Norma Callicott for demonstrating your artwork in the Loft during the tour and luncheon by Strathcona County and visiting agricultural dignitaries. Also to Dianna and Brian L for covering the Loft Gallery on July 7 and 8. Much appreciated.

Shellie Patzer, Bonnie Halliday and Marie Schelske for serving, during the summer, on the Committee to screen applicants for the position of Ottewell Rental Coordinator/Administrator. Your time on this is much appreciated.

WORKSHOP REVIEWS: Carol Nelson Workshop

From Trish Haugen: What an intense three days learning from a master. Carol was a wonderful instructor. She did well-spaced instruction then work time. People were so engrossed in the process and the activity at hand that you could have heard a pin drop as people went about their creative process after each segment of instruction. She was so positive and encouraging with her genuine sense of humour and gave terrific one on one help as needed. I think everyone really benefited from the experience although they were very tired by the end of the three days. I am, personally, very happy with the results I achieved learning her techniques and approaches and hope everyone was as well. From Barbara Mitchell: The three day workshop with Carol Nelson was a wonderful experience in color and design, sometimes stepping out of our comfort zone to embrace something new she was showing us, stepping into collage and the brilliance of fluid acrylics, along with a lot of fun and innovative ideas that continually flowed throughout the whole workshop. Carol is very generous with sharing her expertise and helping each one of us to achieve what we wanted to see in our art work. Her own artwork is amazing and truly an inspiration. She has a unique way of capturing elements of nature, that she is so willing to share with us. I would recommend her workshop to anyone!

Report on 3rd Hidden Treasures Open Art Studio Tour

Our third studio tour on June 23 & 24th was a successful event with good attendance numbers, sales and weather! We had 11 artists in 10 home studios plus 9 artists in the barn. Visitors enjoyed viewing the actual creative space of our artists. It provided our artists with an opportunity to show their entire art collection and really show how they create and what inspires them. The number of visitors to home studios varied. Visitors to rural studios varied from 24 to 57 and depended on signage and location. Visitors to urban studios varied from 55 to about 100. The barn drew about 200 people, which was on par with 2017. The event was heavily advertised in the Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan and Beaumont newspapers as well as in a Daytripper section of the Edmonton Sun and Edmonton Examiner. The Sherwood Park news also published an article about the event. We advertised on Facebook, ASSC website and many other sources on the internet. Brochures were distributed widely across County businesses. Individual artist participants also heavily promoted the event through email, invitations, and Facebook promotion. Our studio tour yellow signs directed people to the studios. The Committee is planning for 2019 and will share this soon with members. Any artist wishing to show their entire art collection without having to haul everything to a show, should seriously consider becoming involved in this successful event!! If you have questions or need help with how to set up your home for this event please contact Norma Callicott at 780 464 2519 or [email protected] or Margaret Klappstein at 780 467 3092 or [email protected]

Loft Gallery and Gift Shop

(Open Saturday and Sunday 12 – 4)

• Please note: The deadline to apply for a Feature Artist spot or Solo February Show in 2019 is September 1, 2018.

We are busy organizing for the September-October rotation. Registered artists are asked to drop off their Gift Gallery items at 2:00 on September 4 and Loft Gallery artists can drop off paintings at 4:00 on September 4. The Loft Committee will start hanging the show shortly afterwards. For members wishing to accumulate volunteer hours, please check the Loft Gallery shifts page under Members. Please note that the schedule has been altered somewhat to coincide with days and times set by the Fall Show. Please email [email protected] to volunteer for any shifts you want. Looking ahead….. The deadline for registering for the November-December rotation is October 1. If you have recorded 20 hours of volunteer time during 2017 and 2018 and have attended 3 meetings, you may enter up to 7 paintings (with consideration of size). If you are a new member this year, you may enter one painting and if you have recorded 10 hours of volunteer time, you may enter 2 paintings. Due to the lateness of the Fall Show, I would ask that inventory lists be in by October 15, although you may do slight adjustments following the Fall Show if needed.

They can submit as many photos as they would like. Please do this ASAP. I really would appreciate it if you would also share on your Facebook page. We need to get this out.
