Have you ever wondered how the Shelter operates? All operating expenses come from adoptions, fundraising and donations. In addition to the dollars that are needed to operate, there are tasks that must be completed. Currently the Shelter employs 7 dedicated people to clean, administer medications and care for the well being of each animal. But did you ever wonder how everything else gets done? Such as: payroll and tax information, accounts payable and receivable, foster care, grooming, special boarding situations, bathing, conducting community tours, professional services such as painting, carpentry, and electrical work, dog walking/exercising, cat socializing, lending buildings for meetings, equipment and trucks for events, transporting animals to veterinary appointments, planning and working at fundraising events, attending committee and board meetings, creating animal care guidelines, employee relations, designing newsletters, animal temperament testing, working adoption hours, meeting with potential adoptee during closed hours, photo taking, updating the web site, coordinating pet of the week and the Wal-Mart pet boards, giving presentations to community organizations, answering phone messages and grant writing. One word is how all these tasks plus many more get done. VOLUNTEERS

Without the many hours approximately 25 people donate, there would be no shelter. Thank you to all the volunteers for making this shelter a success for the past 8 years! During the annual Spay Day Promotion 77 cats/dogs were spayed or neutered. Several area veterinarians offered discounts for the entire month of March to promote Spay Day USA. This special day was created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995. This promotion continues to be a success with a total of 424 animals being altered in the last 4 years of HMAS participation. We want to thank the Animal Medical Center, Hutchinson Pet Hospital, Crow river Veterinary Clinic, Glencoe Veterinary Clinic, Fairfax Veterinary Clinic, and Kimball Veterinary Clinic for offering discounts again this year. Please be a responsible pet owner, spay or neuter your pet. If your pet is already altered, give the gift of spaying or neutering.

Fourth Graders Adopt the HMAS Shelter

This morning Fay got all the critters ready to travel and we went to Silver Lake Elementary. The 4th grade class has "adopted" the shelter for a fundraising project. Bonnie met us there and sat with Eclipse. He was such a good boy! The kitties were all very patient with dozens of little hands reaching for them.

Fay gave the children an overview of the mission of the shelter and answered questions before "greeting the animals" began. She did a great job and everyone had fun.

Volunteer—FAY When did you start volunteering for HMAS? The year that HMAS took over the current dog building. 2001? Hated to commit myself for fear that I would fall for every cat and dog and that I would want to adopt each and every one of them. It's come close many times. Favorite part of volunteering? Fostering the mommies to be and "helping" her raise the babies. To date I have fostered over 115 cats/ kittens, and 2 puppies. Hardest part is saying goodbye after taking care of them for 2 months. Surprises in volunteering? Where some of our "residents" get

adopted to. The cities, Rhode Island, Kentucky. It shows they are going to be well taken care of if the people are willing to drive out to Hutchinson to adopt.

Cans for Critters Our aluminum can collection trailer continues to be a great source of help for the shelter. Thank you so much to all who have dropped off cans! The trailer is located outside the shelter building, and cans can be dropped off at any time.

He seems to have had some obedience training and is certainly smart—in any case he will almost always ‘sit’ on command, esp. when he knows there is a treat in your hand. When his intelligence is combined with a happy-go-lucky attitude its no wonder he has quickly

become a favorite of HMAS volunteers.

Blacky is a fun loving dog who enjoys playing and being with his people. He has

quite a bit of energy and may do best in a home with other canine friends. He sometimes takes a few minutes to warm up to strangers amongst the commotion of the shelter, but once visitors spend a few minutes telling him how handsome he is out in our play yard he warms up and starts looking for toys they can play together with.

Hi from Vinnie! I just wanted you all to know that I like my new home and people very much!! They tell me all the time what a good boy I am. They throw me balls and toys, brush my coat and take me swimming and on the pontoon. The farm is nice and big with lots of woods where I chase rabbits and squirrels (no luck so far!) We adopted Max (formerly Midnight) on December 31st of 2005, after we lost our beloved cat of 18+ years. After five months, he is very much at home. Max's favorite activ-ity is going out side for a walk or jumping at bugs in the back yard. When spring came, he was leash-trained in a week, learning very quickly that was a requirement for going outside. His second favorite activity is playing "cat dancer" with one of those long, feathered cat teaser toys. He carries it all around the house, upstairs and down, and drops it at your feet expectantly when it's time to play. Max is an entertaining addition to our home, and we are very happy to have him. We just wanted to send a HUGE "THANK YOU" for allowing us to adopt Miya into our family. She has been an absolute joy and a bit of a stinker but we never thought we would love her so much

and so quickly!!! She is a quick learner and gets better every day at potty training; last night was her first night at puppy school!! Greetings! Ben (Lavi) and Monty (Harley) We love them! Ben has a big boy purr, and is the most affectionate little snuggly man. Monty can't sit still to save his life, climbs everything and stands IN his dish when he eats! They are adorable, and so fun to watch! They sleep all curled up around one another (when they sleep, which doesn't appear to be too much!) They are good boys about their litter boxes and keeping clean. They come when we call them, and promptly head downstairs each night for bed. The whole family wears "scratches of honor," but neither shows anything but playfulness and youthfulness. Our one year old thinks these are the greatest toys ever. And Monty is dominant at the food/water dish, as I have seen Ben patiently waiting for Monty to move before he gets some (course it would help if Monty would get out of the dish!!) Hello Everyone, I just wanted to share a brief up-date with you regarding the dog I adopted from your shelter in November 2005. The puppy was a 4-month old shetland sheep dog/yellow labrador retriever mix. The name on her adoption papers was Pandora, but I believe she was also called Ally. Now she answers to Milli. Today was her first birthday! She is such a

wonderful dog. She adores my other dog Haley, and in fact prefers Haley over me. Milli loves to tease Haley by taking away each and every toy with which Haley is playing. HMAS partners with the Doris Day Animal Foundation

to promote Spay Day USA for the Fifth year in a row!!!

Spay Day USA is a national campaign to promote the life saving benefits of spaying & neutering of companion animals. The official date of this promotion is February 22nd. The Spay Day Program supports 3 main goals: Raise the public’s awareness of companion animal

overpopulation Promote spay & neuter surgery as a primary way to

prevent overpopulation Inspire people to take personal responsibility for

preventing the births of unwanted litters In support of this program area veterinarians are offering discounts on spay and neuter fees for cats and dogs during THE ENTIRE month of March. More than 1 million cats, dogs and other companion animals have been spayed or neutered since 1995, thanks to Spay Day USA participants. Spay Day has helped save millions of animals lives and tax payers dollars. Consider giving a gift of spaying or neutering!

Coupons may be picked up at the shelter during open hours.

9th Annual Paws On Parade Pet Walk

Saturday, May 19 at the HMAS Dog Building Our volunteers are hard at work planning our largest annual

fundraiser, Paws On Parade. As always, there will be food, fun contests, entertainment, and bigger and better prizes for our top

pledge earners. We are continuing our team division! Teams can be any type of

group with two or more people. Challenge another business, a rival sports team, or your neighbor’s family! The winning team will

receive a trophy. We’re hoping for our largest turnout ever-plan to attend and take part in the fun. We know that some of you are

anxious to start collecting pledges so you have the best chance at our fabulous top prizes. Feel free to use the Early Bird Pledge Form in

the insert page of this newsletter and last years Paws on Parade.

November 17 & 18 “Dog show duty” is one of our volunteers’ favorite events, but we always need much more help. Find out how to have a fun day at one of these dog shows while earning cash for HMAS! Call Barb Otte at 587-5215 for more information. Fall Rummage, Bake and Book Sale September 7th and 8th at the Hutchinson Fairgrounds. We are already collecting merchandise to be sold at our huge annual sale, and will continue to do so throughout the summer. When you have items ready for us, please call Roberta Yates at 587-7652 or Jody Wendorff at 234-7375.

Enter Our Photo Contest! There will be two categories: Portrait and Humorous. First and second place winners will be awarded in each category. To enter, send your photo and a $5 entry fee to the shelter. You’re welcome to drop them off during open hours, too. You may enter as many photos as you’d like, but please include a $5 entry fee for each. Label the back of your photo with your name, address and telephone number, as well as the name(s) of the animals pictured. Also let us know which category you would like us to judge each photo in. All of the photos will be judged, displayed and the prizes awards at the 2007 Paws On Parade event at the shelter on Saturday, May 19th. Photos must be submitted by Saturday, May 15th and cannot be returned. See insert for last year’s winners.
