Anzac Day 2018

At a special Anzac Day assembly today, staff and students heard the story of the final year of WWI and the remarkable victories secured by Australian troops. Delivered by our school leaders, the assembly focused on four BGS Old Boys, Phillip Swain, Reginald Avery, George McWade and Arthur Leslie, who gave their lives in 1918. Our School Captain also told us of the impact of this on the families left to rebuild their lives.

Both Phillip Swain and Reginald Avery fought and died in April 1918 near Villers-Bretonneux in the famous defence of Amiens. George McWade and Arthur Leslie were killed in the great push toward the Hindenburg Line in August and September. Swaine, Leslie and Avery had already lost brothers in the war and McWade had seven cousins in action.

The story of Old Boy Philip Swain was typical of the inspiring and challenging messages. Swaine was only 20 years old when he signed up. Before his 21st birthday he had won the Military Medal when he entered a dugout in the midst of bursting shells to assist a fellow soldier to safety. In 1918 he became part of the famous defence of Amiens. Swaine’s actions were selfless. They can inspire us to think of others first and challenge us to overcome our fears.

Our school leaders spoke of how difficult it is to understand the magnitude of war and what took place between 1914 and 1918. Anzac Day is our opportunity to reflect and be grateful for our freedom, our friendships, our loved ones and our opportunities.

By the end of 1918 close to 60,000 Australians had fallen in Gallipoli, Belgium, France and the Middle East. Their sacrifice can provide many lessons.

In his closing remarks the Headmaster quoted the former Prime Minister, John Howard, who reminded us at the Gallipoli Dawn Service in 2000 that our inheritance from those soldiers is not a fallen sword or a warrior’s code. It is, rather, a heritage of personal courage and initiative. It is a determination to do what is right, regardless of the resistance we meet or the fears we hold. That is the message we can learn from their sacrifice. Their memory is ours to guard and their legacy becomes our challenge.

Thanks to all the staff and students who played a part in the Anzac Day assembly today, including our school leaders for sharing the Old Boy stories, bugler Josh Leung, wreath layers from each year level and the Grammar Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Choir for their stirring recital of the hymn and our national anthem.

Parent Information Evenings

Thank you to the incredible number of parents who attended the wellbeing series presentation by cyber safety expert Brett Lee this week.

Brett spent the day speaking to students in various year levels prior to the parent presentation. He is an excellent presenter and varies his sessions to match the different adolescent development stages. He also ensures boys receive important key messages each year. Brett has been presenting on cyber safety to our students for many years and this is supported by the work by Form Tutors in the Student Wellbeing Curriculum. His efforts and that of our staff have made a difference to the way boys manage technology.

As I have mentioned in the past, the wellbeing series presentations are aimed at assisting parents understand specific issues relevant to their son’s adolescent journey. The School has invested in School TV as a resource for parents. If you have not looked at this I encourage you to do so this week. Along with this online resource, we also have parent presentations on the topics of gaming, alcohol, drugs and sleep throughout the year.

I am currently working with a team of staff on the issue of explicit sexual imagery and I plan to facilitate a parent evening on this later in the year. I would like to grow the number of presentations available to parents and would appreciate feedback from you as to what topics you would appreciate being covered. Some topics may be relevant to all years but others may be more relevant to specific age groups.

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] with your suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you regarding this important matter.

School Uniforms

A reminder that I need parent support to ensure students wear their winter uniform to school from Tuesday 8 May. I also ask parents to ensure their son is dressed in school uniform if he intends to support the First XI football team on Saturdays. The boys should also sit together during this time. Thank you for your support in these matters so far this term.

Director of Boarding

Berian Williams-Jones

On Monday this week, all boarders attended a cyber safety address by Brett Lee. As Mr Carroll mentioned, he provided advice regarding technology that now surrounds our daily lives, specifically how to be safe navigating the internet. I was fortunate to be able to share a meal with Brett on two occasions over the course of his visit and I much appreciated the insight and reflection he offered, as we work to provide a suitable environment in which boys can grow and flourish.

His direct feedback was that we have been wise to instigate a process of collecting mobile devices. He recognised that this would not have been a popular move with some boarders but suggested we have little choice given that most inappropriate use happens either at night or indeed over the course of the weekend. He also pointed out that technology comes in many shapes and forms: collecting phones or an iPad is one thing, but how will we manage other devices such as cellular based watches will possibly be more challenging.

Collecting devices is just one part of our wellbeing approach. We also seek to manage the pre-bedtime routine and provide boys with ample time to prepare for sleep, particularly if they have had a day of heavy screen use. The challenge will likely only increase in the coming years, but I look forward to working with all boarding parents as we seek to provide the best possible environment for the young men of Harlin House.

8E has started their Outdoor Education Program at Lake Moogerah. The class turned up on day 1 of the term full of energy and excitement for the experience. The focus of the Year 8 program is teamwork and the class was willing to take on this theme throughout the expedition, activities and challenges.

Year 12 Form Seniors Julian Correia, Tom Greening and Harvey Nihill did a wonderful job of leading this program. These seniors stood out as capable and considerate leaders who showed initiative and genuine concern for the needs of the Year 8 students. Both the outdoor education teachers and support staff have been impressed by the efforts of the seniors this week.

James Horton stepped up into a leadership role during the group initiative tasks. He managed to direct and coordinate his group to find a solution to the teamwork tasks. Subha Elango Vennila put in a great effort throughout the program and his class recognised and celebrated his willingness to push on.

Senya Konovalenko was a great help to his peers while canoeing on the expedition. He helped his friends learn the new paddling skills and supported them on the journey. Benjy Kerrigan joined the class for his first experience at Moogerah and did a wonderful job of settling in. He was willing and capable when taking on the challenges and had a positive attitude all week.

Angus Bisset, Angus Reinhold and George Sayer were mature, polite and helpful all week. These boys were engaged in the experience, showed a willingness to help others and learn about the outdoors. Nick Michael pushed himself on the rock climbing tower and Hugh Mowbray was a great contributor to the group initiative activities.

Mr Simon Conway, Ms Mel Everleigh and Ms Anna Sanderson joined the class this week to see the boys in action. The class had great support from their teachers and were able to share the experience with them.

Thought for the day – “Creditors have better memories than debtors.”

Benjamin Franklin

The busyness of term 2 is well and truly upon us with hundreds of boys involved in extracurricular pursuits, some of them in multiple capacities. The football and tennis communities enjoyed particularly strong showings last Saturday in round one against Ipswich Grammar School. The vast majority of football matches were won with the Years 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 age groups undefeated on the day. The First XI lost a close, physical contest 1 – 2, but I am sure they learned much from the experience. Our tennis teams were undefeated across the board with a young First IV registering an emphatic 8 – 0 victory. I wish both communities well for tomorrow, in what has become a traditionally tough round against Brisbane Boys’ College.

Our gymnasts continue to train and prepare well for this term’s GPS championship which will once more be hosted here at the School. Congratulations to Kristian Russell, Brooklyn Brougham, Luke Graham, Fletcher Griffiths, Alistair Hoole, Zac Simpson-Wylde and Oliver Waterhouse on their selection in the Queensland gymnastics team. The boys will compete in the Australian championship in late May.

The cross country squad travelled to Southport last Friday for an event that provides a little more novelty with competitors running on the beach. Good numbers and good performances defined the squad’s effort, as I am sure will be the case when they compete in today’s Gregory Terrace hosted event.

An excellent start to the Brisbane interschools fencing championship saw BGS teams compete strongly. I refer you to MiC Mr Glastonbury’s commentary later in this newsletter.

Our musicians continue to be extremely busy and last night’s strings and chamber orchestra concert was the first of the term’s significant musical events. I also commend next week’s bands and percussion concert to you.IN THIS SECTION

‘The Boy We Lost at Sea’ by Daniel Evans

This year we have been fortunate to have a range of professionals and volunteers assist us with our prop and costume procurement for The Boy We Lost At Sea. We commend BGS mother Julie Skerman for her efficiency in taking on a great deal of the research and sourcing a range of props and costumes. Ranging from grungy teenagers in the 90s, poverty stricken immigrants in the 40s and Australian soldiers in WWI, there have been many challenges when sourcing authentic and believable costumes. A regular collaborator with the BGS Drama department, costume designer Jenny Stuart has hand-crafted several of the more demanding numbers.

Now that we are working with the set, costumes, props and technical elements, this show is really starting to come to life as our extraordinary characters continue to take shape. With just under four weeks remaining until our show opens, we are starting to polish and refine the smaller details. There is a definite buzz of excitement starting to build within the cast and broader school community. If you haven’t already purchased tickets to The Boy We Lost At Sea get in quickly.

A show not to be missed!

• Tickets are available now from the Extracurricular office

• Performances: BGS Theatre at 7.00pm on May 22, 24, 25 (note the Friday show is sold out)

FootballBGS football teams opened their season with a strong round of results against Ipswich Grammar School last week. Of the 22 GPS games contested, the school won 18, drew 1 and lost 3. The younger students can take heart from their first performance for the School. In particular, well done to our Year 5 teams who were undefeated for the day. Our Years 7, 9 and 10 teams had a good day also finishing undefeated at Northgate. Standout performances came from our 5A, 7A and 9B teams who played exceptional football and made wonderful starts to their respective seasons. Special mention must go to Alex Peters in the 6B team who scored seven goals!

All players represented the School well and all teams on the day laid a foundation to build their season on. This week the School travels to Brisbane Boys’ College at Toowong for another tough round. I would ask that all players give

themselves ample time to arrive at BBC as parking will be extremely congested throughout the day. Please check game times and venues carefully as a number of different venues will be in operation.

In addition to their main campus, BBC will use Toowong College and Coleridge St Fields at St Lucia. There are two supplementary fixtures which will take place at Churchie and Nudgee respectively. All players and parents must check MyGrammar carefully for fields and times. The 9F, 9G, 8F and 8G teams will not be playing this weekend but will be in action for all remaining weeks of the season.

Best of luck to all teams this weekend.

FencingLast Saturday saw the first round of the Brisbane School Teams Championship at Yeronga. The day proceeded very well with 41 teams taking to the piste. Overall BGS won 21 matches and lost 18. This is a very good result given that there are a number of schools who train from the beginning of the year.

The First IV foil team of Thomas Kwan, Sebastian Vu, Hugo Brown and Joseph Lim defeated the Brisbane State High First team by eight bouts to one. In the sabre section, the First IV team of Ian Wong, Jackson Xu, Hans-William Chung and Bryn Gibbons won their match six bouts to

three. In the epee section, the First IV team of Captain of Fencing Wylie Raymond, Jonathan Patchen, Nick Rowan and Charles Oliver defeated the Cavendish Road State High School team seven bouts to two.

The Second IV group of teams were almost as successful. The Second IV foil, epee and sabre teams all defeated their Brisbane Girls Grammar School counterparts in three close matches, which ended with the same score of five bouts to four.

TennisGPS Round 1

BGS tennis had a wonderful start to the 2018 GPS season against Ipswich Grammar School. All 19 of our teams competing against IGS came away with a win! We were pleased to see competitive spirit, good sportsmanship and smiles all round. It was also great to see boys playing internal matches, including many players who put on their BGS tennis shirt for the first time. Well done for bringing plenty of morning tea and special thanks to the parents who helped in the kitchen and on the barbecue on the weekend.

We have our toughest opponent in the competition coming up in round 2. Brisbane Boys’ College always bring out our best tennis, so we are excited to see our boy’s hard work pay off.

First IV

After all the coaching, training, camps, super league and tournaments, it was finally time to start our season against Ipswich Grammar School. The Firsts for the opening round were Will Jesser, Angus Gentner, Elliott James and James Kenny. The day began with the boys in blue winning all four singles matches. This good form continued with four doubles wins to give BGS an 8-0 overall victory. A commendable effort as three of the boys were playing for the first time in the open division.

Super League

Some boys have been asking about playing more fixtures tennis. If you are interested in playing more matches please email Mr Harry Lee at [email protected].

Our Middle School community came together today to commemorate Anzac Day in a moving ceremony reflecting on the lives of four BGS Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The ceremony provided the opportunity to reflect on the value of community and the importance of mateship. Students were encouraged to reflect on the story of Old Boy Philip Swain who entered a dug out amid bursting shells to assist a fellow soldier to safety; to think of others before themselves; be selfless rather than selfish; and to show empathy rather than apathy. I wish to thank Mr Chris Price, our School Historian for organising the assembly as well as our School leaders, Marcus, Harvey and Hugh for conducting the ceremony. We are also grateful to Mr Peter Ingram, the Music department staff and musicians who performed at today’s service.

Next week is book week in the Middle School and a number of special events have been organised by our library staff. Tickets are still available for the Years 5 and 6 book week breakfast on Thursday 3 May and I encourage you to purchase tickets today if you are considering attending. The breakfast is always an enjoyable event where the boys celebrate their love of reading and this year hear from children’s author, Tim Harris.

Our Years 7 and 8 boys and parents have the opportunity to attend an evening with Lance Balchin on Wednesday 2 May at 6.00pm in The Lilley Centre forum. We are very proud of positive reading culture within our Middle School community and we are very fortunate to welcome both Tim and Lance to BGS next week. Information regarding both events can be found on the flyers attached to this newsletter and bookings can be made through MyGrammar. Contact Ms Vicki Palmer if you have any questions.

Academic support clubs are now underway for term 2 and an updated schedule can be found on each year level page on MyGrammar. Students who are seeking additional support in either literacy or numeracy are strongly encouraged to attend.

Last night we welcomed our Year 8 boarding parents with a special reception prior to the parent teacher interviews. We acknowledge the long distances travelled by many to attend this special occasion. The Year 8 parent teacher evening was the final round of formal interviews for Middle School parents this semester; however, parents are encouraged to contact teachers or Heads of Year if any concerns arise throughout the remainder of the term.

Cross Country

Getting our runners to The Southport School cross country meet has always been a challenge and last Friday’s meet at the Spit was no exception. Transport challenges aside, the boys thoroughly enjoyed the novel experience of competing on the sand. This week we are competing at Victoria Park which is a home ground advantage for our boys and the runners from Gregory Terrace. Our boys are very familiar with every part of this course where they do much of their training and we look forward to seeing some strong performances ahead of the City District cross country championship at Northgate next week.
