NEWSLETTER Summer Edition 2019

I am compiling this newsletter following a week of celebrations at The Telford Park School. On Thursday 4th July we held our annual awards evening which saw successes across all subject areas rewarded. The final award was for overall student of the year, well done to Elizabeth Jasper.

On Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th July we held our Year 6 transition days, our new students demonstrated a very positive attitude and were a pleasure to have in the building. It already feels like they are part of the school.

Our Performing Arts Summer Showcase was held on Thursday 11th July. We saw students showcasing musical drama talents in abundance. Many performances were extremely moving and the students who performed should be very proud of themselves.

On Wednesday 10th July we held our Sports Day and annual reading awards ’Oscars’ ceremony. No less than 24 school records were broken on sports day! The Oscars ceremony saw a red carpet arrival followed by a thoroughly rewarding ceremony, there was not a dry eye in the house as parents/carers, staff and students brimmed with pride.

It has been wonderful to celebrate so much student success over the last week with parents and carers. The smiles on the faces of all concerned really said it all.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff, students, parents and governors for their support and dedication this year.

Telford Park School really is a school at the heart of its community, to quote a colleague a ’small school with a huge heart’.

I wish you all a happy, relaxing and safe Summer holiday. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday 3rd September at 8.25am. If you son/daughter is moving to the new ‘Orion’ House we look forward to welcoming them back in their new green ties.

Uniform Request

If you are buying new uniform for your children over the holidays, please could you donate any old or spare blazers or ties to the school so we can reuse them for students who may need a spare. Any students who have moved into the new house and received the new green tie, we would be grateful if you could return your old blue or red tie as well. These items can be handed into reception. The handwriting intervention team, which consists of five Teaching Assistants, provides handwriting intervention to currently twenty six pupils, during tutor time, three times a week. We have had a very busy Summer term and all of our pupils have worked really hard during the sessions. We are seeing great success which is fantastic!

Throughout this year, we have several pupils that have graduated from the intervention and we have also welcomed new pupils. We have four pupils that are due to graduate this week and we will continue to work with the remaining pupils when the new term starts in September 2019. During this term, all pupils have produced some lovely writing and some great work writing numbers . On behalf of the handwriting team, I would like say a big thank you to all of our amazing pupils for their brilliant effort and hard work! If your child does attend the intervention, I would be really grateful if you could encourage them to practice their handwriting at home. Any queries, please contact Dawn Morgan in The Link.

On the 17th July, representatives from Oxford University will be coming into Telford Park School to talk about studying at Oxbridge Universities. This is part of our ongoing links between Telford Park at University College (one of the oldest colleges at Oxford) and is a follow up to the successful trip to Oxford during the Spring Term.

In recognition of Armed Forces day which this year was on Saturday 29th June, assemblies were held for both Houses on Wednesday 26th firstly with Invictus House , and then Synergy House, both assemblies were led by Major Lloyd from the Shropshire Army Cadets, Major Lloyd informed the students about the various, and exciting activities that are available with the Army Cadet Force, it was great to see some of our cadets, Luke Morgan, Kaine Vincent, Callum Cham-bers, Joe Stewart, Jerry Lee – Jones, and Millie Gibbs all wearing their cadet uniforms.

If any students are interested in joining the Army Cadets, don’t forget it is open to both girls and boys, aged 12 – 18 years, school years 8 – 13, if anyone is interested then please speak with Mr Hylton.

Memorial Bench On Wednesday 10th July the school unveiled its memorial picnic bench in memory of ex pupil Danielle Jones. The bench was opened by Danielle’s Mum Lisa and brother Alex and was purchased for the school by ex member of staff Amy Lucas. Alex designed the bench himself, he wanted a place where people could sit and socialise as well as Danielle’s favourite colour - purple. The bench bears Danielle’s favourite quote ‘if you can dream

it you can do it’, a quote which we can all learn from.

Cultural Diversity Week 2019

Our Annual Cultural Diversity week was once again a great success!

Students and parents cooked and served up some delicious traditional food from their home countries at the start of the week. The following day everyone got to sample dishes from Belgium, France, Ghana, Poland, Saudi Arabia, India, Italy, Romania and Spain which was a real treat.

Tutor times throughout the week saw all tutor groups taking part in a quiz about different countries and cultures. The winners were Synergy 3 and Invictus 1 so well done Mr Phillips’ and Mrs Child’s tutor groups.

The end of the week saw Year 6 students from Hollinswood Primary School join us for our Cultural assembly presented by Telford Park students. The assembly was made up of presentations about family life in Ghana, poems about culture in first languages and students showing off their dance skills. Students and staff also wore traditional dress and so the school was filled with some magical colours.

The History department had the pleasure of inviting In a Holocaust survivor to talk to the Year 8 students on the 11th July 2019.

Account 1

On 11th July, year eight students at Telford Park had the opportunity to listen to a Holocaust survivor`s story. The person who came in, Mala Helfgott, had a very moving story which touched everyone`s hearts. She spoke to us about being in hiding, living in ghettos, being in a slave labour camp and finally liberated in Bergen-Belsen on the 15th of April 1945.

When Mala arrived, she started talking to us about her home town (Piotrkow Trybunalski, Poland). She then proceeded to tell us about when war broke out on September 1st 1939 and how life dramatically changed for Jewish people. She spoke to us about how it started with bombing of Polish towns. Mala told us that as time went on Nazi regime issued orders that all Jewish people were to be moved to ghettos by the 1st of November. Mala spoke to us about how overcrowded ghettos became and how there would be up to two or three families in a room. It was also mentioned that children above the age of 12 were made to wear armbands with the Star of David and had no permission to leave the ghetto at any time. At this point, Mala was not 12 years of age so did not have to do that.

After, she spoke to us about when rumours started circulating. These rumours were that the ghetto was to be reduced and the majority of inhabitants were to be rounded up, and that selections would take place and people would be deported to labour and concentration camps, and in the majority of cases to their deaths. Hearing this news, Mala`s father and uncle took it into their own hands to send mala and her cousin into hiding with a Christian family. Which her cousin found very difficult and asked to be taken back to live with family friends. She was sadly never seen again and they don’t what happened to her to this day. From this Mala went through many events but ended up surviving the holocaust and being able to share her story.

Hearing her story really touched my heart.

On Thursday 11th July 2019, Marla Helfgott, a Holocaust survivor, came in to Telford Park School to talk to us about her experience. During her talk she detailed her experience in the Holocaust. The Polish survivor gave her account of the Holocaust and how she was separated from her family, sent to ghettoes and hid from the troops under the disguise as part of a Christian family. After which she told us how she was deported to several concentration camps, in which she lived for a few years until they were liberated.

Marla coming in and talking to us can be considered as a helpful experience that assisted and developed our understanding of the events she depicted in her experience. Having a primary source come in to give their account of the holocaust as well as answer any questions we had was definitely a beneficial experience to have.

NEWSLETTER—THE OSCARS

The Oscars – July 2019

Every year we hold an Oscars themed celebration of reading success at The Telford Park School

and wow, what a ceremony we had this year.

Sponsored by Brett Bradford from Allscapes Design, TARA Recruitment and Furrows of Ford this

was the best year yet.

Our kind sponsors make this event possible and we cannot go without saying a huge thank you and

our sincere gratitude for continuing to support our student’s endeavours. Support from our community is vital.

An evening of celebration was in order given the outstanding achievements of our students to date and every award recipient had in a

variety of ways far exceeded out highly aspirational expectations.

Particular mentions must go to Elliot Biggs and Lacie Urwin. Elliot received the top award of The Accelerated Reader of the Year

Award kindly donated by TARA Recruitment. Elliot’s reading performance through Year 7 has been miraculous. He achieved Bronze

Honour Roll in 4 days! A mention must also go to Nana Aklah Ohenewaa as her accruing an outstanding 1000 Accelerated Reading

points resulted in the requirement to create a new accolade of Diamond Honour Roll.

Lacie Urwin set herself the challenge of achieving Bronze, Silver and Gold Honour Roll. Lacie’s Dad said “Lacie only put her book down

to go to the Library to get a new one”. Lacie was richly rewarded with The Honour Roll Student of the Year Award 2019 and was gifted

a chauffeur driven ride home in a brand new Ford Mustang courtesy of Ben from Furrows Ford.

NEWSLETTER—PERFORMING ARTS

Young Arts Ambassadors and T.P.A.C (Telford Park Arts Committee)

Earlier this term 6 students from Telford Park School applied to become Young Arts Ambassadors for the school and as part of this role

they participated in Young Arts Ambassador Training at Telford Priory School. The students who went were Molly Kennedy (yr 9),

Emily Murray (yr 9), Robyn Jones (yr 9), Tom Pickard (yr 8), Elizabeth Jasper (yr 8) and Sophie Flavell (yr 7).

We went there to learn more about what a Young Arts Ambassador is and what we could do in our own schools. In the morning we

introduced ourselves to the other schools and explored what our roles were. We discussed the arts that are currently available in our

schools and started to think about ways of including more activities and clubs that would interest a wider selection of students. In the

afternoon we took part in 3 physical workshops which were lead by 3 different artists who had applied to work with our schools in

developing our Arts during our Artsmark journey. At the end the students voted on which artist they would most like to work with.

This exciting opportunity is planned to begin in the Autumn term of 2019.

It was a fantastic day and all students and staff that attended thoroughly enjoyed the day and returned to school full of ideas for the

future!

These 6 Young Arts Ambassadors have also joined the students from Telford Park Arts Committee (T.P.A.C) and have now formed a

group of 14 students from years 7 – 9 who are all committed to raising the publicity and excitement for the arts in our school. T.P.A.C

have met a few times already this term and have chosen their committee name, begun to plan for next year and have already taken

on roles such as photographers, journalists, designers for the posters, tickets and programme front cover for the summer showcase.

Together with Mrs Bradburn, they will aim to build on and improve the arts in the school.

Grange Park Primary School Summer Concert (27th June) and Charltonbury (9th July)

Telford Park Rock School were invited to perform at Grange Park Primary School’s summer concert on 27th June. The Rock School

performed 2 numbers, Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes and This is Gospel by Panic! At the Disco. The evening was extremely

well attended, giving our students an opportunity, not only to perform somewhere new, but to perform to a large audience also. The

Rock School should be praised for their confident performances.

Again, Rock School have gone from strength to strength this year and were also invited to perform at the Charltonbury Music Festival

held at Charlton School in Wellington. Many primary and secondary schools from the surrounding area are invited to perform and

share their talents with others. Ur Rock School performed 3 numbers, Seven Nation Army, Zombie and This is Gospel. Our students

looked smart and conducted themselves in a very professional manner, and they performed extremely well, representing the school

in a fantastic way.

Summer Showcase (11th July)

This year’s summer concert consisted of a range of performances, from solo songs and duets, to

choir numbers, rock school pieces and drama performances. These performances show how hard

the pupils worked to give such a riveting show. The choir performed 3 numbers, A Whole New

World, Shallow and a unique acapella performance of Stand by Me accompanied only by the

amazing beat boxing of Sami Ahmed (year 9). We were also delighted that the Rock School from

Telford Langley School were able to join us and perform some of their repertoire, Hold back the

River, Another One Bites the Dust, Uptown Funk. The Year 9 performing Arts class also performed their version of Ernie’s Incredible

Illucinations, a play they have been working hard on in their Drama lessons.

Every one of these students have worked really hard to put on this performance; there were many rehearsals in preparation for the

show. All the students enjoyed performing in the summer concert and we thank you for coming to see our show.

Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations

The Year 9 Performing Arts class have worked extremely hard in order to produce this play. From the initial auditions and casting

session, throughout rehearsals, and to the final performance, this class have shown commitment, focus and a love of acting and

performing. The auditions provided Mrs Bradburn with the enviable task of casting the actors. They were all so talented, they were

extremely difficult decisions to make. The cast performed this play 3 times in total, the final performance was for 190 Grange Park

Primary School children on 15th July. After this, 8 students assisted Mrs Bradburn with a Drama workshop for Year 3 students. The

theme of the workshop was Hot, Hot, Hot, and the story revolved a summer holiday camping trip. After a few fun, noisy warm up

games, the primary school children were introduced to two Drama techniques, Still Image and Thought Tracking. They worked in small

groups, each one assisted by a Year 9 student, where they produced a series of still images and thought tracks to tell a story. All

students enjoyed the workshop and we had lots of fun!

Departmental news

This term students have focussed on developing their athletics techniques, to improve their times and distances ready

for entering the Telford Schools Athletics Championship and for Sports Day. Staff have seen fantastic commitment from

students to improve their performances. Well done all!

Football

The Year 10 football team played their Telford District Plate final V Telford Langley school

at Thomas Telford on 24th May. The boys went one nil up, but then conceded two soft

goals. However, they showed great character and resilience to score 2 goals and going on

to win 3-2. This is a fantastic achievement from a dedicated and hard working groups of

students. Well done boys! We would also like to thank Steve and Tye from Doubletouch

Coaching who have trained this squad over the past few years to get them to this point.

Shropshire County Football Squad

Over the past 2 months Preston Whinnerah has been taking part in trails for County Squad. Following the 3rd trial he has

been successful in making the squad for the 2019/20 season. This is a great achievement, well done Preston!

Telford & Wrekin School Sports Athletics Championships

On Wednesday 19th June we took nearly 50 students to Oakengates to compete against all the Telford School in

athletics. The students represented the School fantastically and achieved some great individual performances.

Here are a few of the highlights:

County Schools Athletics Championships

On Saturday June 9th we took 3 Telford Park students to compete in the Shropshire County

School Athletics Championships held at Oakengates Athletics Stadium. Frank Amanfo took

part in the Javelin and came a very impressive 2nd. Preston Whinnerah took part in the high

jump, coming 4th place, jumping 1.35m. Both great achievements, well done!

From this event Frank qualified for the Mason Trophy at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium

on 15th June. This is the best of English Schools athletes, who compete over the day to

qualify for the English Schools Athletics Team. Unfortunately, Frank didn’t throw near his

personal best but came a very respectable 15th. Well done Frank!

We then took Preston (8), Emmanuel Osei (7) and Gideon Frimpong (7) to the County Year 7 & 8 championships at the

London Road Athletics track in Shrewsbury on the 22nd June. Preston had a great day, jumping a PB of 1.5m in the high

jump and then coming an impressive 3rd in the 200m. Gideon and Emmanuel both took part in the long jump, coming in

the top 10. They then both made the 100m final but were unfortunate not to come in the medals.
