CALENDAR

Welcome to Term 2, 2019. This term we have been celebrating

student achievement in our new school.

Congratulations to all students who have participated and have been

successful in a range of sports activities which include cross country,

state badminton and table tennis competitions. The Canberra

excursion was very successful with student accounts of their trip

reflecting their excitement at visiting a sheep farm, debating in Old

Parliament House and participating in the science challenges at

Questacon. For some it was their first experience of going on an

overnight excursion with fellow students, sleeping in a dormitory and

eating food that had not been cooked by their Mum!

We are also celebrating the ongoing success of students studying and

achieving as we explore new ways of learning in our new purpose-

built high school and developing new partnerships within our local

community. Our Learning Now For The Future students have been

posing questions and creating responses around the themes of

Identity, Imagination and Cyber Safety. We are looking forward to

celebrating their learning through their multi-modal presentations to

parents and teachers at the end of this term.

SRC STORIES

Our Stage 4, 5 and 6 SRC students work together to

demonstrate leadership qualities by assisting other

students, representing our school in the community

and hosting our assemblies every term. Here are some

of their stories.

Page 4: Newsletter Term 2, 2019 - centralsydneyie-h.schools.nsw.gov.au · 7g/;ï# W1 WW8/;ñ## M y n a m e i s D u l g u u n B a t j a r g a l . I ’ m 1 6 b u t I w i l l s o o n t u r

Stage 4 Foundation students have been incorporating

science and food technology into their English

learning.

As part of their project, they have planted some herbs

and vegetables, including rosemary, thyme, parsley,

shallots, cauliflower, carrots, radish, spinach, snow

peas and kale in our sustainable gardens.

The Stage 4 students will be using some of the herbs

to cook this term, developing their English skills by

experiencing the process of growing the food, cooking

and tasting it.

Congratulations to our

Badminton champion

Josie!

Josie scored 1st in the

Under 19 girls singles

and doubles matches of

the NSW Junior Open.

She also scored 2nd in

the U19 girls mixed

doubles.

SRC BADGES

Our new Representative Council

with their badges at our

assembly in week 3.

Stages 4, 5 and 6 SRC students

are our school leaders and they

work together to make our

school a great place to learn.

Congratulations!

STAGE 4 INTERMEDIATE

STAGE 6 BUSINESS STUDIES

Our Stage 6 Business Studies class

and their teacher Ms Takans had a

wonderful experience in week 3

this term.

They visited CoffeeCreative for a 2-

hour exploration of small business

ownership in our local area.

They were shown how to make

various coffees and learnt how

much effort and hard work goes

into building a sole trader business.

Congratulations to our students

and a big thank you to Ashley.

4I English studied the narrative text type in Term 1.

By studying the way stories are created and

developed, the students had the opportunity to

practice different aspects of language learning

through a fun, relevant topic. The students main

focus was the past tense and they studied this

through reading and writing stories, practising

their speaking and listening skills by recounting

stories they knew and working together to create

and scenes of new stories.

This unit of work finished with project based

learning where the students worked alone or in

pairs to write a children's picture book using

Power Point. The narratives were written and

edited by the students who also designed all the

graphics to accompany their work. This, in itself,

was a challenging and rewarding task. However,

project based learning is about creating authentic

experiences, and the students had the added

excitement of knowing that their completed

stories were going to be published and taken to

the our neighbouring Wunanbiri Preschool.

On the 10th April, 4I visited the preschool. The

students sat with small groups of pre-schoolers

and read them their books. It was a great

opportunity to gain confidence in reading out

loud and to meet local children. Our students

were really pleased with the way the pre-school

students responded and clapped at the end. We

then presented copies of the books to the

preschool, so that the students could reread

them.

The pre-school's coordinator Sandra has given

Central Sydney Intensive English High School an

open invitation to return for more storytelling in

the future. This interaction with the community is

a great way for us to learn English!

MUSIC  VISUAL ARTS

Students have been very busy in art this term. Stage 6

photography elective students have displayed some of their

amazing work in our school foyer. Bank Yantaraka from 6T took

the photos below.

Students have been enjoying our new music

room. Lunchtime practices see students

learning guitar, piano, drums and engaging

with our new technology to mix music

samples and experiment with sound.

Students in our Gifted and Talented

program are busy rehearsing for their end of

term performances and we can't wait to see

them!

MATHS

THE SECRET ROOMS OF CSIEHS

Last term in Maths, the 4T students learnt about ratios and the applications of ratios such as Scale Drawings (eg: maps and

house plans).  Together with PDHPE, they created scale drawings of plans that could be used for playing sports on a court.

They also investigated possible new places in our school, drew scale drawings of these rooms and wrote an explanation on

how to get to their secret room. Below is an example of their work

4T presented their work to the class.

Jean-Luc Ramirez Contreras from 5TT has a gift for sculpting. He

participated in the lunch time art program and when he

graduated at the end of term 1, presented a wonderful kangaroo

sculpture that he made for our school.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our 2019 cross country day was a huge

success. Congratulations to all students

who ran the distance and to everyone who

had a go. Some students who completed

the race with a competitive time had the

opportunity to represent our school at the

zone cross country carnival at Centennial

Park.

In Technology, the 4T students learned

about The design process which they

used to design a school magazine.

The students became journalists,

photographers and editors, and

interviewed students and teachers

around the school.

Below is the front page of the

magazine and to the left is the Term 1

presentation day where we launched

the magazine. Well done 4T!

SPORT

TABLE TENNIS

TOURNAMENT

Six of our students represented our school

in the 2019 Sydney East Table Tennis

Knockout on the 24th May. The all-day

competition took place at the Indoor Sport

Centre in Homebush.

Sang Tran 6T, Mario Shaaya 6P, Zishu Liu

6II, Haichun Shang 6I, Andy Cho 4F

attended.

Michael Cai from 4TT played many singles

and doubles matches against students

from various public high schools. Our

school team was narrowly defeated by

Sydney Technical High School and they

went on to play Sydney Boys in the finals.

CAREERS EXPO

Stage 5 and 6 students

visited the careers expo

to explore  many

different learning and

career pathways. It was

very insightful and

helpful to see the

different options

available to us in the

future.

In week 5 we went to Canberra, the capital city of

Australia. We learnt a lot about Australian culture

and the government system. It took about 3

hours to get there by bus. We visited a sheep

farm, The Museum of Australia, Questacon,

Parliament House and the War Memorial. We

were very tired at the end but it was a great trip!

GRA D UA T I O N

In term 4, we celebrated the achievements of 36 students who have

worked hard in building for their future in Australia and successfully
