He spoke with passion and hope of a time when the civil rights of African Americans would be respected. Ascension also reminds me of Archbishop Oscar Romero’s speech given moments before his assassination, where he reminded the oppressive government and military of their obligations towards the poor of El Salvador. These are not just dreams but things that each had, along with many other people, struggled to concretise in their lives. Five years earlier, King articulated his vision that his children would enjoy the same rights as other American children where all would ‘be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together’. (August 28, 1963) These were not just dreams. MacKillop, King and Romero had stepped down from the mountain and spoke out, protested, marched in the streets, challenged the system, critiqued prevailing attitudes and stood alongside others who needed to be encouraged… Web: www.acceptabletime.com.au Looking over the past term, we saw many examples of parents, students and teachers working together to achieve our mission of developing and growing people to be the best they can be; what Christ created them to be. Maybe not so triumphant or courageous as those mentioned above, but the spirit of our patron Mary MacKillop was certainly present through our everyday activities over the past term. Activities such as: Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews; the Rugby League Trip to Katherine; the Rob Galea Concert; the Student Representative Council Community Service Activities; the preparations for the CaSPA Conference; the preparations for the Year 11 Camp and the senior Dance Trip to Brisbane; The signing up of students into School Based Apprenticeships; the untiring efforts of teachers as they prepare students for the end of Semester testing program, and the list goes on. Christ calls us to take on the work that the Father has given him to do and which he now entrusts to us: the work of compassion; of justice; of reconciliation; and, of peace. May we be God’s messengers of hope by the way we live the Gospel. May we continue to make Christ visible to the people of our time and place, and, may God’s Spirit of wisdom be with us as we go and serve the people around us. “May your journey always be filled with blessings, and may the life of Saint Mary MacKillop ignite in you the flames of faith and service”

Dear Members of MacKillop Catholic College Community, The feast of the Ascension reminds us of our patron Saint Mary MacKillop and her work and our mission of discipleship; calling us to service and outreach. She was often heard saying: “Never see a need without trying to do something about it”. ...St Mary MacKillop.

Through this feast we also recall Martin Luther King’s speech, ‘I’ve been to the Mountain Top’ – given the day before his assassination (April 3, 1968). He spoke with passion and hope of a time when the civil rights of African Americans would be respected. Mackillop Touch Rugby Team

Looking for Sponsorship

Mackillop Catholic College has two touch rugby teams playing in the in Palmerston competition. We have a men’s team playing in the open division and a mix team playing in 2nd division. Both teams are made up predominantly of students, with a teacher and the occasional parent making an appearance. The teams also play in inter-school competitions against other schools in the region.

The cost of entering and maintaining a team is quite high. Teams must pay $50 per game, that’s $100 per week over both teams, as well as an $80 registration fee per player. On top of this the team would like to purchase a set of jerseys to play in. Currently we are using the schools old Rugby jerseys and students would like to have their own touch specific ones.

We are looking for small businesses to provide sponsorship towards jerseys and to substitute team game fees. We would provide advertising on the jerseys, which would be used for the next 2 - 4 years by the school. Your business would be getting long term exposure both in Palmerston and the greater Darwin region as well as helping out a great cause. We have a number of talented players that could have a bright future in NT sports with your support.

MacKillop Falcons

Just wanted to share some good news. The Mackillop Falcons under 13 girls netball team won theirfirst game for the season. The girls have been working hard all season at training and playing well as a team. It was a great boost for the girls to have a win, after coming close in other games this season. They had to come from be-

hind but ended up win-ning 17- 6. Excellent team work by talking and encouraging each other on and off the court. What was also great was the amount of sup-porters who came and cheered them on! Well done everybody!

The Sports Department

is looking for sponsorship for

a range of our team sports

uniforms.

Please contact the front

office if you would like to

support us!

To celebrate the completion of a Semester of Japanese Study, Year 7 students

made sushi and vegetable pancakes and enjoyed traditional toys and games.

Next semester students can choose to continue with the language study. Not

only does learning another language improve communication skills and under-

standing of others, studies have also shown It can improve critical thinking and

problem solving skills.

Volunteers needed for Tree Day National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day are on the horizon and Planet Ark needs coordinators to help make ht event a success in their area. The organization is looking for site coordinators from councils, schools, national parks, guides, scouts, nature care organisations and faith and sporting groups., Hosting a site is a great way to get the community involved in the work of your group while doing something for the environment. Coordinators needn’t be planting professionals as Planet Ark provides ideas and assistance on the day. Schools Tree Day is 25th July and National Tree Day is 27th July. Visit www.treeday.planet.ark.org or call 1300885000 for more information
