PRINCIPAL’S REPORT…

Last Day of Year 12

Today marks the last day of school for all our Year 12 students. I have only known these Year 12s since they were in Year 10 but even during this short time I have seen them grow and mature into fine young men and women. I am proud of them and I am confident that they can achieve whatever they put their minds to. There is however the small matter of their VCE exams and so there is still a few weeks of hard work ahead.

Good luck to all of you with your exams and with your future endeavours!

Reporting & Assessment Review

We have spent a considerable amount of time this year reviewing our reporting and assessment practices at the College and this work is nearing completion. Next year will see all assessment tasks being put on XUNO for every class by every teacher. Parents and students will also be able to see the grades and any feedback on XUNO within a few weeks (rather than have to wait till the end of the semester).

We will also be regularly informing parents and students about progress via more regular reports. Currently we do two reports per semester, next year will see four reports per semester. We are at the stage of ironing out the finer details and once all finalised we will provide you with more details.

College Captains and House Captains

Over the last few weeks we have been electing our new College Captains and House Captains. The official announcement will be at next Tuesday’s Year 12 leaving assembly but I can say that I was very impressed by all the candidates.

A huge thankyou to Lachie, Bethany, Thomas, and Bella who have done an excellent job this year as the College Captains and Vice Captains.

New Year 7 Scholarships

Finally, we have introduced a scholarship system into the College starting next year.

The following scholarships will be available: academic scholarships, leadership scholarships, sporting scholarships, and performing arts scholarships. These are available to Year 7 students next year. Scholarships amount to $100 per year for three years.

Scholarships will be awarded after applicants attend for an interview.

If you are interested in a Year 7 scholarship then please contact the College on 5348 2367.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT & WELLBEING

Mental Health Week, October 8th – 14th 2017

In any given year 20% of the population is experiencing mental health issues, 45% in their lifetime.

Last week at Daylesford Secondary College we have been reminded about the importance of mindfulness.

Why Mindfulness….?

o Mindfulness and Positive Psychology to lessen anxiety and stress and to increase resilience. o It also builds emotional resilience so that you are better equipped to deal with the day to day

stresses of life.

It does this by building emotional intelligence and resilience, developing self-awareness, minimising symptoms of anxiety and stress and empowering self-regulation. Mindfulness encourages people to be in the present and to notice the ‘here and now’.

There are many ways that we can achieve mindfulness and it is good to find which strategies work best for us. We become better at Mindfulness the more we practice. The smiling mind app has some simple ideas that are a good place to start. http://smilingmind.com.au

Remember to ‘check in’ with your family and friends. If you are finding that you are needing further support, please visit the Wellbeing team at Daylesford Secondary College in the C Wing if at school or try the online or phone supports below.

What a Super Day! The sun is shining, the mud has dried out, there seems to be an eerie lack of flies and through the window of the wellbeing office I can see a group of students working together on the oval.

I think of that super young people skin and I want to run around put hats on them all or at least make sure that they are sitting in the shade and have their sunscreen on.

Did you know that melanoma is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Australians aged 15–29 years and that melanoma is 25.6% of all cancers in Australia?

Research shows that having more than five sunburns doubled the risk of melanoma, with risk similar for childhood exposure before 15 years of age, and exposure after 15 years of age. Having a severe sunburn in childhood more than doubled melanoma risk in people aged 18-39 years.

UV (ultraviolet) radiation causes wrinkles and skin and eye damage, which ultimately leads to skin cancer. The widget link that I have included shows you the sun protection times for your location, making it easier to be smart about your sun protection.

Drumbeat

The DRUMBEAT Program is a social development program that has been very successful in promoting teamwork, improving social skills and increasing self-confidence. DRUMBEAT is a fun program which looks at a range of issues that impact on relationships, including bullying, peer pressure, dealing with emotions and risk taking.

In Term 3 a group of Year 8 students participated in the 10 week program. The photos below show the performance at the end of the program which was enjoyed by the students and the residents at Trentham Aged Care. This term a group of Year 7 students will be participating in the DRUMBEAT Program.

ROTARY MUSIC CONCERT

The annual Rotary Music concert was held on Wednesday September 20th at the Daylesford Town Hall. It was a great opportunity to showcase the artistic talents of the various schools in the local district. Daylesford Secondary College was represented by the School Concert Band and the VCE/VET Music group.

Thanks to Rotary, all money raised goes back to the local schools that participated.

Junior Cricket Match Reports

The DSC Junior Cricket Team battled bravely during the Eureka Cricket Competition. Although the results did not go in our favour, our young cricketers gained valuable experience while displaying outstanding sportsmanship and teamwork. Nash continued on from where he left off last season with his excellent captaincy and leadership on and off the field.

We only played the one match this year - against Ballarat High School. We won the toss and elected to have a bowl. We began very well with Nash and Jordan M. opening the bowling. Nash took three scalps for the day (including one in each of his first two overs), while Jordan’s good lines and lengths contained the opposition’s opportunities to score and deserved a wicket. Tom M. bowled well to claim a scalp and also took an important catch. Although Hudson did not get a wicket, he was our most economical bowler due to his accuracy and cool temperament; the opposing batsmen just couldn’t put him away. Despite the good work by our bowlers and fielders (no dropped catches), Ballarat High School put on a formidable score of 4/149.

Our batting innings did not begin well. Our opening batsman, Harrison S. and Nash, showed excellent batting techniques during our training sessions, but were not able to carry their form through to match day (Harrison was unlucky to be run out). Although we lost early wickets, Josh gave us some real hope after classily dispatching the ball to the boundary

on a number of occasions. Following a middle order collapse of wickets, Jayden L. (not out) and Zack J. put on a very brave last wicket partnership. Our final score of 29 was not a true reflection of the talent of our batsmen. Mr Sherman

Eureka Junior Volleyball Interschool Volleyball Success: Last week four Year 7 and 8 Volleyball teams participated in the interschool sports at Daylesford Secondary College. With endless specialised training from Colin, at lunchtime and in PE classes, all teams came away with the win!

They have all progressed to the next stage in Horsham on Tuesday the 24th of October, where they will be aiming to make it through to State level. All students displayed leadership, high quality skill development and sportsmanship. We are very grateful to members of our wider school community for helping us to run the day, through umpiring and coaching. We wish all four teams the best of luck next week. Have fun and be proud of your achievement so far.

Careers News Week 2 Term 4 2017 Year 10 Students Year 10 students have just completed course counselling with Ms Olver and Mr Ackland. They now need to double check that they have selected a VCE program that keeps open a wide range of possible university courses. This can be done by downloading the (free) VTAC App - http://www.vic.gov.au/social-media/mobile-apps/vtac-coursesearch.html Students should then enter their VCE program and if there are any concerns – make an appointment with careers as soon as possible.

Year 12 VTAC Applicants We have been sending Year 12 information directly to students via email. Now is time for them to focus on exam preparation. We expect to see or speak to all those students getting an ATAR on Friday 15 December. During the week following, all universities and TAFEs will be running information sessions and having ‘hotlines’ open as students consider changing their preferences. We strongly advise students to come to see us to discuss preference options and to do this as soon as possible after they get their ATAR.
