CEO MessageDear Associates,

I am a month removed from my recent trip to Asia and the Middle East, where Morgan and I were busy working with our various Emergenetics Asia offices to conduct seminars and certify 37 new Associates, but the experience is still very fresh in my mind. This is the first time Emergenetics International has worked in the Middle East, and we are excited to have our newly certified Associates in the United Arab Emirates using Emergenetics in their work. If you have the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi or Dubai we highly encourage you to do so, as I’m sure you will find it as special as we did.

This trip also reminded me of the importance of teamwork and collaboration. By working with our Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok offices, we have developed a streamlined and effective company that is able to respond with creative solutions that match your business needs. We have, in effect, created a global WEteam that encapsulates not only diverse ways of thinking but also a broad cultural framework—all of which translates into a more complete organization.

Our management teams provide the foundation for success, but it is you, our Associates, that drive the work that we do. That’s why this trip was especially exciting for me, because it showed clearly the great strides that Emergenetics International has made in a short amount of time and the significant potential for even more growth in the near future. Of course, for me the highlight was simply meeting and talking to the new Associates that are joining our Emergenetics community.

One clear way that you are helping to drive our business is your tremendous creativity. I am consistently amazed at your ideas, and your brilliance was on full display during our Newsletter naming contest. We received over 50 dazzling name suggestions, which made picking one all the more difficult. As you can see, our office decided on Synapses, which was submitted by both Kurt Beerline and David Goldberg. Congratulations to Kurt and David, and we will profile them in upcoming newsletters.

I just want to highlight one more thing—this year’s Brain Summit. As the date gets closer, I am becoming more excited about the insights we will gain and the connections you will make. Getting a chance to see the island and the Hilton Sanya on our recent trip was exhilarating. Sanya is a gorgeous place, as you can tell from the photos I sent you recently, although pictures and descriptions cannot do it justice. You will have to see it for yourself! The Brain Summit will truly be a can’t-miss experience that will provide you with so many new experiences and opportunities, and I hope each of you will join us. Here’s to Emergenetics throughout the world.

Love,

Geil

Business UpdateDear Associates,

As you read this newsletter you will see that, on a business level, Emergenetics International is in the midst of creating new programs and investing in innovative products which will position our company for the coming months and years.

We are noticing positive indicators and feedback that point toward a recovering economy in our area and beyond, and we hope this continues. With this slight hint of optimism in the business climate, we are finding new ways to expand our business offerings, such as webinar consultations and licensing pricing structures, to match changing client needs.

On a product level, the ESP beta-testing process is progressing on an exciting level. The interest has been very positive from organizations who are working with us to ensure the assessment’s readiness for our upcoming launch.

There has also been great interest in the upcoming Brain Summit, which will highlight new training modules and more specified, interest-based sessions. Keep selling profiles and workshops as they all count toward the Brain Summit incentive race—we are closely monitoring all Associates’ profile production to see by September 1st, who will receive the top awards and get big-time discounts for the Brain Summit.

We are also happy to announce that several of our Asian associates will be attending the Emergenetics Advanced class as well as the Brain Summit! 2009 is an exciting year and promises to be even better in Q3 and Q4. I hope to see all of you at the Brain Summit.

Please email me directly with any thoughts you may have at: [email protected].

News From Emergenetics-AsiaDear Associates,

Greetings from Asia!

Since the beginning of the first quarter this year, Colin Yeow, Rosalind Hong and the team have taken a more empowered role in the operations of Emergenetics Asia. With a little handholding and a lot of good hard work from them, I am happy to congratulate them for a job well done. I can say with confidence that internal processes have improved significantly since the start of the year, and that the organisation continues to move forward with more strategic deals and projects in Asia.

Recognised for our credibility and as one of the rising learning and development companies in Singapore, a government agency (SPRING Singapore) has endorsed Emergenetics Asia with a government grant under the Technology-Innovation-Programme fund (TIP) to develop a new innovative product we have nicknamed EG-BRAIN (Emergenetics Branding and Insights Platform). This new product will be an application of our Emergenetics technology. As the project gets underway, I will continue to keep all of you informed on its development.

I am also happy to share that our Emergenetics family in Japan has grown. On May 22nd to 24th, we held our 15th Asia Certification in Tokyo, also the second certification workshop in Japan. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome our new associates to the Emergenetics family.

News From Emergenetics EuropeGreetings from London! I want to share with you some of the activities that have kept us occupied over the last few months.

Associates DayWe have just held an Associates workshop, bringing together some of the people from the first group of European Certified Associates. The objectives of this session were to:

1) Reconnect as a group, and share experiences and learnings2) Embed and enhance knowledge about Emergenetics 3) Brainstorm new ways of adding value to our clients using Emergenetics 4) Support each other on an ongoing basis

We had a very productive session, generating many new ideas, with all of us taking away lots of action points that will keep us busy for a while! One of the key points of discussion was around really listening to our clients’ needs during these difficult times, and helping them to find solutions using Emergenetics. For example, we know that many of our clients have smaller teams, following redundancies and cut-backs, with even tougher targets. We can demonstrate how Emergenetics can help pull together disparate and de-motivated groups of people who need to perform quickly in new and challenging situations.

Taster EventFollowing the success of our first Taster Session in February, we are holding another taster event on Friday 5th June in London to give potential clients and associates the opportunity to experience Emergenetics first hand themselves. In this 2-hour interactive format, participants get an understanding of the theory behind Emergenetics, an understanding of the attributes it measures, as well as their own profile results. Please recommend this event to anyone you know who is interested in finding out more about Emergenetics in Europe.

Telesales CampaignTo take advantage of those tentative green shoots of recovery in the UK, we are about to embark upon a telesales campaign, targeting companies with over 1,000 employees, offering half day and full day teambuilding workshops using Emergenetics. Who says cold calling is dead?!!

CertificationWe are excited to announce that the next European Certification Programme will be held in London on 7th – 10th October, 2009. Once again, we’re delighted that Geil will be running this programme – although she does admit that London is one of her favourite places to visit! And finally, as usual, I’d like to say thank you to our wonderful clients who are so open to learning and offer us new perspectives every day. And also to our talented and supportive group of Associates both in Europe and across the world – it’s a pleasure working with you all!

ESP UpdateHave you ever made a poor hiring decision? What were the costs? What was the affect on your team…your department…the organization as a whole?

These are big questions—with real, palpable feelings and answers associated with them. You know when someone’s a bad fit for your organization. You can tell when someone just isn’t getting the job done. In this economy there is little more important than making sure you have the right people in place to weather the storm and come out better on the other side.

With ESP, Emergenetics International is taking our vision of creating better organizations and maximizing human capital one step further. Now…we have the ability to make sure that organizations are hiring the right people. Combine that with the resources to enhance how those new hires work and understand themselves…and it is a pretty powerful model.

ESP is not out on the market yet, but it will be before the next Emergenetics newsletter is out. You are the first to know about ESP and you’ll be the first to be able to see its impact. We are scheduling it to be on the market in July, but we’re giving you a sneak preview of how it works…

ESP is all about fit—we realize that every organization is different, which is why you formulate a position based on what you need.

There are 9 Motivators directly tied to job performance that are distinctly evaluated in the ESP model. We go through each motivational attribute to make sure you understand them completely—then we facilitate a discussion where you rank each Motivator based on its importance to your specific job in your specific organization. No two organizations or jobs are exactly the same…and ESP accounts for that.

ESP is also about Aptitudes—on-the-job skills that translate into abilities in communication, problem solving and attention to detail. You rank each aptitude for your position—because only you know how important these proficiencies truly are to job performance.

It’s a format that puts the power of hiring in the hands of those who know the position and the organization best. When you give the ESP assessment to your candidates…you get beyond the resume and the interview. You cut to the heart of what motivates a person and where their skills lie. And you see exactly how they match up to what you desire.

ESP is a total hiring system. In the same way that an interview doesn’t tell you everything, neither does the ESP assessment. That’s why we combine behavioral interviewing and job analysis and competency identification with the ESP assessment.

Behavioral interviewing is making sure you are asking the right questions that lead to answers that tell you about what a candidate actually did and how he/she performed. Job analysis and competency development is utilizing all your resources to make sure you know as much about the position you are hiring for as possible. You combine that with a test that measures motivations and abilities directly tied to job performance and your chances of hiring the right person increase dramatically...

Think 10% predictive ability with a traditional interview alone…to 90% predictive ability with ESP’s total approach.

To find out more email Mark Miller at [email protected].

ESP isn’t just about assessments... it’s a total hiring system.

Emergenetics Profiles: Kelvin ReddDirector of the Center for Servant LeadershipLeadership is not an easily defined idea—it encompasses myriad qualities and skills and truly means different things to different people. One word that may not immediately spring to mind in the leadership discussion is servant. But as the Director of The Center for Servant Leadership, in Columbus, GA, Kelvin Redd sees leadership in a different light, one that is focused on a commitment to lead by understanding and respecting others.

According to Kelvin, Servant Leadership is defined as “a lifelong journey that includes the discovery of one’s own self, a desire to serve others and a commitment to lead.” It is a novel concept, but one gaining ground as more and more organizations and individuals are looking for new ideas on leadership. And that works for Kelvin, as last year alone he gave 88 workshops, seminars and speeches around the country.

“I love being in front of people, so to be able to talk about Servant Leadership, especially through the lens of Emergenetics, has been a very fulfilling and meaningful thing for me. We approach leadership by breaking it down to those core components—self discovery, desire to serve, and commitment to leadership—and facilitating a way for people to continually reinforce them.”

As self-awareness is a vital element of servant leadership, Redd underscores the importance of Emergenetics in his work. “Understanding oneself is the key in becoming a leader and Emergenetics is the foundation of that discovery process. With Emergenetics, you gain the knowledge of how you think and behave and how you approach work, and that becomes a bridge to understanding others and ultimately to becoming a stronger leader.”

In all cases though, Kelvin stresses that leadership and success is a reachable goal and one to strive for. “I always look to John Wooden (legendary UCLA basketball coach), who believes that the true measure of success comes when we simply do the best that we can do. This is a simple statement but a profound reflection on self-awareness—only when we truly understand ourselves can we know how to be the best we can be.” According to Redd, Emergenetics brings the ability to look inside ourselves and find those talents that we may or may not be using.

“I am driven by one statistic—that 87% of Americans have jobs that they don’t like. My goal is to overturn the apple cart and diminish that number. Our approach is to help people find their talents and preferences and use them to better communicate and work with others,” said Kelvin.

In using Emergenetics, Kelvin facilitates a discovery process centered on ensuring that people can see the differences in how people approach work and life, and it is one that has garnered excellent evaluations from his participants. “I separate Blue/Yellow and Green/Red thinkers and ask each group how they communicate. Of course the abstracts speak in broad concepts while the concrete thinkers need the details. This simple juxtaposition is a powerful learning tool—especially for those already in leadership positions who have always approached things in one way.”

Although grouping people by preference is a common theme in Emergenetics, Kelvin bolsters these exercises with personal stories and examples. “With Emergenetics the stories are all mine. I use my daughters and their interactions…the oldest is a Blue/Green and the youngest is a Red/Yellow…or I talk about my own preferences and how I work. When I went through Certification, I spent a lot of time on definitions, but I also looked for Geil’s personal insights. Those kind of insights are where the ‘Aha’ moments come, and this is what I try to replicate as I use personal examples on thinking and behavior.”

Kelvin uses Emergenetics in widely varied settings including executive and management coaching, traditional workshops, teambuilding sessions, and through another arm of The Center for Servant Leadership, even in marriage and family counseling and couples seminars.

And in keeping with his breakneck scheduling, he has authored a book, which is coming soon. Stand Tall – Essays on Life and Servant Leadership is a compilation of several years of work and presenting on leadership. To learn more email Kelvin at [email protected].

The Net Generation Through the Lens of Emergenetics

Book Review Grown Up Digital: How the Net Generation is

Changing Your World

For years, experts have predicted many difficulties in the imminent retirement of the Baby Boom Generation. The end of World War II signaled the return of the American family, and with it, a “boom” in babies. As that generation grew (it is the largest in American history) and grew up, it contributed massive amounts of people to the work force. A huge, educated populace, the Baby Boomers built countless corporations to the point they are today—now though…the Boomers are beginning to retire…and they are being replaced by the “Net Generation.” The nature and veracity of these stereotypes are explored in Don Tapscott’s book, Grown Up Digital: How the Net Generation is Changing Your World.

Not only is the Net Generation much smaller in population than the Baby Boom generation, there are many negative stereotypes associated with this group as they become more prevalent in the work force. They have been characterized as “greedy, self-centered, intolerant, and narcissistic,” as well as entitled and lacking in the critical thinking and concentration skills necessary to survive in the corporate world. These stereotypes are mainly derived from the idea that the Net Generation has grown up fully immersed with the influences of TV and, more importantly, the Internet shaping their world. These are very harsh descriptors, and Tapscott undertook a three year, $4 million study to examine these claims. As Grown Up Digital reports, he ultimately concludes that these stereotypes are indeed unsupportable. More importantly he impels the world to rethink the way they view this generation. Tapscott reframes the debate on the Net Generation and develops these eight norms that more accurately represent this group:

1) They desire freedom of choice and expression.2) They love to customize and personalize.3) They are scrutinizers.4) They look for corporate integrity and openness when deciding what to buy and where to work.5) They desire entertainment and fun in their work, education, and social life.6) They are the collaboration and relationship generation.7) They have a need for speed - real time information and results.8) They are innovators.

Corporations that desire to grow and succeed, Tapscott writes, need to embrace these aspects of the Net Generation and tailor their companies to appeal to these new types of workers. The Net Generation will ultimately shape and direct the most successful companies, and companies can encourage this group by designing work systems that cater to this new culture. Tapscott suggests and details different strategies on how companies can recruit, train, retain, and manage these new employees to unleash the power of Net Gen capital within an organization. As corporations look to assimilate the Net Generation into leadership positions, Emergenetics can be a powerful model to understand these workers as well as accentuate their strengths. Amazingly though, when placed in the context of Emergenetics, these eight norms create a fully formed model. What this means is that perhaps the Net Generation is not so different from Baby Boomers…what is different though is the necessity for companies to hit all aspects of work and life to propel this younger generation forward. The Internet hasn’t changed everything—successful companies need to cover all elements of thinking and behavior; workers still span the spectrum of preferences and strengths—but it has spawned a new generation and an increased focus on facilitating understanding for all types of people.

Staffing UpdatesEmergenetics International

Sharon Taylor / STEP Coordinator

STEP (Student/Teacher Emergenetics Profile)®, initially a concept born of a desire to contribute to the field of Education, has evolved to a point requiring further development in the areas of enhanced instructional materials, expanded marketing efforts and ongoing research.

“Every time I listened to stories from school administrators, classroom teachers and from our Associates about the positive impact STEP is making on student learning and development, I knew we had to begin to translate this collective wisdom into tools that support its implementation in school systems,” said Emergenetics International CEO Geil Browning. “Additionally, I’m eager to begin sharing STEP research results through a variety of avenues including publication in peer-reviewed journals.”

To support these efforts, Sharon Taylor recently joined the STEP team as STEP Coordinator, a newly-created position. She brings classroom experience, having taught sixth grade for six years, coupled with about 19 years as a professional communicator most recently with First Data Corporation.

Taylor holds a Masters degree in Communication from the University of Denver and is a member of Denver’s Influence IX (1996/97). In February 2002, she traveled to Kenya with a group led by Geil Browning in support of Kenyan Children Foundation.

What Decision Making Looks Like: Brain Activation Can Predict Strategies People Use to Make Risky Decisions

As reported in: Science Daily – May 28, 2009 (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090527121043.htm) Published in: Neuron Journal (http://www.cell.com/neuron/retrieve/pii/S0896627309002888)

Through the Emergenetics Profile we have seen countless examples of how different brain-types communicate, interact, and make decisions differently. Now, science is further bolstering that fact, with new research out that shows that different parts of the brain are activated when making decisions—and that those brain areas can be predictive in how a person may ultimately make a decision. The study, performed by researchers at the Duke University Medical Center, looked at 23 individuals’ brains in real-time, via fMRI imaging, as they evaluated complex, multi-outcome lotteries—and the results indicated that different areas of the brain were responsible for different kinds of decisions.

“Using studies like this to build a better understanding of how our brains represent our decision strategies may someday allow researchers to use someone’s personal traits…to predict the decisions that he or she will make,” said Scott Huettel, Ph.D., senior author on the study. This is an exciting study in the realm of Emergenetics as it buoys a brain-based approach to learning and understanding.

Emergenetics AdvancedAt Emergenetics International, we have found that the best way to learn is by doing, and Emergenetics Advanced is all about both—learning and doing.

This course offers the most comprehensive way to increase your knowledge about Emergenetics and translate that into new ways of approaching your work and creating impact for your clients. Led by Emergenetics’ Vice President of Training and Development, Chris Cox, Emergenetics Advanced is an information-rich two-day session formulated to boost your skills to a new level. With Emergenetics Advanced you will get:

An in-depth guidebook with new Emergenetics-centric applications and exercises• —you have the inside track on new Emergenetics learning elements with proven track records in the training room.Personal, focused attention on your specific situation• —you get input by Chris on how you can specifically use Emergenetics in any facet of your work.An open forum to discuss Emergenetics with other high-level Associates• —we believe that discussions are an incredible way to bring out the best ideas…it is a WEteam formula, where you bring ideas and insights to the table. We also make sure that all ideas are documented for your use and reference moving forward. An interactive environment where new learnings are seen in real-time• —it’s learning by doing, and we are putting you in the driver’s seat as you see new applications from the perspective of a leader and a participant.

Emergenetics Advanced was very successful in its inaugural session in 2008 and we’ve made it even better this year.

What’s more, we’ve partnered Emergenetics Advanced with this year’s Brain Summit…if you register for Emergenetics Advanced, held September 17-18 at the Emergenetics Denver offices, your entrance to the Brain Summit is FREE…it’s the best of both worlds!
