Junior Prizegiving on Tuesday was an important event - which had a huge number of parents keen to attend (our apologies to those who missed out, we will look into our for- mat in the future). It was also great that so many parents came along to meet with Kaiārahi yesterday at our Junior Next Steps - good on you for being engaged with your child’s learning, we hope you found it useful. If you were unable to attend please email the Kaiārahi to make an appointment; similarly, if you do want to meet with any subject teachers please do email them - click here for a link to teachers’ emails. The House Basketball competition concluded with the big finals on Wednesday - congratulations to Hay juniors and Mackenzie seniors on their wins, and to staff who dominated the Year 13s! (See the photo below). Senior exams are also well underway now, and it is good to hear that many students are taking them seriously and studying hard. 2019 Course and Subject selection - a reminder that this closes at 4pm next Friday 17th August. Please do take the time to support your student in this process and ensure that it is complete and submitted by next Friday. Parent Tours - are a great opportunity to come and have a look at teaching and learning in our new school. Our final tour at this stage is planned for Wednesday 22nd at 09:30, please email my PA, Karla Dawson [email protected], if you are keen to attend. Student BoT Rep - schools are run by Boards of Trustees and an important member of the BoT is the Student Rep. We are now at the time of year for the election process for the Student Rep - please see below for information and details. Breaks - as you may have heard me say or refer to, in preparing for the move to the new school we spent most of our time and energy on teaching and learning - which is going well, but there have been other aspects of the move which we aren’t so happy with and which we are now turning our attention to. This includes students’ behaviour inside, rubbish and that many students aren’t going outside (some- thing which we have also had feedback from parents on). Starting on Monday we are rolling out a new system for how we manage the school before school and during the Breaks - which will include some outside time for most students. We will roll this out to juniors on Monday and seniors after their exams; more on this next week. We’ve got a One Act Play performance in the Theatre at 7pm tonight if you’re keen to come along and see and support our talented students. This is the starting point for year 10 students to identify possible/suitable career pathway based on their interests, skills, and personality.

International Site Launched

Wakatipu High School’s new International study microsite has officially launched and is now available by clicking here. Thank you to everyone who has put so much hard work into designing and creating the new site. We look forward to welcoming more international students and sharing our wonderful school and community with them in the future.

Media Studies Visit

WHS Media Studies students must be the luckiest in the country. We have access to a thriving local film industry, stunning loca-tions and best of all, experts who are willing to share their time and experience with us.

Last week the Level 2 classes welcomed Trey Ratcliff, renowned travel photographer, to share some of his favourite photos from his stuckincustoms.com blog as well as his unique pathway into photography. Under his instruction we ventured outside for a crash course in framing and focal length.

Many thanks to Trey for sharing his ideas about creativity, what to read and what not to care about.

On that note -- if you work in the media, we’d love to have you in so students can hear about some of the many opportunities in the industry. Just email me at [email protected]

The WHS Girls 1st XI played Menzies College in the final of the Southland Schools Division 1 College League on Tuesday af-ternoon in Lumsden. The team lost heavily 6-1 in a tough game against a focused and well drilled Menzies team. This was the first year we have entered a team in this weekly competition and it is a great result to finish second. The trophy is in sight for 2019 and the team is already looking forward to it. A huge thank you to coach Jaap van der Geest and manager Tanya Glanfield for their commitment to this competition.

House Basketball Competition

The sports council ran a fantastic house basketball competition over the last week. It has been awesome to see the gym packed out each break by students supporting their houses. Junior champs are Hay house with a 21-14 win over Mackenzie. Mackenzie took out the senior competition with a tight 18-15 win over Duncan. Rankings from the house competition are below. The competition always finishes with the annual staff vs Year 13 game. This year the staff wiped the floor with a convincing 42-20 win over the Year 13’s. Both finals and the staff game can be viewed on the WHS Sports Facebook page.
