WBHS Newsleer 2016 FROM THE RECTOR Newsletter February 2016 Waitaki Boys’ High School Another year in front of our school commu- nity, hopefully a posive one. Certainly the roll reflects a liſt in confidence. We have begun with 480 students, 63 more than we have been staffed for at present. It has enabled me to adverse two new posi- ons as the 480 is pung pressure on in cer- tain subject areas. The year 9 intake is at a healthy 97, again above the expected number of 81 predicted. Thank you to those families who have conn- ued to show faith in the school. The school has seled very quickly into learning mode and our major objecve is to focus on the students and provide them with opportunies. Staff are keen to do just that and I have been impressed with the enthusiasm they are ap- proaching their teaching with. The Senior Deans were into school a week early, working with students and parents, ensuring that appropriate courses were being put in place, given results and the boys’ goals for them- selves. The Deans work has been above the call, my thanks. We have had two very good assemblies and a Powhiri to wel- come new students and staff which I enjoyed. The Hall of Mem- ories is a magnificent seng for major ceremonies and creates that feeling of awe. Friday of week one we had the Prefects’ investure, and that too, would have impressed all who took part or watched. This week finished with our academic presentaons for Merit and Excellence endorsements, another very well structured cer- emony, that I hope inspired all students to liſt their academic goals. As I have moved about the community in these first weeks I have been struck by the goodwill out there for the school. Old Boys’ in parcular want the school to succeed, and inside we know we can rely on that support as we move forward. This week I have also met with Tracy Walker at Waitaki Girls and have reaffirmed our wish to work together, so making beer use of our resources. Schools our size have pressure on the provision of a full curriculum and we are looking to see how we can help each other and our students in meeng needs. I understand the new catchphrase in educaon is “collaboraon”, a great deal of which disappeared over the tomorrows schools market driven era. If you wait long enough the world turns full circle. Ann and I have been overwhelmed by how friendly and gen- erous people have been welcoming us into your community. Thank you very much for your good wishes. “She’s a big job” but we are looking forward to working with you in the interests of the boys Kia kaha Be strong Clive Rennie Rector POWHIRI

SAFETY MESSAGE

As you may be aware, McConnell Dowell are currently constructing the expan-sion infrastructure for the North Otago Irrigation Company (NOIC). The project involves installing a total of 111km of pipe on over 90 farms across the North Otago region.

With hundreds of pipes being delivered around North Otago daily, we want to re-mind road users of the additional traffic volumes and heavy vehicle movements along State Highway 1 and rural roads throughout the region. To safely accom-modate for the additional traffic associ-ated with our works, McConnell Dowell advise parents, teachers, and students to continue to drive with care when travel-ling to and from school each day. We ask that drivers keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, take extra care to watch for cyclists and pedestrians, and allow extra time when travelling along busy construction sites.

WBHS REUNIONS NEWS LETTER V1 [AUTHOR NAME]

Waitaki Boys High School

Reunion

50 Years on

1 – 3 July 2016 With about 26 weeks to go, Colin Scobie, David Ruddenklau, & Martin Hawes have plans well underway for the 50 Years on WBHS reunion of year 1966.

Since 1966 much has happened and in 1966 the hit song was, “These Boots are made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra, Feature Film was “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” with Clint Eastwood. The NZ Prime Minister was Keith Holyoake and TV highlight was Bonanza, and the ladies fashion was to have the Mini Skirt with a fringe hair style.

So some things have changed and some have stayed the same and one event that has stay the same is the annual “Blood Match” Rugby Union game between the two local Oamaru Schools, WBHS and St Kevin’s, which is Scheduled for Saturday 2nd July 2016.

The plan is to commence on Thursday evening the 30th June 2016, with a casual get together and then on the Friday morning 1 July 2016 with school assembly in the Hall of Memories and a school tour. A formal get together will be held on Saturday Evening 2nd July after the Annual WBHS v’s St Kevin’s Rugby Union “Blood Match” game.

A FaceBook page, Web Site and email address have been set up for the old boys of the 1966 era to connect and be involved and to source further information from.

Old Boys and partners are invited and can get involved via the following email address at e:[email protected] and your favourite memory can be posted on the face book page of the same name.

The photo here is the December 2015 planning meeting where Colin and David are enjoying the left over’s from a “Little Bluey” Pizza taken at Scott’s Brewery, Oamaru while finalising plans for the reunion on 1 July, 2016. See you there.
