Engage Winter 2014 Welcome Back Dates For Your Diary Focus On The Baby Room Toddler Focus Pre-School Focus Welcome back to everyone after your Christmas holiday. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year. Could we ask you to please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes with them and suitable clothing for the weather. We do like the children to go outside everyday, and as the weather has turned cold we want to make sure the children are warm. On the 10 December we had our annual Christmas nativity, which was performed in the theatre at Catmose College. The children did a fabulous job and remembered all the songs. The costumes looked fantastic, which were provided by the parents and the lovely scenery was created by the pre-school children. We would like to thank all those parents and children who baked and donated cakes for our cake stall; we managed to raise £90 in total which we will be spending on toys and equipment for the Nursery. On the 12 December we had our annual Christmas party for all the children. It was a brilliant afternoon with lots of party games and dancing. We even had a special visit from Santa who treated everyone to a special gift. Catmose Federation, Huntsmans Drive, Oakham, LE15 6RP, 01572 770066 www.catmosecollege.com E

The children in the toddler room have also been focusing on Winter. They have created some lovely snowflakes as part of their winter display, by sponge printing white paint through doilies onto black card. The toddlers have been exploring their imaginative play in the toddler igloo, with lots of shredded paper inside. They have been exploring ice cubes and watching them melt in warm water. The toddlers have been exploring a winter vegetable sensory tray full of lots of different smells and textures. We have been talking about feeding the birds in the cold weather, so have made bird feeders to take home to hang up in our gardens.

To focus on Chinese New Year, the toddlers will be making a horse collage and dressing up in Chinese clothes. We will be able to play in our Chinese restaurant with our friends and dance along to Chinese music. Lots of Chinese food will be on offer this week for the children to sample.

The toddlers will also be focusing on transport for a week. We will be using the cars and bikes outside to print paint and make marks. We will also be walking down to the train station to spot a train! We are also lucky enough to be having a lorry, bus and a tractor visiting us during the week!

For the final week of this term, the children will be focusing on health care. The toddlers will be talking about brushing our teeth and keeping clean. We will be using tooth brushes in mint scented paint to make some interesting pictures.

The pre-school children have been very busy this term creating three lovely snowmen for their winter display. The children have been talking about snow and ice and have made their own ice lollies. The children have been kept warm by dressing up in hats, scarfs and gloves during group work. The children were also lucky enough to be warmed up with a cup of hot chocolate at snack time!

During the coming term, the pre-school children will be focusing on Chinese New Year, and will be cooking in their Chinese restaurant. The children will be sampling lots of different Chinese food and will try and eat it using chop sticks!

The children will also be looking at transport and in particular road safety. The pre-school children will be able to go for a walk and take pictures of the safety signs they might find.

When you come into the Pre-School room please take time to notice the new ‘Flower Display.’ This display is to help watch our behaviour grow. Each child has a picture of themselves on the bottom of the flower and as their behaviour grows they may move up onto a different leaf and finally to the top of the flower!
