NEWSLETTER Winter, 2014 FROM THE COMMODORE Hello to you all. For those of you that couldnt make it to the Clubs AGM (thats about 90% of you!) Im the new Commodore and its now incumbent on me to wrack my tiny brain and put digits to keys to inform and entertain you. My first task is to give huge thanks on behalf of all club members to Alan Chinn for the tremendous job that hes done as Commodore. His two year stint of commitment, jolly banter and enthusiasm has been infectious. With the exception of his singing performance at Lanes, his will be a hard act to follow. My personal thanks also go to the new Committee for volunteering (or being volunteered in some cases!) to run the Club in the best interests of its members. Were fortunate to have such depth of experience and common sense on the General and Sailing Committees but were always looking for more volunteers to help share the burden so, if you feel you want to contribute, please do get in touch with me. The AGM agreed that annual subscriptions should remain unchanged and, after some discussion, that the fine for failing to attend a duty should not be increased from £40 to £60 on the understanding that the member would still be required to fulfil their membership obligation of two duties per annum. Members raised a number of points including the tree growth on the foreshore compromising safety, the potential acquisition of a defibrillator and the misuse of Yahoo Groups messages for individual discussions. In line with Club Rules, these points will be taken to the next Committee Meeting scheduled for 10 th December for review. Were kicking off some new initiatives agreed by the previous committee including: 1) Implementation of Dutymanas an online means of choosing, swapping and allocating duties (Alan Chinn leading), see page 5 for further details. 2) Production of a new 10 Year Development Plan using input from all club members (Mervyn Clarke leading). The latter will no doubt generate new projects and perhaps a new direction for the club. My immediate focus is to clarify roles and responsibilities, get a very clear understanding of the Clubs finances and get a costed maintenance/repair schedule underway. The RNLI Open was a great success despite the very light breeze. Over £114 of entry donations was raised from 20 boats. Howard Frear deservedly took the honours in both races with Kelsey Green collecting the Endeavour Award after a long pursuit. Hearty congratulations also go to Andrew Frost for coming 3 rd overall after 5 races in the RS Tera End of Season Championships 2014 at Datchet Water over the weekend of 8 th and 9 th November. A superb result after two days in very testing conditions. Were very lucky to have such a bunch of talented racers within our ranks. The Winter series is underway and its been unusually warm so far. I appreciate that some of us hang up our wetsuits for the winter but please do think again. Im no Iron Manbut sailing in winter is definitely worth it. The weather is often surprisingly good, the wind is more consistent (even at SBSC you ask?), the camaraderie is at its height and the galley is even more inviting! Whats not to like? I hope that you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Dont forget the Boxing Day Bash, its a good opportunity to get some fresh air and to adorn yourself with tinsel or a daft hat unabashed. Not only that but Hugh Tetlow will be offering refreshments free of charge from the Galley. I hope to see you there. Andy Roxburgh

FROM THE COMMODORE

Hello to you all. For those of you that couldn’t make it to the Club’s AGM (that’s about 90% of you!) I’m the new Commodore and its now incumbent on me to wrack my tiny

brain and put digits to keys to inform and entertain you. My first task is to give huge thanks on behalf of all club members to Alan Chinn for the tremendous job that he’s done as Commodore. We’re fortunate to have such depth of experience and common sense on the General and Sailing Committees but we’re always looking for more volunteers to help share the burden so, if you feel you want to contribute, please do get in touch with me. The AGM agreed that annual subscriptions should remain unchanged and, after some discussion, that the fine for failing to attend a duty should not be increased from £40 to £60 on the understanding that the member would still be required to fulfil their membership obligation of two duties per annum. Thursday 28th August saw the last race in this year’s 21 Race Series also the last of the 3rd Mini Series. After the racing, members enjoyed Hugh Tetlow’s famous barbecue with assistance in the galley from Julia Green. Prizes for the Mini Series were awarded by Commodore Alan Chinn and thanks (plus a bottle of wine) presented to Jo Mahy who organised the racing. Unusually there were not too many ‘drifting’ races during the summer and the last two races saw strong gusty winds which were exciting for competitors and spectators alike. Full results are on the Club’s noticeboard and website. 66 members started at least one race and 14 did not have to count a DNC having raced or carried out duties for at least 14 races. Top of the Gold Fleet was Chris Jones (Laser) who also won the 21 Race Series. 2nd in the Golds was Rob Jamieson (Laser & Scorpion), crewed on occasion by Callum Small (4th in the 21 Races). In 3rd place was Adrian Neal (Solo) who was also 3rd in the 21 races.

1st in the Silver Fleet was Howard Frear (Streaker) who will next year rejoin the Gold Fleet with 2nd placed Dave Hill and Nikki Seldon (Kestrel) and 3rd placed Tony Cumberbatch (Supernova). Howard came 2nd in the 21 race series. Top of the Bronze Fleet was Kelsey Green (Laser Pico) followed by Lewis Day (RS Tera) and Peter Maxwell (Mirror). In the 21 Race Series, top Two Handed Boat was sailed by Mike Burke and Lou Hart (Kestrel), Top Cadet (Male): Andrew Frost (RS Tera Pro), Top Cadet (Female): Kelsey Green (Laser Pico). The Endeavour Prize is awarded to the lowest scoring boat that has sailed (and carried out duties) for at least 14 races and is by no means a ‘booby prize’. This year the prize goes to Mick Ayles and Marcus Patten (Comet Trio). The 2015 Thursday Evening Series starts on 9th April - 21 races, 14 to count plus 3 Mini Series of 7 races, 5 to count.

THURSDAY EVENING SERIES - 2014

THURSDAY EVENING SERIES 2014 - Second Mini Series Results The Second Mini Series finished on the 10th July with the final race of this seven race series sailed on a sunny evening with a decent breeze from the west.

Gold Fleet: 1st Chr is Jones (Laser), 2nd Adr ian Neal (Solo), 3rd Rob Jamieson (Laser).

Silver Fleet: 1st Nigel Lever idge, Pat Tolin/Wendy Jackson (Comet Tr io), 2nd Jo Mahy, Paige Gould-Jack/Emily Green (Scorpion), 3rd Neil Fraser & Gaynor (Albacore)

OFFSHORE TRAINING at SUTTON BINGHAM

Well what a year 2014 turned out to be. A record number of youngsters and adults joined our excellent training team and learned to sail or improve their skills. For the youngsters levels 1 to 4 and then more advanced to racing and seamanship and levels 1-2 for

the adults, we showed the way to success. At the Easter and Spring holidays we were joined by some youngsters from Axe Yacht Club as they don't have training facilities. They enjoyed the sailing so much they want to come back next year! Our instructors are keen sailors and their knowledge and enthusiasm shows through. All have come through our sailing courses in the past. At the moment we have eight new instructors being trained, seven have just passed the powerboat course and in January they will be attending a First Aid course. It is important that the club maintains its ‘in-house’ training for instructors and we have a number of young sailors willing to teach others the skills they have learned in a safe and fun environment.

From being an Instructor we encourage our students to train as Senior Instructors when they can then lead a team on a course. Congratulations to Andy Withers who has just passed his Senior Instructors course. Many of the youngsters come back year after year to complete the levels and become competent sailors. A number stay at the club and join in the racing, thus improving their skills. Sailing is such a great activity that it can be carried on throughout life. If you know of youngsters or adults who are thinking about sailing then please watch the website in the New Year for the upcoming training programme. Junior courses are for three days and senior courses are over two weekends. Next year we are including a new course aimed at families, something we haven't done before. So an exciting year to come!

An overcast day greeted a good turn out of members for the Annual RNLI Day Races. Principal Race Officer Rob Jamieson set a course for the morning general handicap race and with a westerly breeze, 20 boats got off to a good start beating towards the dam end of the reservoir with Chris Bottomley (Phantom) quickly taking the lead and staying in front for all three laps. Unfortunately for Chris, although finishing six minutes ahead of Howard Frear (Streaker), Howard took first place to Chris’ second on corrected time. Way back in the fleet but well up on handicap was Andrew Frost (RS Tera Pro) in third place.

The main event of the day, a Pursuit Race was run over the same course as the morning race but with the boats starting in their handicap order with Andrew Frost in his Tera starting first. Andrew had completed a lap and a half before Chris Bottomley in the fastest boat started. Andrew led for three laps before being overhauled by Howard Frear on lap four and as the seconds ticked away towards the finish time of 15.30, Andrew was also overtaken by Adrian

Neal, Mike Burke and Chris Bottomley but managed to stay ahead of the Robertsons in their Wanderer. It is of note that the boats that started first and last were within a few yards of each other at the finish, a triumph for the handicapping system! Prizes were vouchers to be spent at the RNLI’s table of calendars, cards and gifts. Full results have been placed on the noticeboards and website. Entry for the event was by generous contribution and Commodore Andy Roxburgh handed over £114.50 plus £12.32 from the collecting tin to Willie Constantine, President of the Yeovil Branch of the RNLI. Howard Frear was presented with the RNLI Shield and a separate prize from the RNLI By Mr Constantine

Thanks went to Rob Jamieson and Nigel Leveridge (Race Officers), The Smoker family for running the galley and safety boats with Steve Joyce and to all competitors for another splendid day’s racing and raising funds for the RNLI.

DUTY ROSTER ON THE INTERNET!

The Club has taken on 'DUTYMAN' for selecting and allocating your duties at the Club. ‘Dutyman’ is a web based program that allows you to log on and select you own duties. This is similar to the roster sheet we have been using at the Club but now you can do it from home or anywhere you have an internet connection. When your name is put into the system by the administrator, a welcome message will be sent to you. This message contains a link which will give you access to the system, you can then update your personal details and select your duties. Having selected a duty you will receive an email reminder 20 days and 4 days prior to the event which should prevent anyone forgetting their duty. I can allocate duties for you if you have not done so yourself. This will only happen if you fail to take advantage of selecting your own. The roster will accommodate OOD ‘A’ and ‘B’, Galley and Race Officer however, Race Officer will NOT count as a duty and members who are listed as OOD ‘A’ duty candidates will be prevented for selecting ‘B’ duties and vice versa. You may volunteer for as many duties as you wish. If you need to swop a duty it can be accommodated through the system. A full help guide can be found on the Dutyman website. I will monitor the activity on the site and if allocated duties are not confirmed I will try and make personal contact. Many clubs around the country use this system and we should all find it easy to use. I have set up the email address of: [email protected] for all communications regarding Dutyman.

Alan Chinn, Club Dutyman Administrator.

DANGER:

THE RISKS POSED TO OUR RESERVOIR BY NON-NATIVE

INVASIVE SPECIES I imagine we are all familiar with the accounts of killer shrimp in the Norfolk Broads, American crayfish killing off our native species and floating pennywort weed clogging rivers and canals. Well, the Club has just received a letter from our landlord, Wessex Water (WW), on the subject of biosecurity in its lakes and reservoirs. WW states that Quagga Mussel has been found at nine sites (including eight reservoirs) around London. This is a highly invasive non-native species, very similar to Zebra Mussel, which can significantly alter whole ecosystems by filtering out large quantities of nutrients and is also a serious biofouling risk, blocking pipes and smothering structures. There is no effective eradication method for the Quagga Mussel once established in a reservoir and the downstream river system. WW has its own plans to address the problems posed by non-native invasive species, with prevention being the most effective measure. However, it is reliant on recreational users of its waters to play their part, especially those who visit other locations and so run the risk of inadvertently contaminating their equipment and bringing unwelcome visitors back with them. WW is urging us to support its ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ campaign. A poster explaining what to do will be displayed in the clubhouse and more information can be found at: http://www.nonnativespecies.org/checkcleandry/. Obviously the main points are: check your boat and trailer/trolley for living organisms; clean and wash all equipment, footwear & clothes and make sure everything is properly dry before use. Additionally - and we hope this is so obvious as to be unnecessary to state - never put any fish, shellfish, frogs or any other form of wildlife into the reservoir, since the consequences are unpredictable. What Mother Nature wants in there, she herself will provide.

This report covers my second year as Commodore and I would like to thank the Committee and members for their support during my time in office.

The Club is blessed with a large number of members who work behind the scenes in addition to the Committee. The Sailing Committee chaired by Lou Hart has organised the sailing events for the year; Rob Jamieson and Andy Huntley are just two from this team who have shone out for their commitment to the successes of the year. Neil Fraser volunteered after last year’s AGM to take on the Duty Rosters, a challenging role and I am taking over, wish me luck! Jo Mahy has enjoyed running the very successful Thursday Evening Race Series. Mark Talbot and Chris Hutton have continued to organise the Club’s Cadets and bring on future sailing champions and trainers. Dave Hill has maintained the Club’s website and Richard Frost compiled the Sunday Race results with Pete Barnstable reviewing handicaps. Editing the newsletter, Nigel Leveridge has also organised the annual prize giving and social event and has promised to rejoin the committee after a year off. After nine years as Club Treasurer, Phil Bailey has resigned to take on another role on the Committee and I thank him for his commitment to looking after the Club’s finances. The working parties were well attended and much work completed to keep the Club’s environs tidy. Andy Roxburgh and Merv Clark found a way to repair the pontoons without the expense of lifting them out of the water as well as looking after the Club’s property. The Club should be proud of three events

this year: the first EGM gave members a chance to debate the joining together of the SB Canoe Club and ourselves. A full and comprehensive log of the combined meetings was compiled by Merv Clark who rightly deserved the award of ‘Clubman of the Year’ for his unbiased and comprehensive presentation at the meeting. The ‘Hartley and Comet Open’ saw 39 boats on the water and was considered a record for recent times until ‘Bart’s Bash’ which saw 46 boats start and all 46 finished, just showing what the Club can achieve. Special thanks to Lou Hart for being the prime mover and Race officer for this last event, spending a lot of time in forwarding the race times etc and ensuring our results were noted correctly. Many challenges await the new Committee as there is much work to be done to maintain the Clubhouse and the future development of the Club. The Duty Roster will become web based which we hope will assist in ensuring that the Club is suitably ‘manned’ when required. I thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be Commodore and I would like to personally thank Hugh Tetlow for his work over many years in maintaining the Galley, repairing and updating the plumbing and wheelchair access and, importantly, ensuring the supply of toilet rolls is kept up! All very good reasons for Hugh to be nominated and accepted as an Honorary Life Member. Finally, may I say that I have tried during the past two years to maintain the smooth running of the Club with my one disappointment being the incidence of unauthorised removal of parts and equipment from boats around the boat park which will continue to challenge the Committee in reducing these frustrating and annoying episodes. NEW EQUIPMENT TO CLEAN THE PONTOONS AND FORESHORE

Marcus is holding a long handled wire brush which can be used to break up the slippery green algae and stubborn bird poo on the pontoons. This is another helpful tool from the workshop of Hugh Tetlow. Also, to help clean the pontoons, the Club has bought a Karcher Patio Washer which

will fit onto one of the Karcher High Pressure Pumps that can be found in the Secure Store.

The postponed Wanderer Nationals 2014 Event were combined with the Inland Championships held at Bewl Valley Sailing Club near Lamberhurst in Kent over the weekend of the 4th/5th October, after the original National event at Whitstable had to be abandoned due to lack of wind. 13 boats gathered at Bewl Valley Sailing Club on Saturday morning with a forecast of brisk winds and showers for Saturday and lighter airs with sunshine on the Sunday. Two races were run on the Saturday in gusty conditions with Tim and Niamh scoring 5 points with a 4th and a 1st. Sunday promised to be sunny with less wind which turned out to be no wind and so the day’s races were abandoned. This left the Race Officer with a problem as another boat had scored 5 points (3rd and 2nd) but, on count back, the result went to the Robertsons.

The final results of Bart’s bash are now available on the internet. 30,717 sailors took

part from 60 countries with 46 boats competing from Sutton Bingham. Probably because we raced on a small pond in light winds and got in each others’ wind our overall results were not as good as we had expected - but what a splendid day it was! Our top sailor, Ian Jay in a Phantom came 6,460th. Our novice racers Bob Tett and Phil Godfrey, both in Wanderers, came 127th and 128th respectively out of 511 First Timers. Our only ‘Rookie’, Ash Carrington in a Comet Trio was 448th out of 1,378 Rookies. Our Club’s results are now posted on the Racing noticeboard. Perhaps our greatest achievement is that out of 460 clubs that have sent in money raised for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, we came 35th having donated £1,366.30. The organisers of the event are planning to run the second Bart’s Bash on the 20th October, 2015 and those of you who registered for the first Bash are being asked to complete a questionnaire on your thoughts of how the event went and changes for the next one.

Late July saw ‘Red October’, Mike Burke and Lou Hart heading northwards up the M6 towards the banks of the Tay for a long weekend of competition with 23 Kestrels taking part in the UK National Kestrel Championship. Two races took place the first day following a short delay whilst waiting for the sea breeze to set in. The course was set with some interesting beats close into the shore to stay out of the strong tides and with some great kite reaches far out into the deep water channel which was luckily free of shipping for the day. We were pleased to take 14th in a closely contested first race and thoroughly delighted to be placed as high as 7th in Race 2. As we finished the Haar rolled in and competitors made their way to the clubhouse for a drink, dinner and a review of the day.

Day 2 saw similar conditions but sadly not similar results. Despite best efforts with close tacks into the shore to avoid the very strong tides we couldn’t replicate the results of the previous day eventually slumping to 18th.

Disappointment was later drowned at the lovely wine and nibbles reception kindly hosted by one of the club’s longstanding members. Sunday was the closest we experienced to a ‘typical’ Scottish summer day with increased wind and occasional light drizzle making it an easy choice to sit out the crew’s race and conserve the energy for the afternoon’s long distance race. This took us upstream, under the Tay Road Bridge for some windward leeward circuits close to Discovery on the Dundee waterfront before returning, culminating in a fabulous three-sail reach across the width of the river. We finally won out in a battle with some of our closest competitors and finished a creditable 10th, well deserving of the Bar-B-Q served on the terrace of the club, overlooking the river. The better weather returned for the final day and more close racing throughout the fleet saw the Championship placings being decided by the final race. The title going to Stuart and Mhari Murdoch of RTYC. We ended up in 14th place, not a bad effort following a week of great sailing. The presence of four Royal Tay YC boats in the top 5 suggests that local knowledge may have played a part. The smiles on the faces of all the competitors suggest that Royal Tay YC is a venue which knows how to host a great event.

CLUB PRIZE GIVING AND SOCIAL EVENT 19th October, 2014

Once again the Club took over Lanes Hotel for the Annual Prize Giving and Social Event. The first part of the evening was the presentation of prizes for the Thursday Evening Series, the Winter, Freezer, Spring, Summer and Autumn AM and PM Series, The Club Championship and the Annual Prizes (full list

on page 6). A nautical quiz was available where every entrant won a pen (well who goes to a party with a pen?). The quiz was won by

Adrian Neal as he had all the questions correct and was closest to estimating the tie-breaking question of how long was a cheesed down length of rope. After the buffet supper the Club was entertained by ‘The Commodores’, well two ex and the current commodore who sang their

version of Rob Stewarts’s ‘Sailing’ and Alan’s version of ‘Sailing Matilda’.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 The day started with a mirror finish on the water and absolutely no wind. The forecast was for a decent breeze later on from the SSW-SW so whilst considering a postponement the committee boat was geared up. A gentle breeze filled in at 11.00am so a course was set with Committee Boat starts for three races with two to count. A decent breeze built for most of the races with the odd lull and a few more lively spells. There were some good tussles to be had between various groups of boats, with good tactics and use of the wind shifts rewarding those who used them to their advantage. A lack of wind for the start of race 3 meant a small delay but it soon filled in quite strongly making for a decent race again. Howard Frear (Streaker) with a 1,2,1 deserved the overall win though he might just have been getting worried before the start of the final race with a couple of possible contenders for the title. In the end, with Rob J being OCS at the start and Richard F being unable to find an answer to Howard’s down wind pace, the result was a clear win for Howard by some margin. Of particular note today was the closeness of many of the results. Several places were within one second and in the final race three positions were taken in as many seconds on corrected times. Many thanks to Mrs Neal, my assistant today and to OOD A our Commodore for standing in at short notice OOD B: Ian Stephenson, the galley team and to all who competed today. Prizes were allocated for 1st - 3rd for adults and juniors, 1st lady helm and 1st two handed boat. Trophies were awarded at the Prize Giving and Social Event. Apologies for raising the Blue Peter upside down in race 1 and for inadvertently raising S at the start of race 3, you don’t miss much you lot! In the afternoon a ‘Hamper Race’ was held. 36 boats started at the Halstock end of the reservoir and in a fresher wind a race of 5 laps was held. Race Officer Lou Hart put numbers 1 to 36 in a tin and the number drawn would be compared with the race results and that boat’s crew would win the hamper donated by Waitrose. Number 22 was drawn and the 22nd boat was the Solo helmed by Alan Chinn our Commodore! Without doubt, Sunday 21st September, 2014 was a date to remember in the history of Sutton Bingham Sailing Club. The support for a world record attempt to stage the largest sailing race with donations towards the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation brought out Club members in droves. We had to stage on the day a race of at least one kilometre, lasting at least 15 minutes with a minimum of 25 boats on the start line. Independent witnesses were required as were details of the race conditions and an exact measurement of the course. Lou Hart assisted by Rob Jamieson took all these requirements in their stride and set up an excellent sailing day along with medals for all participants, a splendid raffle with prizes donated by local traders and an afternoon race for a hamper donated by Waitrose. Fortunately the sun shone, a reasonable breeze from the east stayed with us all day and at 11.30, the start line was a mass of boats. Among the starters were several newer members racing for the first time and our Race Officer warned us all to ‘Race Nice’, which of course we all did. According to our calculations, our race was won by Ian Jay in his Phantom but as we were racing against 600+ other clubs at all sorts of venues, the race HQ received all our results and put the race information and each boat’s elapsed time into a computer. To add to the day, Hugh Tetlow cooked on the barbecue assisted by members and fed seventy odd hungry sailors and families. Total amount raised by our Club exceeded £1,000.

Just before the start, boats mass on the line.

Sunday 21st September - 46 boats started, 46 boats finished!

Thursday Night sailors looking forward to next April when the PM Series starts again

Thursday Evening Extension Races For a number of years, a few stalwarts continue sailing during September on Thursday evenings for a short four race series with one start at 6pm. With high pressure hanging over England for most of the month, light to zephyr winds made racing difficult but Race Officers made decisions so that all those who raced for the time set were given places. With three races to count, first place went to Howard Frear (Streaker), 2nd Adrian Neal (Solo), 3rd Chris Jones (Laser). First two handed boat and 4th was Chris and Kaya Hutton (Enterprise). Andrew Frost was top male cadet (RS Tera Pro) and Endeavour Prize and top female cadet was Kelsey Green (Laser Pico). Thanks to all members who volunteered to be Race Officer and Safety Boat Crews. The next Thursday Evening Race Series starts on 4th April, 2015. Can you be on the water for 6.30pm?

AUTUMN SERIES 2014 The Series ran from the 24th August to 19th September and was raced in all winds from balmy breezes to howling gales (well windy anyway). Most races saw competitors sailing in shorts and t-shirts (with the compulsory buoyancy aid of course) but full wet suits and at least one dry suit was noted on the last race day, which was a very windy day. Prizes were awarded at the Club’s Prize Giving and Social Event in the form of vouchers redeemable as part of next year’s membership fees. Thanks to all Race Officers and to Richard Frost who had to work out the final results on the afternoon of the 19th ready for the Prize Giving in the evening. The Winter AM and PM Series started on 26th October and runs through to 28th December. Note the PM Races in this Series will run back-to-back starting at 1.30pm. Results: AM Series 1st Howard Frear (Streaker) 2nd Adrian Neal (Solo) 3rd Andy Roxburgh (Solo) PM Series: 1st Adrian Neal (Solo) 2nd Howard Frear (Streaker) 3rd Chris Bottomley (Phantom) 4th Andy Roxburgh (Solo)
