Letter from the Principal Dear Oswego East Family, In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” In recognition of National Women's History Month, we celebrate all women who have made and continue to make positive contributions throughout history and present day society. I think we all can agree with Eleanor Roosevelt that it is better to have solutions to problems than to just complain about problems. Our students, families, and staff all work together as a team to solve problems and create possibilities for all students to be successful and pursue their dreams. The month of February was a fun, busy, and successful month; thus the reason I didn’t want it to come to an end. In addition to celebrating Black History Month, Oswego East also experienced its annual International Fest sponsored by MOSAIC, our choir and band members gave yet another great performance, and we had students participate in art competitions, concerts, and athletic events throughout the state. Just recently, students from the Government Club participated in the Harvard Model Congress event where 1,500 students from around the globe joined our students in competition and learning. To close out Black History Month, the Black Student Association hosted its annual family night dinner event. It was an evening of celebration with song, dance, spoken word and wonderful food. Thank you to all of our parents, teachers, staff, and students who come out to various events to support our Oswego East family and to those who organize and offer such amazing events. We have definitely been busy and we are looking forward to another amazing month in March. Our juniors are preparing to take the SAT on April 5th. All juniors received SAT information from Mr. Chris Grays, Assistant Principal of Student Services. Mr. Grays talked with the Class of 2018 about SAT and the resources they can access on the College Board website. Please visit: https://www.khanacademy.org/sat?affiliateId=www%7Chome&bannerId=ht%7Cgt-st-conn-sat-pr to learn more about SAT, Kahn Academy, and the resources that will help your student be success on the SAT. I encourage juniors and all students to plan for and take the ACT on the national ACT test days. Please contact your counselor for additional information or visit: http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act.html for more information. On Monday, March 13th, I will hold a coffee chat with parents in the LRC from 6pm to 7pm. The main topic will be homework but parents are more than welcome to discuss any topic at this meeting, as this is a wonderful time to hear from you so we can serve you and our students better. For those who are interested, the school board meeting will begin in the Community Room at 7pm. I look forward to meet with you on Monday, March 13th at 6pm. Please watch my Twitter page and our website for future coffee chat dates and times. In closing, I would like to thank each of you for all you do for Oswego East. You play such an important role in the education process of students and I recognize that we cannot do all that we do without your involvement and input. We truly value you as our family member and I am so humbly gracious to serve this great school and community as your principal. Please contact me or any member of our phenomenal staff if you have any questions, suggestions or need assistance. Have a wonderful National Women’s History Month! Yours in service, Scott Savage Scott L. Savage, Principal

Three junior OEHS students in Mrs. Klix's class are participating in the Illinois IT Learning Exchange 2017 Raspberry Pi Student Application Challenge. High school student teams are invited to demonstrate an application they have built using a Raspberry Pi and peripherals.

The student team must demonstrate the end result of their created technology. The Illinois IT Learning Exchange will select 30 student teams to showcase their completed application on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Illinois Institute of Technology. Interested student teams register

and submit a one minute YouTube video describing the application they will build and demonstrating its use.

At the BUILD IT showcasing event, a panel of volunteer judges will evaluate and score each student team's demonstrated application. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winning teams. All student teams will receive a Certificate of Achievement for participating,

as well as a gift bag of goodies.

Best of luck to Sparsh Srivastava, Max Villanueva, and Gillian Enriquez on their 2017 application! Check out their awesome video at this link!

It’s time to start enrolling in our summer Driver Education classes. We are allowing students who will turn 15 by Feb 28, 2017, to enroll in this summer’s courses. By enrolling in one of the summer sections, your student will be able to test for their driver’s license by their sixteenth birthday. Students can do this by meeting the state requirement of passing the classroom and behind the wheel portions of Driver Education.

Starting January 11, eligible students will have the opportunity to sign up for one of four sections. During lunch periods, students can reserve their spot by bringing a check made out to OEHS for $250 to Student Services. This is the required school fee for the course. Students will also need to know what section they are going to be able to take. The sections listed below are only for the classroom portion of class. The behind the wheel (BTW) portion will be scheduled with your student during the class. BTW consists of 6 hours of driving with a certified instructor. These hours will be scheduled before or during summer break, and will be completed by August 31, 2017. Sign up is on a first come first served basis. The following are the dates and times of the sections that still have open spots:

Section 3: June 5-June 30 (20 class days) Monday-Friday 8:00am-10:00am Section 4: June 5-June 30 (20 class days) Monday-Friday 10:30– 12:30 Classroom attendance is extremely important! Students are only allowed to miss THREE classes before being dropped from the course without a refund of the class fee. Dropping of the class will occur on the FOURTH absence.

Please note that students will be taking a driving permit test the first few days of class. The link below is the Illinois Rules of the Road book on which the test is based. You may also pick up a hard copy at any local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). There is a $20 fee for the permit that is paid to the Secretary of State. A form will be filled out during the class, printed out and sent home for you to sign. It must be returned immediately so we can have it processed with the state to ensure that your student can obtain their driving permit once they pass the written and vision test.

Students receive their driving permit through the school. Over the past years we have gone to an electronic system for permits with the State of Illinois, and due to this we do our permit testing in conjunction with our class, not before. http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/rules_of_the_road/rrtoc.html Students are also responsible for remembering what session they are enrolled in. There will not be another mailing or reminder with this information sent to the student.

Any questions, please feel free to contact Laura Nussle at [email protected] or at 630-636-2252. We look forward to teaching your student to drive!

On Tuesday, January 24th, all Junior students participated in an SAT presentation during guided studies. Students received specific information about the SAT and

created College Board and Khan Academy accounts to assist with test preparation. Students also received an SAT "Student Guide" in addition to other resources

that can assist them with preparing for the upcoming SAT.

We also shared that the SAT has replaced the ACT as the Illinois state assessment

and therefore completing the exam is a requirement for graduation. Many colleges are now using both the ACT and SAT as an entrance exam,

but it is highly recommended that students review each college’s entrance requirements to ensure they are meeting

all the necessary prerequisites for admission.

SAT® Grade 11 Implementation FAQ

Posted 09/09/2016 The College Board’s SAT with essay will be administered as the state assessment in Illinois high schools beginning in the 2016-17 school year. All public school students enrolled in grade 11 will take the SAT with essay unless they take an alternate assessment. 1) Is SAT required for receipt of a regular high school diploma? Because SAT will be administered as the state assessment in high school, it fulfills the requirement in Section 2-3.64a-5 of the School Code that students take the state assessment (further defined as an assessment for college and career readiness) in order to receive a regular high school diploma, unless eligible to take the alternative assessment or otherwise exempt from testing. 2) Must SAT scores be placed on transcripts? Yes. Section 2-3.64a-5 of the School Code requires that scores on the state assessment in high school (further defined as an assessment for college and career readiness) must be placed on the student’s permanent record and entered on the student’s transcript as provided by administrative rules impending the Illinois School Student Records Act. 3) Can districts “blank” attendance for students to accommodate testing procedures related to administration of SAT? Yes. Because SAT fulfills the requirement in Section 2-3.64a-5 of the School Code that students take the state assessment (further defined as an assessment for college and career readiness), it also meets the requirements in Section 18-8.05 of the School Code with regard to compilation of average daily attendance. 4) Can students who are eligible to take the Dynamic Learning Maps-Alternate Assessment (DLM-AA) also take SAT at their option? Yes. Section 2-3.64a-5 of the School Code provides

“Students receiving special education services whose individualized educational programs identify them as eligible for the alternative State assessments nevertheless shall have the option of taking this State’s regular assessment that includes a college and career ready determination, which shall be administered in accordance with the eligible accommodations appropriate for meeting these students’ respective needs.”

5) Is there any change to the definition of “grade 11” or the requirements for promotion to grade 12 with the introduction of SAT as the state assessment? No. The definition of “grade 11” and the requirements for promotion have not changed. Regarding the state assessment, 23 Ill. Admin. Code Section 1.30 defines grade 11 as “the point in time when a student has earned the number of credits necessary for enrollment in grade 11, as determined by his or her school district in accordance with Sections 1.420(b) and 1.440 of this Part.” SAT will be administered as the state assessment at grade 11 beginning in the 2016-2017 school year and is required by Section 1.30 for promotion to grade 12. 6) If a student is in grade 12 during the 2016-17 school year but did not previously take PARCC during high school, is that student eligible to receive a regular high school diploma? ISBE recognizes that the transition between a grade-level system of assessment and a course-based system of assessment at the high school level presented structural implementation challenges. In certain cases, graduation requirements during this period of transition may have posed such challenges. ISBE does not expect students in the Class of 2017 who were not enrolled in an assessed course during the 2014-15 or 2015-16 school years and who are enrolled in grade 12 during the 2016-17 school year to take an assessment for a grade level in which they are not enrolled for the purpose of obtaining a diploma. 7) A state-funded college entrance exam was not administered during the 2015-16 school year. Can a student who was in grade 11 during the 2015-16 school year take the state assessment this year because it is a college entrance exam? The College Board’s SAT will be administered as the state assessment at high school to all grade 11 students. A school district may choose to offer college entrance exams to other grades of students at the district’s cost.

To celebrate the 2017 graduating class of OEHS and wish them well on their journey, the parents of Oswego East High School Seniors are hosting “SENIOR CELEBRATION 2017” & Great America Grad Night on May 13, 2017.

Senior Celebration is a high school milestone that most students remember for a lifetime. It's an evening of fun activities held at the school - inflatables, door prizes, games, concessions... Afterward, seniors who have registered for Grad Night will be bussed to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee. The registration form for both Senior Celebration and Grad Night is on the next page and contains all the information about times and transportation. Seniors, you don't want to miss this amazing experience!!

Parents, sign up to take part in the planning! New parents are ALWAYS welcome! Next meeting will be March 11, 2017 at 9:00 am, in the OEHS LRC. We will then meet the 2nd Saturday of every month. Enter door #1 (main entrance) and go through the commons up the grand staircase to the Library. Want to get involved, but might not be able to attend the monthly meeting? There are various committees you can join - just email us at [email protected].

A Six Flags Grad Nite ticket is $55 and includes transportation to and from the park. You can purchase your tickets at www.oewolfparents.com/senior-celebration. All tickets must be purchased with registration form/permission slip (next 3 pages) by April 14. Season passes will not be accepted on this night. Please read the following information carefully. All the rides, games, and food places at Six Flags will be open. There will also be DJs & music

throughout the park. There will be security throughout the park & at all entrances. No one will be able to leave the park at any time during the night until the event is over at 5:00 am. Food is not included in the ticket price.

The buses will depart OEHS no later than 9:30 pm, with check in starting at 9:00pm. This is a private event. No cars are permitted in the parking lot of Six Flags. Only school busses are allowed, therefore no one will be able to drive.

There will be a minimum of 2 teacher chaperones on each bus. No parent volunteers will be needed. All students will need to stay with a group of OE students with no less than 2 students per group. Students will be assigned to buses on their way to and from Six Flags. There will be at least two

chaperones and about 40 students per bus. Students will return to the bus they arrived on and check in at 5am with their chaperone. Once all

students are on the buses they will depart and will return to OEHS to drop off students (at about 6:30 am). Please have rides available at that time.

Great America has a very strict code of conduct on this night and if it is not followed you will be removed from the park and your parents would need to come pick you up.

District permission slips can be found on the following three newsletter pages or at above web site and must be turned into the main office with registration form and payment in order to attend.

There will be a mandatory meeting for students attending Grad Nite after tickets are purchased to select busses and go over rules and expectations. Date TBA.
