Her first quilt was a T-shirt quilt, which she enjoyed making, but felt limited in the ability to express her artistic capabilities. Within several months, she began to design pictorial landscape quilts using raw edge applique, thread painting, and a variety of embellishments. Never knowing the “rules” she broke a lot of them, but with exciting results. She will be discussing her journey in quilting. During her Friday workshop participants will learn how to create beautiful quilts using dimensional thread painting techniques with your domestic machine.

President’s Perspective Suzanne Jones

If you’ve checked the calendar you know that the holidays are approaching quickly and I’m sure you’re busy crafting away for your family and friends. On top of holiday sewing, I have got one wedding quilt and three baby quilts that need to be completed before the end of the year. I’m trying to use my stash and not make any new purchases. How many times have you said that? While you’re in the sewing mood consider working on a quilt or two for charity. I’m looking forward to this month’s speaker, Joyce Hughes.

I have been intrigued by the thread painting technique for many years but never actually given it a try. I’m sure I’ll be inspired after hearing Joyce speak, and maybe taking her workshop, if I can take a day off of work. Think about inviting a friend or two to join you for her lecture.

See you on the 14th!

November’s Speaker Cathy Labrie and Barb Pepper

Our speaker on November 14 will be Joyce Hughes. Joyce is a self-taught, award-winning art quilter and fiber artist.

Challenge Kyrass Conrad

The theme for the GLHQ 2019–2020 Quilt Guild Challenge is Hearts and Flowers. Anything goes! Entries can be up to and including lap quilt size (max 36” x 66”), quilted clothing, quilted purses or tote bags, etc. Entry must be completely finished.  Each entry must contain at least one flower and one heart. Flowers and hearts can be pieced, appliqued, embroidered, printed fabric, quilted on. Will your entry win first prize because everyone would want to take it home with them? Because of the quality of the needlework? Or because it is so beautiful or unique or charming? Entries are due at the June 2020 meeting. If you have labeled your quilted item, please baste a piece of fabric over your label; entries must be anonymous. Happy sewing!

Haven

Carol Brooks

Haven thanks you for last months generous donations. In December Haven has a Gift Givaway for their clients, 252 adults and 556 children. Volunteers accompany clients and help them pick out special gifts for their children and themselves. Unfortunately this giveaway happens on December 11 and 12, before our December meeting. We can participate in this if we get our gift in by the November meeting. There are too many items to list here, but if you buy clothes you can purchase anything from infant to adult in any gender. Toys for different ages would be great. Remember no violent toys. Gift card of $10 and $20 are helpful (Target, Meijer, Walmart). All items must be new. Please leave all tag/prices on items. I have to give the total cost of everything and that would help. If anyone is interest in volunteering for this event you can contact Christina Ramsey at 248-334-1284. They will be setting everything up on December 8 and 9, and helping clients shop on the 11th and 12th. It will be a very rewarding experience to help out with this event.

Volunteer Opportunity Days For Girls International is looking for your help for a worthy cause. We believe in the inherent value and dignity of every woman and girl in the world. All women deserve reliable feminine hygiene protection, enabling them to attend school or work and to provide for their families. The fact is many women and girls don’t have access to sanitary napkins or tampons to manage their periods. In many parts of the world, disposing of used feminine products is not practical. The Days for Girls solution provides reusable feminine hygiene kits that lasts up to 3 years.
