President’s Report Hi everyone and welcome to
an exciting 2017 at Diamond Hills Preschool. On
behalf of the committee I send a warm welcome to
our returning families and a very warm welcome to
all new families joining us.
We at Diamond Hills are extremely lucky to have a
wonderful bunch of teachers who through this
beautiful kinder will share a wonderful journey with
you and your child. We hope your child enjoys this
year as much as we do.
As this is my first report for the year, I would like to
acknowledge the work of the outgoing Committee
of Management and thank them for their efforts
over the last 12 months. It is also great to see that
some of the 2016 Committee members have
stayed on this year to support the work of the
Committee and the Preschool.

President’s Report Continued Parent involvement at kinder is important to your child’s development and education. Helping children make the transition to kindergarten and later to primary school
through parent involvement can assist in a child’s future success. Whether you work,
or are at home, there are plenty of opportunities for all parents to get involved during
the day, evenings or on the weekends. Whatever suits your lifestyle! For example get
behind the working bees, assist with fundraising activities, and don’t forget the kinder
duty roster. It is a great way to be involved and our children love it when a loved one is
on duty.
Diamond Hills welcomes parents who are interested in sending their children in 2018,
to do so any day, so if you have any family, friends or neighbors who may be
interested in attending, please encourage them to come on down and see Diamond
Hills when it suits them.
The Committee of Management is here to ensure the effective running of the kinder. If
you have any concerns about your child or the kinder, it is best to raise these with your
child’s teacher in the first instance. Members of the committee are always available if
you have any concerns that are unable to be resolved. The names for the members of
the Committee can be found on the kinder website and notice board. Wishing you all
the very best for a fun and exciting 2017!
Committee Position Available - Fees Officer Required
The Committee has a vacancy for a volunteer Fees Officer. Primarily this role involves

Fundraiser Report On behalf of the Fundraising Committee at
Diamond Hills Pre-School we wish to welcome
you to the Diamond Hills community and
explain our role to you.
Diamond Hills is a not for profit community run
kindergarten that is administrated by a
committee of volunteer parents. In order to
continue to deliver quality programs to our
students, Diamond Hills Preschool undertakes
a variety of fundraising programs each year.
We rely heavily on the generosity of our
families in supporting our fundraising efforts
both through selling various items and providing
donations that we can raffle or offer as prizes at
our fundraising events.
The funds we raise are vital to supplement government funding to keep the kinder
running in 2017 and beyond. This is a task that we couldn’t achieve without the help of
our Diamond Hills families and the local community.
We do appreciate that families are busy and we truly appreciate any support that you are
able to give. Please remember that every dollar raised goes directly back into the kinder
and thus, into your child’s positive experience.
Term1 Fundraiser
Our first fundraising program for 2017 will be a
Cadbury Chocolate Drive. This fundraiser is both
simple and delicious! Every Freddo & Friends box we
sell will raise $20 for Diamond Hills. We’re asking all
our families to sell at least one box for us but feel free
to grab another box if you’ve got lots of hungry buyers
lined up!

Illness and Exclusion Periods If your child has been ill, cranky, has a severe runny nose, has or has had diarrhoea in
the last 48 hours, a fever, temperature, or vomiting - please do not send them to
kinder. One of our priorities is to "provide a safe and healthy environment for all
children, staff, volunteers, students on placement and any other persons participating in
or visiting the service."
If your child has a particularly contagious or more serious condition, please notify
staff. Please be aware that some illnesses also require other family members be
excluded from Preschool. For information about illness exclusion periods please visit the
Victorian Government Health Website.

Hello and welcome to all our new and returning families to
Diamond Hills Preschool. We hope that your journey with your
child at our preschool is a positive and rewarding one, where
new friendships and wonderful memories are made.
We began the year with a
staggered orientation process,
where the children spent increasing
increments of time getting to know
each other, the educators and the
kinder environment. This is an
important process as it allows
Kathryn and I time to develop and
establish warm and trusting
relationships with the children,
which will help to develop the
children’s sense of belonging and
self-identity. It also allows the
children time to explore and engage
with their environment and peers.
The Early Years Learning Framework guides our
understanding that children need to feel safe, secure and
supported by their educators, peers and environment, in
order to develop a sense of belonging to the kinder group.
The family photos displayed in our kinder
room help to foster that sense of belonging
as children like to look at and point out their
family to the educators and their peers. The
photos also provide a level of comfort for
children that need some reassurance. If you
haven’t already done so, please send a
framed photo to kinder for display.

Although I do not conduct parent/ teacher
interviews throughout the year, if you have
any queries or concerns about your child,
please contact us and I am happy to make
a time to meet with you. The end of
sessions is usually a good time to catch
me, alternatively during kinder duty is a
great opportunity to have a chat about your
child’s progress.
It's been a great start to the year with the
children settling in beautifully. One or two
children needed an extra cuddle from
Kathryn or I to help them settle, but within a
short time they became engaged in learning
areas. Please rest assured that we will not
allow your child to remain unsettled, and we
will call you if we believe it to be in the
child's best interest. We want to create a
positive start to your child's kinder year. At
this stage of the year we are also
establishing some kinder rules to keep
everyone safe. The children have helped to establish some of these rules about
appropriate behaviour indoors and outdoors. Thank you to all parents and caregivers
for being patient at the end of the session as we learn whom belongs to whom.
Three-year-old kinder is a time where children can
explore and engage in their environment using all
their senses. The Preschool program provides
children with the opportunities to practice and
achieve mastery of critical skills such as cognitive,
physical and social skills. As educators, we seize
opportunities to scaffold their learning to stretch and
extend areas of strength and provide additional
opportunities and support where it is needed, all
within a play-based environment that encourages
children to enjoy learning.

So far the children have used playdough,
played with water and bubbles, poured
and sifted sand, listened to the sound of
the sea in shells, danced with ribbons,
engaged in imaginative and dramatic play
with puppets and home corner, gone
fishing, constructed train tracks and built
with blocks and finally explored the
outdoor environment by climbing trees
and play equipment, watered the garden
and explored the riverbed. And it’s only
been two weeks! During the next few weeks, we will concentrate on trying to learn each
other’s names through songs and games and conversations during snack time.
Photos of your child’s experiences are displayed on the TV facing the verandah. Please
take a moment to see what your child has been up to. Children’s artwork is also on
display inside the kinder room on the left wall as you enter and any extra work is place
in an art box which you will also find on the bench on the verandah.
We are always looking at ways to improve
the transition between inside and outside and
we have decided to try placing the children’s
sunhats in the smaller slot above their locker
upon arrival (a great suggestion offered by a
mum). Could parents please help their child
place their labelled sun smart sunhat every
kinder session in the slot and remember to
apply sunscreen before coming to kinder.
Finally, Diamond Hills is having a welcome night on Friday March 3rd
at 5:30pm where
families, siblings and kinder children can spend some time having a picnic on the kinder
lawn, engage in the entertainment and get to know other families. It’s a great night, so
please try to come if you can. RSVP Friday 24th Feb.
Till next time,
Kathryn and Tania

We would like to welcome all our families not only those who are returning to Diamond Hills but to all our new families who are beginning their child’s learning journey with us. If you haven’t already please feel free to approach any of the staff and introduce yourself. We hope that you will find this year a fun and memorable one for your child and your family.
The Platypus children have started the year positively, settling in well in their first couple of weeks. One of our main aims for the beginning of the year is to help the children gain a sense of belonging in their new environment. At this time of year we begin to work towards the children feeling confident, establishing their sense of wellbeing and to help them gain a sense of identity within the group. One of the ways that we ask you to help if you haven’t already, is to bring in a photo of your family, ASAP. The children LOVE having their family on display.
On Monday 13th February the children began attending
full time sessions. They are learning and adapting to the routine and structure of kinder. This includes learning our rules that are aimed at keeping everyone safe. This is a time of adjustment for the children as they learn what is acceptable and what isn’t. We do have lots of discussions on this topic and at any time if you have any queries please ask.
One of the ways that we get to know the children in this early stage is through their interests. They have so far showed an interest inside in imaginative play, play dough, sensory play and painting. The children have also been very interested in being introduced to our pets especially Turtle and the Stick insects.

Outdoors has seen an interest in water play especially in their sand play, using the flying fox, the swings and watching Dodge and Elliot (the ducks) take a bath.
Hopefully the program that is displayed on the noticeboard each week reflects the interests that the children are displaying and where our learning is centered. This of course will alter as the children’s interests change.
Also it is very important that every child brings a recognized SUN SMART hat to kinder EACH SESSION to wear. Even on cloudy days it is vital that they still have a hat to wear. Please make sure that their hats are clearly named.
There is a helping roster out by the sign in book and we would love a family member to try and come to kinder and spend some time with their kinder child. This is a great way of seeing how your child ‘operates’ in a group with 25 other children all of the same age. There is NO commitment on the time that you spend at kinder with us. Even if you only have a short time to stay we do appreciate this.
As you are probably aware the Gardening Roster has been distributed via your child’s pocket. If you have any questions regarding this please just ask. The first half of the year it is the Platypus’ turn to do the Gardening Roster with the Penguin group taking over when we finish.
At kinder we have 2 special kinder friends (River and Splash the Platypus’) who will take it in turns to visit each child’s home.

The way that we choose which child will take one of the friends home is that we go down the list of children’s names. This ensures that everyone has an equal amount of turns, it also means that everyone has to be patient as it does take quite a long time for each child’s turn to come around. Each child will get to take both River and Splash home throughout the year.
They loved to be cuddled, have stories read to them and be snuggled in bed. There is no expectation on journal writing etc. they just go home for the experience and to help establish a link between kinder and home.
If at anytime you have anything that you would like to share with us please don’t hesitate to let us know.
Please remember if you have any query at anytime no matter how small, please ask. Remember email is a great way to communicate.

‘Welcome’ and ‘welcome back’ to our children, staff and parents.
Bronwen, Kyla, Kathryn and Kim, warmly welcome you to the
Penguin group of 2017. We are looking forward to getting to know
everyone and sharing in lots of incredible learning and fun with your
child.
For those of you who are new to Diamond
Hills, we hope you have a positive and
rewarding experience with us and that you
will make lots of new friendships and
experience many memories to treasure.
Thank you to all our committee for
volunteering your precious time to keep our
kindergarten functioning effectively – we
really appreciate it.
It was great to catch up with everyone at our interviews. We hope that you felt
welcome and informed. It was lovely to meet our new families and to catch up with our
familiar ones! Please remember to contact us if you have any queries. We don’t offer
scheduled parent-teacher interviews throughout the year; but I am very happy to make
a time with you if you wish to catch up about your child’s progress or any concerns you
may have. Your Kinder roster session is a great opportunity to catch up with your
child’s teachers also.
Please keep an eye out for the newsletter
Penguin reports each month, which will keep
you up to date with your child’s learning at
Diamond Hills and upcoming events. The
television facing the verandah has weekly
photographs of the children’s experiences. You
will receive a ‘transition’ report in November and

The Penguin group has had a great
start to the year and are enthusiastic,
social and busy. We currently have a
group of 23 children and we are really
enjoying getting to know each and every
one of them. The children are settling in
really positively and are forming
relationships with their teachers,
renewing past acquaintances and
making new friends. The children have
been productive and enthusiastic and
keen to experience a variety of learning
activities. We have kept these
experiences reasonably simple at this
stage of the year to promote the
children’s confidence in themselves and their environment. It is important to offer the
children certain experiences repeatedly, as research shows that this is how children’s
brain develops and skills are, mastered/improved.
The initial weeks of our kinder program are
aimed at making the children feel happy and
secure in their new environment, building
relationships with staff and encouraging
them to participate in the sessions’ routine –
this is an important time to encourage and
foster that sense of Belonging which
underpins the Early Years Learning and
Development Framework. We are
displaying family photos in the play room to
promote the children’s sense of belonging
and comfort in this environment. It is a lovely way to get to know the children and for the
children to share their loved ones with their peers. We will also be introducing a folder
for the children to sign in each day as well, just like their parents! This also builds their
sense of belonging, identity and of course early literacy skills. (We know not all children
can write their name; but they can ‘pretend’ or put the first letter of their name

Cultural diversity is an important principle and practice in early childhood education and
is an important part of a child’s sense of belonging. As I mentioned in our Orientation
pack, we would love to incorporate text, stories, songs, greetings, cooking/anything you
feel is relevant to your child and his/her cultural background. If there are any
grandparents out there who would like to share their cultural cooking prowess with their
grandchild and friends, we would love to have you! We will be learning how to greet and
farewell our kinder friends in different languages also.
At this time of the year, we are learning lots about our kinder animals. The penguin
group will be involved in the care and feeding of our menagerie! And they will be
learning interesting facts about our stick insects, ducks and turtle. The children will be
involved in gathering fresh gum leaves for the stick insects, letting out and feeding the
chooks and of course Dodge and Elliot the ducks, love it when we make them a bath.
As per our Early Years Learning and Development Framework, the program is working
towards the following learning outcomes:
Identity: use effective routines to help make predicted transitions smoothly
Community: begin to recognise they have a right to belong to many communities.
Wellbeing: demonstrate trust and confidence
Learning: are curious and enthusiastic participants in their learning.
Communication: engage in enjoyable reciprocal interactions using verbal and non-
verbal language.

Don’t forget to check out the Penguin program plan, posted on the notice board near

be reflections of the children’s learning journey on the whiteboard and television screen,
please take the time to read and watch these. Please feel free to make comment

We encourage you to check out the educational theory
behind your child’s preschool
experience, which is displayed on our early childhood
education ‘tree’ in the locker area
and includes principles, practices and outcomes for this
curriculum.
To further encourage the positive transition between
home and preschool, and to foster the children’s sense of
community and belonging to Diamond Hills, our Penguin
mascots and Friendship Book will be coming home for
sleepovers in a few weeks. Our Penguin mascots will be
visiting all our families this year and we encourage the
children and families to complete a page to be included
in your child’s learning journal – that may be a drawing
of the Penguin and their kinder friend/
photos/ short diary entries etc. He/she
stays overnight, and comes back to kinder
at your child’s next session.
Examples of your child’s learning journey at
kinder will be documented in their own
Learning Journal/blog. We are about to
trial an online version of this documentation
to share with families – more information at
a later stage. They (learning journals/blog)
provide valuable information which can be
used to establish strong links between home and kindergarten and provide parents with
an insight into some of the things that happen when their child is at kinder. Through

GROUP REPRESENTATIVE
We are asking for a parent group representative for the Penguin group. This involves
organising some coffee mornings for parents during kinder sessions throughout the
year and helping to raise awareness with our parents about upcoming fundraising,
social events etc. Please see Kim if you are interested in volunteering for the role.
We would like everyone to feel welcome and included at Diamond Hills, so keep
your eye out on the sign-in book for upcoming get-togethers.
Things to remember:
Kinder roster on sign in book – please place your name in where you can – really
appreciated by staff and your child.
Gardening roster for the Penguins begins in 2nd
half of year – will send out a note
closer to our turn.
Many thanks to those who have already donated toilet paper
Don’t forget a labelled hat in your child’s bag every day and please note that
borrowed hats must be washed and returned asap (OHS policy)
We need a framed family photo from everyone.
Sunscreen to be applied before session
Check photo pocket and art box each session.
Be vigilant with our NUT FREE POLICY and the
snack alert exclusions for lunch and snack
boxes – anaphylaxis is a potentially life
threatening condition.
Remember Immunisation records of your child must be updated at the preschool
throughout the year.
And finally, we are looking forward to getting to know all of you throughout the year and
sharing this precious time in your child’s life. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have
any queries/concerns.
