The essence of Deepavali is Journey from Darkness to Light,
Life sans joy, heart sans compassion, mind sans imagination and intellect sans intuition is incomplete. Life is a celebration: Celebration is when all come together and BSQ is once again set to celebrate Deepavali, a celebration of Light. Let us all join together and spread the Light of Knowledge and Wisdom, of Good and
Compassion to all corners of the world.
As echelons of million lights adorn
and echoes of triumph and thunder swarm
watching even a tiny gleam perform
devouring ill
sparkling joy despite forlorn
exhorts a hearty & happy year surely born
It was only the other day, that we were preparing for Durga Puja. In no time we were saying “আসছে বের আবার
হছব |“. We celebrated Lakshmi Puja and now on to celebrate Diwali. Thanks to its proximity, Kali Puja has al-
so become a celebration of lights. On the night of the puja, every Bengali household is lit up with diyas. In In-
dia, children descend upon streets to burst crackers, ranging from the tarabati (fuljhari) to rockets. In Bris-
bane, we have seen a constant increase in zeal and enthusiasm in the celebrations of Diwali by various Indi-
an Communities and a lot of support from the local government.
BSQ will celebrate this joyous occasion on Sat Nov. 8th.
On Diwali, we wish our members joy and prosperity
Please join us on our Bijoya and Deepavali celebration at McGregor State School on

Season of Lights
Dunes of vapours from crackers rise,
Engulf, as odorous airs resound
Effusing joys to all abound
Pearls of gleams in these autumn nights
Adorn our lives else trite
Motley sparklers that light the skies
As soaring spirits of powder wander
Let us thank the heavenly might
In this festive season of lights.
Happy Deepavali

And not to forget ….
Kali Puja \ Shyama Puja
Just as Durga Puja hangover sets in, Diwali and Kali Puja show up on our
doorsteps. In keeping with the saying ‘ বাছরা মাছস খতছরা পাবতন ‘ (thirteen festivals
in twelve months), Bengalis celebrate not only Kali Puja, but Diwali as well.
The festivities aren't as big or as prolonged as those of Durga Puja, but we
are no less enthusiastic.
Kolkata Maidan, in the heart of the city, transforms into Baajir bajaar
(firecracker market), where hundreds flock to get their fanciest crackers.
The night before Kali Puja, Bengalis light 14 lamps or diyas at home. Some
believe the 14 lamps ward off evil spirits. Others say that the diyas symbolise
the past 14 generations, who are believed descend upon earth on that night.
Kali is believed to be an embodiment of shakti and an avatar of Goddess Dur-
ga. She is worshiped on a new moon night, where the traditional offerings
include meat and alcohol. The ‘ভ োগ’ can include ‘খিচুখি ’ and ‘মোাংস‘|
In ancient times animal sacrifices were made, but now vegetables like bottle
gourds or pumpkins are offered as a symbolic sacrifice.
