In 1994 Irwin and Leighton was selected by Princeton University for their phased “Summer” Fire Alarm System upgrade

project. Since 1994 we have been hon-ored to be a part of 20 years of related Fire Alarm and Fire Protection upgrades to both residential and academic build-ings on Princeton’s campus. Because the overall majority of the buildings were res-idence halls, all work was required to

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF “SUMMER” PROJECTS FOR PRINCETON UNIVERSITY

be completed over the summer months of June-August as the buildings must be ready for the students to arrive for each new academic year. We are proud to say that after 20 years our involvement con-tinues with the Fire Alarm Replacement Project! Every member of the Irwin & Leighton team throughout the years has played a vital role in cultivating this long standing relationship. We should all

be proud to have been actively involved on site in some manner over the last 20 years and to have called Princeton Uni-versity a valuable customer for over 60 years! The continued outstanding per-formance and hard work by every Irwin & Leighton team member will hopefully bring us another 60 years with Princeton!

IRWIN AND LEIGHTON IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE PROMOTION OF DAN MCCULLOUGH TO SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER!

NEWS

According to Dodge Data and Analytics, the U.S. construction industry will rise 9% to $612 billion over the next year, trounc-ing 2014’s 5% gain to $564 billion. But the face of these construction companies and how they do business is changing rapidly. 2015 brings big changes to the construc-tion industry and the trends marked here are the start to a new era in construction.

1Construction companies will con-tinue to ditching paper. Many com-panies will continue switching over

to construction management software with document management capabili-ties- making companies more ‘green’ and saving some up to $5,000 per year.

2Mobile apps with geo-fencing will boom in popularity. A geo-fence is a virtual barrier. It uses GPS to track

where an object is. With so many contrac-tors relying on time-tracking software to fi gure out what to pay whom, geo-fenc-ing apps are particularly helpful especial-ly when it comes to mobile tracking of timesheets eliminating the need for man-ual entry of time sheets when you are on the job.

2015 TRENDS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

33D printing will make its way onto more construction sites. With more fi rms focusing on green construc-

tion, cost-conscious managers will con-tinue turning to this tool. It is expected that 3D printers will actually increase 101% in 2015 alone. This being said, the industry is always careful with new tech-nology so we shouldn’t expect a full ad-aptation right away but most defi nitely within the decade.

4More commercial contracts will be green. Green building is trendy and cost-eff ective. According to

McGraw-Hill Construction, up to 48% of nonresidential building projects will be green. That’s $145 billion opportunity for construction fi rms. While there is skep-tism that LEED will keep dominating the green space, many fi rms will turn to green construction management software to help please their eco-conscious clients.

5Mico-apartment contracts will boom. Want to live in a closet? Many Millennials and Generation Yers ac-

tually do contributing to the rise of micro apartments.

Across the country, these tiny dwellings are fi nally gaining approval from city planners- which means more contracts for commercial builders.

6 The sharing economy will grow for the latest-model heavy equipment. According to a new whitepaper

called ‘Tech Innovations Drive Increases In Heavy Equipment Leases and Rentals,’ heavy construction equipment will in-creasinly be shared between construction companies. Expect more construction companies to share their forklifts, wheel loaders, and compact truck loaders over the next year. And as more construction companies follow the EPA’s initiative to do away with old Tier IV machinery, new equipment, like compliant heavy forklifts and excavators, will start joining in the the rental construction economy as well.
