Medilink Midlands, a pan-regional strategic alliance between the Medilinks in the east and West Midlands, has recently been established to bring the collective expertise of the two organisations together to preserve the interests of over 1,700 life science organisations within the region and stimulate growth to support this vital element of the Midlands economy.

Since their incorporation over 15 years ago, Medilink West and East Midlands have established comprehensive local connections, and through this partnership Medilink Midlands has a combined network of over 8,000 contacts in over 1,700 organisations within the Life Sciences sector, including the NHS, the AHSN network, major universities and a range of multi-nationals and high value start-ups.

Medilink Midlands has been created to further utilise the skills, knowledge and expertise resident within the current organisations and will provide a more strategic focus on influencing Midlands-wide initiatives that affect the Life Sciences industry, such as the Midlands Engine, as well as wider national initiatives such as the Accelerated Access Review. This will be alongside the operational work of the

existing regional organisations that includes skills training, business and innovation support, market access support, R&D collaboration, and access to business networks.

The launch of Medilink Midlands follows the announcement of the UK’s Industrial Strategy: government’s long-term plan to boost the productivity and earning power of people throughout the country. One of the five core foundations of the strategy is ‘places: prosperous communities across the UK’. Working alongside the Midlands Engine and other strategic alliances, Medilink Midlands’ sole aim is to help stimulate additional and value-added growth of the Midlands as a prosperous community for Life Sciences.

lord Henley, Business Minister, said:“Through our Industrial Strategy and the Life Sciences Sector Deal, we are committed to ensuring the UK is at the forefront of this burgeoning field and we will build on the strengths of our established clusters of excellence.

The new alliance formed through Medilink Midlands will play a vital role in delivering this vision in the continue >

Midlands, ensuring that the region plays a leading role in the life sciences revolution while bringing together the collective expertise of the NHS, the huge number of life sciences SMEs and universities in the region.”

dr darren Clark, director Medilink Midlands, commented:

“The UK’s medical technology sector is the third largest in Europe and 98% of the sector is made up of SMEs, the largest regional cluster of which is located in the Midlands. The Midlands is also home to a wide supply chain serving the Medical Technology, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology sectors. In recent years, Medilink East Midlands and Medilink West Midlands have been increasingly working together, and the formal establishment of

Medilink Midlands is a natural extension to continue to help the sector grow on a pan-regional basis.”

Grant Thornton UK LLP has come on board as a strategic partner of Medilink Midlands. Grant Thornton is one of the world’s largest professional services network of independent accounting and consulting member firms; to find out more information please visit www.grantthornton.co.uk.

Medilink West Midlands (Medilink WM) is proud to announce that one of its newest members, australian company ‘Orthocell ltd’ (Orthocell), has just signed its first distribution deal in the UK for its range of dental products.

Orthocell is a regenerative medicine company producing cellular therapies, and collagen scaffolds for the treatment of human tissue injuries and defects. Following the recent EU approval (CE Mark) for the collagen scaffold (CelGroTM), the company is focussed on driving key opinion-led product adoption and sales in dental bone and soft tissue indications. This will be followed by, in the short to medium term, regulatory submissions for the use of CelGroTM in other applications including tendons and ligaments, cartilage, nerve and other soft tissue defects.

This distribution deal initiates Orthocell’s business development plans for the UK. It marks the start of Orthocell bringing their innovative tissue and bone regeneration products to UK patients and clinicians.

The company aims to continue the great success they have achieved in other markets.

Orthocell will first launch ‘CelGroTM’, an off the shelf collagen scaffold which supports soft tissue and bone repair in dental applications.

In March this year, Medilink WM introduced Orthocell’s European Manager, Kevin Edwards, to Geoff Halligan, a long-established distributor and CEO of Carrera Medical, a subsidiary of their highly regarded dental laboratory here in the heart of Birmingham. Kevin described the year to date as being a busy period with extensive promotion of the exciting dental products from Orthocell. Kevin said, “It’s been great to meet such an ambitious and friendly group of people here in the West Midlands, so much so, we have been able to set up this distribution agreement in just under two months. Medilink WM and the Inward Investment Team of the UK Government have been outstanding in their help and support to Orthocell.” continue >

Medilink WM member Orthocell is a regenerative medicine company focused on regenerating mobility for patients by developing products for the repair of a variety of soft tissue injuries.

suCCEss sTORY

Kevin Edwards continued, saying, “Meeting Geoff Halligan and his business partner Jeff Caddick has been excellent as their knowledge and expertise within the UK dental market is second to none. Orthocell are very happy to have Carrera on board to promote and distribute ‘CelGroTM.”

Jeff Caddick reflected, “Today marks the official start of what has already proven to be a great relationship established when we met with the Australian Orthocell team including Professor Zheng, the inventor and CSO; Paul Anderson, CEO; and Gregor Maier, Sales and Marketing Director. This gave us the confidence required to launch our new company, Carrera Medical, in order to concentrate on bringing ‘CelGroTM’ to the UK dental industry.”

Geoff Halligan proudly announced to Medilink WM, “Within week one of marketing this amazing new dental game-changing product we have secured our first orders and we are in negotiations with a major dental chain. We couldn’t have asked for more!”

Kevin Edwards has advised that Orthocell’s business here in the UK is continuing to develop with assistance from the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN). Orthocell are in discussions to undertake specialist dental research which will complement and extend the existing data for Orthocell’s range of products as well as those currently in development. Orthocell hopes to make further announcements regarding this work in the near future and would like to acknowledge and thank WMAHSN and Medilink WM for their support in this region.

Medilink WM congratulates both Orthocell and Carrera Medical on this excellent start to their business. Following further introductions provided to Orthocell, Medilink WM are looking forward to announcing additional ground-breaking news on Orthocell and Carrera Medical’s growth and development here in the West Midlands and UK.

Orthocell’s leading medical device product is CelGro™, a collagen scaffold which facilitates tissue repair and healing in a variety of reconstructive and surgical applications. Orthocell recently received European regulatory approval (CE Mark) for CelGro™ and is being readied for market authorisation in the Us.

If you have a requirement for electrical cable assemblies or integration of electrical control panels, then look no further than CHH ConeX ltd, based in the heart of Birmingham, who have recently joined Medilink to offer their specialist products and services in the life sciences and Medical technologies sector.

CHH’s aim in joining Medilink is to collaborate with other members, satisfy their electrical cabling needs and offer to build the best fully integrated control cabinets for their machines and plant.

Since 1990 and currently from their 55,000 sq ft facility in Birmingham, CHH have built an enviable reputation in the telecoms market, having designed and integrated cabinets and manufactured cable assemblies into 30,000+ telecoms cabinets (those green boxes you see at the end of most residential streets) to deliver broadband to over 8 million UK subscribers, working with the likes of BT, Vodafone, NEC and EE. Log on to www.chhconex.com and take a virtual tour. In more recent times, CHH have brought their specialist expertise to medical related applications.

Before joining Medilink, CHH invited Services and Membership Manager, Joanne Mewis, and Connectivity Manager, Chris Dyke, to take a factory tour. Chris said: “CHH offer excellent specialist cable assemblies for customers, especially those that need manufactured and assembled electrical control cabinets and control panels. This is also complemented by a logistics process to reduce customer costs and improve efficiencies for field service and maintenance engineers, delivering consumables parts, tooling and personal protective equipment anywhere in the UK.”

CHH have recently been working with a Medical and Life Sciences sector customer, initially supplying cable harness looms, then progressing to the wiring up of their

major electrical control panels and cabinets for their sophisticated biomaterial refrigeration chambers.

CHH sales and Marketing director, kevin Wilcox, said: “When we first met this customer they were going through a transitional period, taking over the manufacturing of large modular plant from their Head Office in the USA. This meant, along with taking over the work of their American subcontractor, their UK cable suppliers couldn’t keep up with their UK demand. This was hitting them hard, with all the uncertainty it caused and the pressure of constantly progress chasing materials from the supply chain. We took all of these headaches away, by being the single point of order for all manufactured cable assemblies. We delivered a fast, responsive and reliable service making sure we were excellent with our communication and support. We were delighted when they made the decision to migrate the outsourcing of their electrical control cabinet integration requirements to CHH. Our goal is always to make things simple for a customer, freeing up their people, cash and space to allow their team to focus on core activities.”

CHH Managing director, tim Hughes, said: “It’s been a great opportunity to work with this customer, understanding their challenges, their operational issues and working closely to create and deliver a cost-effective solution. We have demonstrated that we deliver what we promise and we live by our values of trust, honesty, respect and commitment.”

CHH’s Engineering Team have developed a special Executive Briefing, where they’ll share with you a number of case studies to demonstrate how CHH have achieved outstanding results in cable assembly and cabinet integration solutions. During this 20 minute meeting they’ll share with you how they saved one customer over £594,000 a year, reduce another’s labour costs by £197,000 a year, and helping another complete 800 cabinets in under half the time.

if you’d like CHH to share these valuable insights into what cable assembly, cabinet integration and control panel solutions you could consider implementing in your own business, contact kevin Wilcox on 0121 344 6333 or email him at [email protected] and he’ll arrange a time to visit you.

the Midlands innovation group of universities has launched the largest collaboration between university technology transfer offices in the UK, to attract investment and management talent to the region.

The Midlands Innovation Commercialisation of Research Accelerator (MICRA) will share best practice and share resources across technology transfer offices in Midlands universities. The partnership will support the development of spin-out companies, helping them to obtain finance and expertise, and accelerating the rate at which innovations are able to be commercialised.

The announcement was made at an event held at The University of Birmingham to over 120 invited guests.

The event – which had speakers including Alice Hu-Wagner, Managing Director for Strategy, Policy and Business Development and Markets at the British Business Bank, and Alice Frost, Director of Knowledge Exchange at Research England – outlined the opportunities the Midlands region presents to industry and investors and the value of collaborations and innovation between industry and universities.

Funded by Research England through the Connecting Capability Fund, the event heard about the challenges faced by universities in driving the uptake of their Intellectual Property (IP).

Professor sir david eastwood, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Birmingham, who welcomed guests to the event, said: “The benefits of MICRA to the region will be significant. Strengthening the innovation ecosystem to encourage closer links between the technology transfer offices and high-quality incubation spaces most suitable to individual business needs, will stimulate the growth of innovation-led businesses in the Midlands.”

Helen turner, director of Midlands innovation, said: “Midlands Innovation provides a collaborative structure which enables technology transfer offices to strengthen their capacity and share best practice. By working together MICRA aims to attract large ‘patient capital’ investors who are willing to back new ideas. People with vision and management talent who understand the potential for success in our region.” continue >

Dr James Wilkie, CEO of University of Birmingham enterprise commented: “The UK has eighteen of the 100 most innovative Universities in Europe – and four of these are in the Midlands Innovation partnership. We also have an enviable translational landscape that is attracting increasing attention from overseas, and a rich history of collaboration with companies of all sizes.”

Professor stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Warwick, who invited guests to explore the opportunities offered at the event, said: “The MICRA project shows clearly what can be achieved when universities work together. Drawing on the collective partner strengths is fundamental to what the Midlands Innovation partnership was set up to do.”

Commenting on the MICRA launch event, alice Frost, director of knowledge exchange at Research england, said: “Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund is investing in eighteen projects to demonstrate the world class commercialisation practiced in our universities. This includes MICRA being launched today - an ambitious project bringing together the largest formal technology transfer collaboration in the country, with benefits for

research, the Midlands area and for delivering the Government’s Industrial Strategy and 2.4% target.”

Within easy reach of London, the Midlands is essential to national economic success. The region is responsible for over a fifth of the UK’s total manufacturing capability. The services sector in the Midlands accounts for over four million jobs and is worth around £158 billion a year.

Midlands Innovation unites the power of university research with the unique strengths of Midlands industry to drive pioneering research, innovation, skills development and economic growth. Collectively partners are incubating more than 600 businesses and supporting over 1600 jobs.

MI partners include the universities of Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick. Academics in these universities generate more new inventions and patents per unit of research income than any other UK universities group.

Two years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Fda) published its draft guidance on data integrity, the final guidance remains in the “forthcoming” stage. Meanwhile, regulatory guidelines for ensuring the completeness, consistency and accuracy of data still must be upheld. We are all well aware that there are numerous regulations surrounding data integrity, so i’ll forgo the trite references relating to corralling felines. instead, i will suggest that a good approach to achieving data integrity compliance is to develop a practical data management strategy around data storage and migration.

Perhaps, we can agree that going digital with data management has been both beneficial and somewhat challenging. Certainly, the ability to automate data collection, storage and analysis, as well as immediately access any data in real time has been positive.

On the other hand, the various, continuously changing technologies for storing and migrating data have made maintaining data integrity a bit unwieldy. For example, as data storage infrastructures evolve, data stored for 10 years or longer may not be readable on newer versions of operating systems or applications. Still, data integrity guidelines require that every 1 and 0 of original data remain intact.

Data migration technologies also evolve. Therefore, keeping up your end of the data integrity compliance agreement means you routinely need to move the data you’re trying to keep safe and undisturbed, yet still accessible, to a new system.

data storage

Data integrity guidelines do not prescribe a specific method or technology for data storage. Still, two areas of focus for data storage compliance are integrity and retention.

data integrity – Data integrity is established where the data is stored and managed in its original form. The guidelines for maintaining the integrity of stored data include:

• Data must be the original (or a true copy) and keptsecure from modification, corruption or loss.• Data must be retained throughout the data lifecycle.• Data records must be complete and contain all datahistory information.• Stored data must be accompanied by all metadata, aswell as appropriate validation data.• Data must be stored in a way that prevents deterioration.• Data must be searchable and retrievable for auditsor legal review purposes.
