S A F E T Y F I R S T

We want everyone to develop the habit of thinking about safety not only during a work shift, but on the way home, at home or even on vacation. Thus, think about safety before you start any activity, especially tasks that are highly dangerous (i.e., lighting a gas burner, jump-starting a vehicle, etc.). Think about safety throughout the process; particularly, if you have to change course from your plan. Always ask yourself the following questions:

• Do I know the safe way to complete this job or task? Are they adequate? Do I really understand them?• What personal protective equipment do I need? Are they in good condition? Will they adequately protect me?• What tools and other equipment do I need to do this task safely? Do I have the correct ones? Are they in good condition?• Are there other risks to my safety or the safety of others? What if something happens quickly or unexpectedly? Do I know how to respond to avoid injury?

Below are a list of potentially dangerous “Out of Work” activities and tips on the safe way to complete these:

• Driving: Wear your seatbelt at all times. Adjust your mirrors. Always pay attention to your surroundings. Pull over to use your mobile phone.• Mowing the Lawn: Wear your safety toed shoes and safety glasses.• Starting a Charcoal Grill: Use lighter fluid, not gasoline!• Replacing a light fixture, ceiling fan, or outlet: Always turn off a circuit and test before replacing.• Using a Ladder: Always maintain 3-points of contact. Make sure the ladder is stable. Never stand on the top rung.

How often should we have thoughts about safety? Constantly! The human mind is one of the fastest processors of information. To think about all of this needs to only take a few seconds.

WHAT DOES ‘TAKE SAFETY HOME WITH YOU’ MEAN?

Phillip attributes his ongoing career success to the training and tools Faith Technologies has given to him over the past seven years. Phillip is married to his lovely wife of 10 years, Melissa, and is the proud father of the other light of his life, his beautiful and awesome 3 year old daughter, Maggie. A few things that you may not know about Phillip include how he played soccer growing up, likes listening to the Blues, and his favorite movie is Teen Wolf. P R O J E C T S P O T L I G H T OVATION 309Located in downtown Madison, WI, Ovation 309 is a 14-story, mixed-use building consisting of 248 luxury apartments, retail and commercial space. When complete, the building will house the City of Madison Fire Department Headquarters and more than 350 underground parking stalls. Other unique features will include a rooftop garden and community club room located on the 14th floor.

Faith Technologies’ scope of work on this project included the installation of electrical systems, teledata, fire alarm systems, access control systems, and AV raceways. All of the lighting for this project was shipped to the Excellerate facility in Neenah, WI where it was sorted, prepped and staged. This process was coordinated between the construction team and the prefab department, and allowed for the lighting package to be delivered to the site on time allowing the project team to remain on schedule.

Did You Know?: Ovation 309 is built between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. Due to its location, part of the building is built below a water table, so a pressure slab was engineered to make the bottom of the building waterproof. The design initially failed causing a water leakage. The solution was to drill below the pressure slab and pump in bentonite sludge to seal the building. When another subcontractor drilled through our duct bank containing five conduits and several conductors, sludge began pouring out of the service entrance raceways. It took the crew approximately two weeks to repair the damage, however even with the setback, they were able to meet the permanent power deadline for the project.

Faith Technologies is excited to announce its new internal Electronic Systems Technician (EST) Training Program! Beginning in Fall of 2015, all new Level 1 EST apprentices will begin participating in the internal training program. Current EST apprentices (entering Levels 2-4 in Fall 2015) will remain in their existing program for the duration of their apprenticeship.

Why does Faith Technologies have an internal EST Training Program? With an internal training program, Faith Technologies can incorporate training that includes Standard Operating Procedures, as well as allow individuals to focus on a career path that provides specialized development in areas of interest. The core training will provide a well-rounded systems training for all apprentices, while supporting individual strengths and skills through customized employee development.

How does it work?Apprentices in the internal training program attend school throughout the year at one of a Faith Technologies’ branch offices. The training program is a three year program culminating with the BICSI Technician exam. Apprentices are paid labor to attend class.

Does this affect electrical apprentices? No, electrical apprentices will continue in the program they are already attending. New electrical apprentices will continue to utilize the company’s internal electrical apprenticeship program.

How do I sign up?Interested helpers should contact their project manager to seek approval to apply for the program. After approval is granted, the employee should contact Lindsay Derencius, Apprenticeship Administrator, at 800.677.1506, extension 9838 or [email protected] to go through the application process.
