During the past few weeks, the IT Department
has been busy creating and expanding
Dashboard, the school’s digital environment.
Dashboard allows students to receive
personalised information, data and other
relevant news which helps keep them
informed and engaged in school life.
The new version of Dashboard, in which 800
students took part in testing brings new
personalised data such as students own
attendance percentage, reminders,
homework, detentions and integration with
our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle.
The new version also allows students to further engage and interact with their Student
Council and pupil representatives using the Llais Cyfle tools which allow students to post
suggestions and vote up other suggestions and ideas posted by other students.
A new feature of Dashboard is ‘Memories’ - these digital snapshots allows students to interact
with recent school events, news and achievements and give support for these. The new
version of Dashboard also integrates the brand new school reward system - Cyfle Coins. We
look forward to all students using the brand new version when they return after half term.

We as a Maths department would like to congratulate our Year 11 pupils, who sat their
GCSE in November!
These two classes worked very hard for 7 weeks in the hope to reach their target
grades. They attended extra revision sessions with Mr Davies and ensured that they
worked to the best of their ability on classwork, homework and revision. These great
results reflects the commitment that they showed towards gaining their GCSE in
Maths.
These results show that we gained an extra 26 C grades and an extra 10 A* to B
grades on the Newtown campus. I would like to also mention that we saw some pupils
move up two grades in such a short time, which has to be congratulated. These pupils
are: Justice Dean, Freya Bond, Liam Irving, Oliver Hawkins, Lily Mitchell, Maria Smith and
Bethany Wilson.
At the John Beddoes Campus, the pupils have also worked really hard during the 7
weeks, attending revision sessions during LMT, lunch and after school. The recent
results show that we gained an extra 7 C grades and an extra 6 A* to B grades.
I would like to also mention that we saw some pupils show a massive improvement and
move up by over 40 marks or two grades in such a short time, which has to be
congratulated. These pupils are: Tamera Farell, Josh Porter, Inez Schnierer, Ellie Niblock
and Oliver Latham.
Congratulations again, as this means that currently 65.3% have achieved at least a
grade in GCSE Maths. I hope that this will encourage others in Year 11, who are sitting
their GCSE in June, to remain focused in lessons, to complete all homework and to
revise regularly to ensure more success in August.

The annual Rotary organised
Young Chef Competition was held
at our Newtown Campus in
January with 6 students
participating. Judged by chef
royalty, Neil Roberts who is local to
Newtown along with taste testers
from Rotary itself, a high quality of
food was on offer. Students were
tasked with creating a healthy
meal to develop their food
presentation skills along with
considering food hygiene
standards and development of
their organisational and planning skills. There was certainly a high standard on offer
and the contest was very close indeed. The winning dish was served by Kyle Rowlands
and consisted of a chicken liver pate, Madeira pork and chocolate and raspberry
tartlets. Coming in second place was George Betton with his wild mushroom
bruschetta, chicken casserole with dumplings and sticky toffee date pudding and third
place was Liam Morris who made a stuffed mushrooms, chicken casserole and
pineapple upside down. Kyle will now cook his menu with Mr Roberts at the annual
Rotary Dinner held on the 26th April 2016.
Newtown High School also played host to the annual Urdd Cogurdd competition in
which 5 students took part in the first
round. The task was to create
flatbreads, pea hummus and a
tropical fruit salsa, as well as making
and decorating carrot cupcakes all
within one hour and 30 minutes. A
massive thanks to Mrs Heulwen
Jones who kindly judged this stage of
the competition with Lowri Francis
and Josh Wall going through to the
next round. Congratulations to all
give participants who had a very
hectic hour and half in the kitchen,
producing credible finished work.

Written by Mr Lemon - Drama
As Drama Teacher here at Newtown High School, I'm proud to say that our imminent
production of John Godber's Teechers has sold out the extended allocation of tickets
for our 3 nights of performance.
An incredible amount of work both by actors and technical workers has been put in
since undertaking the production and I'm sure all of you who have got tickets will
thoroughly enjoy the production.
The play is a fast paced comedy about school life as told by those on the inside
throught the lives of three school leavers. We have adapted the script to modernise
and localise it and you may even see some people you know.

Last term, all Year 7 pupils on our Newtown Campus learnt words from a list of 50
which they then practise spelling. Congratulation to all of our Year 7 pupils who did try
very hard and make some amazing progress, bravo!
In each class, we asked for volunteers to try and spell those words out loud using the
French alphabet in December. The class winners are the pupils who managed to spell
the most French words accurately under a minute:

Goosebumps (PG)
When the monstrous creations of Goosebumps author R. L. Stine
(Jack Black) escape from a series of magic books that act as their
prisons, only Stine and a motley crew of teenagers can stop the
rampage of the escaped beasts!
Why should you go see it?
OK. It sounds terrible! You will read the synopsis and think “ohh
deeaarr”! But trust me…… it ain’t half bad! Its very tongue in cheek, it
knows it’s a very silly film, but that just adds to the charm of it. The
cast do a very good job of keeping the story going in a fun and light-
hearted way without ever becoming annoying as is so often the case
with children in films. Jack Black, who can often go OTT with his
roles, is also on good form and plays the oddball author with much
energy. Definitely a guilty pleasure of a film!
Dad’s Army (12A)
Walmington-On-Sea, 1944. With Allied forces poised to invade Nazi-
held France, the fate of the world lies in the hands of a Home Guard
unit filled with complete idiots. Don’t panic!
Why should you go see it?
Let be honest…. the only reason pupils from Newtown High School
are going to go and see this is when their dad’s drag them too see it.
But I really think you should go and see this off your own back! For
one thing you will never see a more quintessentially British film this
year… or maybe ever! We Brits have a very different brand of
humour to the Americans so there's no fart jokes or pointless bad
language here…. I would say its more like an old Carry On Film in
style, and in my mind praise doesn't come much higher than that.
Its not perfect by any means, the plots all over the place and the
script is a bit dodgy, but its enormously entertaining for the whole
family and definitely worth a trip to the Cinema.
So its February. Not usually the best time for films. This is the time of year when studios bring out their
quirky numbers that they feel are more risky in terms of Box Office figures compared to those in
Easter and Summer. However, I love this time of year! For a start the weather is SO horrendous you
don't feel guilty going to the cinema loads; and secondly the films that come out are not really that
heavily publicised so you can actually go in without knowing that much about films and be genuinely
surprised when you find something you think is great. This is true for both the films in this edition, you
might not have heard of them and they are a bit out of the ordinary but none the less, well worth a
watch. Enjoy!
