BIG BOYS is a satirical look at the men of big business - that “evil empire” we call Corporate America.

The play is fast, funny and absurd, with a strong tip of the hat to the rhythms of the Marx Brothers, Sam Spade, Airplane and even Denny Crane. At the center of this whirlwind are two men, the ethically challenged Victor Burlington and the nice-in-the-face-of-all-odds Norman Waterbury. Orloff keeps us laughing at Vic-tor’s absurd behavior and brutally honest lust for money, sex and power. But while we laugh at Victor, we recognize this same greed as what fueled the devastating financial crises that we find our country in today. The conflict that Orloff has set up is a familiar one. Can a person of ethics and high ideals withstand a world of murky morals and corruption? Will Norm’s purity of heart be compromised and become part of the corporate machine? You know - that whole good vs. evil thing. In the most popular versions of this story, “good” wins hands down (George Bailey vs. Mr. Potter, Mr. Smith vs. Washington). In real life, however, my experience has been that evil runs the show (pretty much every politi-cian I’ve ever believed in). In BIG BOYS, Rich Orloff offers us a 3rd option. I don’t want to give away the ending, but pay close attention to Norm’s final philosophy. I think it might just be how we need to proceed as the nation navigates its way through our current eco/political challenges into a new age. We have to find a new way, right? Mary
