These included strengthened protection for biodiversity, frameworks for dealing with dumping and encroachment in bushland, preparing Ku-ring-gai for the challenges of climate change and managing water and catchments. With Sydney’s population set to expand to 5 million within the next three years, according to latest predictions, it’s even more important for councils such as ours to be proactive in our stewardship of the natural environment. If you are interested in finding out more about these new policies please visit www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/sustainability The Council has been contacted in recent weeks by residents concerned about the appearance of street trees pruned by Ausgrid contractors and after inspection by Council staff, we agree. Our Council voted this week to approach local MPs and the NSW Ministers for the Environment and Energy as a matter of urgency to seek a review of Ausgrid’s pruning standards. We understand the need to keep trees away from powerlines but in streets across Killara, Lindfield and Gordon beautiful mature native trees have in some cases been reduced to mere stumps. I will keep you advised of the state government’s response to our concerns. One of our most idyllic public gardens – Swain Gardens at 77 Stanhope Street Killara – has just undergone a makeover for outdoor events such as weddings and other celebrations. Covering three hectares, Swain Gardens were bequeathed to the Ku-ring-gai community by Arthur (Mick) Newling Swain back in 1982. The gardens are managed as community land by the Council and supported by the Friends of Swain Gardens, a group of dedicated volunteers. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends, Council staff have laid an all-weather surface near the patio and BBQ area of the gardens. If you haven’t yet visited this hidden gem in Ku-ring-gai, it’s well worth a visit. Swain Gardens are open daily and entry is free. Visit www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/swaingardens Spring will soon be here and heralding its arrival is our annual celebration at the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden in St Ives on Sunday 28 August. This is a chance to experience the delightful sight of spring wildflowers beginning to bloom, while at the same time enjoying live music, a sculpture walk, plant sales and market stalls. Full details at www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/wildflowerfestival Finally, we have received a number of enquiries about local government elections in Ku-ring-gai. Local government elections are normally held every four years. However, due to the NSW Government’s proposal to merge Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby Councils, the elections planned for September 2016 have been postponed until September 2017. Therefore voters in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby will not take part in this year’s NSW local government elections. Ku-ring-gai Council will however elect a new Mayor on 20 September, assuming that our Council continues in its current form. We are awaiting the decision of the Land & Environment Court on our action to prevent the forced merger between Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby Council to be handed down this month.
