  • SMARTLINE‐DLR iden fies transmission line power carrying capacity in real‐ me.

SMARTLINE‐DLR is a next genera on transmission line dynamic ra ng system using real‐ me weather and measured conductor data ‐including mid‐span clearance‐to‐ground ‐ to determine power capacity.

How are Transmission Lines Rated? Transmission line ra ng is dependent on several environmental variables, including: Heat generated in the line (resistance and current); Heat being added to the line (solar radia on); Heat being removed from the line (convec ve and radiated

cooling) due to wind and precipita on.

Tradi onal opera onal limits of a transmission line are established through “sta c” transmission line ra ng methodologies. Common prac ce is to select very conserva ve values for the environmental opera ng condi ons of the line. The result is both a low probability that conductor sag will exceed opera onal or regulatory limits for even a very short dura on, and a very conserva ve ra ng of the line.

What is Dynamic Line Ra ng? Seasonally adjusted ra ngs (SAR) and ambient adjusted ra ngs (AAR) are commonly used today to increase a line’s sta c ra ng by acknowledging different environmental condi ons exist at different mes of the year. Dynamic Line Ra ng, or DLR, is a transmission line’s actual, real‐ me, power carrying capacity

based on the conductor’s actual opera ng temperature using real‐ me line behavior data and weather condi ons. DLR is the natural and logical extension of seasonal and ambient adjusted ra ngs.

What is SMARTLINE‐DLR SMARTLINE‐DLR is the next genera on of DLR. Compared with tradi onal DLR systems, SMARTLINE‐DLR:

Ensures clearance‐to‐ground limits are not exceeded by using real‐ me direct clearance‐to‐ground measurements of the conductor provided by Lindsey TLM™ conductor monitors.

Eliminates the dependence on look‐up tables and “as designed” line data. Learning‐based algorithms ac vely learn line behavior, resul ng in much more accurate ra ngs than look‐up table based methods. This method also properly reflects “as‐built” line condi ons as compared to using “as‐designed” assump ons.

SMARTLINE‐DLR use completely self‐contained conductor line monitors that encompass auxiliary power, communica ons, and all measurement sensors. These monitors eliminate both the need to de‐energize the lines and to make expensive modifica ons to transmission towers.

Cost Effec ve Alterna ve to Reconductoring SMARTLINE–DLR can quickly document 10‐25% addi onal capacity availability on exis ng lines, allowing for deferral or elimina on of reconductoring projects.

Recognize Extreme Events Extreme events, such as severe ice loading or emergency loading condi ons, are recognized. Resul ng changes in conductor behavior are automa cally incorporated in SMARTLINE‐DLR ra ngs.

Clearance Cri cal Span Measurements The SMARTLINE‐DLR system uses data from Lindsey TLM conductor monitors which may be placed on all clearance cri cal spans on a transmission line. The measurement of actual cri cal span clearance makes obsolete the need to use data from several spans away to infer cri cal span clearance.

Clearance Monitoring SMARTLINE‐DLR ra ngs are based on con nuous geospa al clearances; a requirement of legal and safety standards. Clearance compliance to standards is directly monitored and conductor behavior is learned and understood.

Forecast Capacity Ra ngs SMARTLINE‐DLR forms the basis for line capacity forecasts provided by Lindsey’s SMARTLINE‐TCF transmission capacity forecas ng system. SMARTLINE‐TCF provides high accuracy capacity forecasts in 1– to 48‐hour increments. SMARTLINE‐TCF may be added at any me.
