STORAGE SOLUTIONS WITH AWS DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY

POWERING NEXT GENERATION STORAGE SOLUTIONS WITH AWS- SAMPLE REFERENCE ARCHITECTURES

Hybrid Storage Reference Architectures

Leveraging the premium partnership with AWS, Cognizant has developed a rich set of Hybrid Storage solutions which include both native AWS tools and an extensive partner ecosystem of Cognizant. These well-tested and validated architectures are generally customized to the needs of client’s environment and employ the best practices of both AWS and the partner’s tool. They are further integrated into Cognizant’s Cloud360, a comprehensive platform for automated service delivery and managed services.

The five storage variants and their reference architecture diagrams are as below. These are sample reference architectures and can be customized as per client’s requirements.

In this architecture, either partner gateway or AWS’ storage gateway is used to connect to AWS storage services in a variety of ways such as file storage, block storage etc. In the following sample architecture, AWS’ storage gateway service is used to present S3 as file storage to on-premises infrastructure.

Primary Storage

Fig 1. Using AWS Storage Gateway as File Gateway for Primary Storage

Benefits

• Virtually unlimited storage

• S3 objects presented as files

• Tiered storage for non-production workloads

• Data ingestion for cloud workloads

• Seamless backup and archival

• Staging for cloud data management tools

While AWS’ storage gateway may be used where the bandwidth requirements are low, partner’s tools are typically used to leverage the benefits offered by them such as de-duplication, compression and encryption.

In the above diagram, AWS storage gateway is used as a ‘tape gateway’.

Data Archival architectures can be either extended data protection solutions or standalone solutions depending on the client’s environment. The choice of tools from Cognizant provide the best scenario for directly archiving to Amazon Glacier. Below diagram depicts a typical scenario.

Remote and/or Branch offices are to be treated exclusively given the requirements of high latency, low bandwidth, sustained application performance, mobility requirements and centralized management. These reference architectures integrate a variety of partner solutions providing benefits such as WAN optimizers, caching appliances etc. under the umbrella of Cognizant’s Cloud360 platform for centralized monitoring and management.

Following diagram illustrates a typical ROBO setup with a partner’s solution.

Benefits

• Up to 90% reduction on time, cost and data volume

• Reduces recovery time from days to minutes/hours

• 85% backup and software providers supported

• Integrates with major backup and archival solutions

• De-duplicates, encrypts and compresses data

• Keeps recent backups locally and vaults everything to AWS

Benefits

• Low cost and highly durable backup solution

• No physical media handling which prohibits the risk of data loss due to poor handling of tapes

• Automated retention policies

• Provides disaster recovery platform
