With this said, there was a perfect balance between education, free time and fun group activities. Speaking on behalf of all the students on the trip, I think its fair to say that the lava show in Vik, where we were able to witness 1100°c lava flows first hand and the blue lagoon visit were both extraordinary and luxurious opportunities to be a part of. Overall I would like to extend my gratitude out towards all three of the teachers who accompanied us, Mr James, Mr McCulloch and Dr Fretwell for making the trip so enjoyable for all of us and of course putting up with us. Next Week: Iceland 2019

Iceland was a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for me and many of my peers, experiencing many new

things and reaching new heights. On arrival we were taken by coach to see the Eurasian / North

American plate boundary, where divergent plates are visibly apart. Within the heavy snow shower,

we walked across one continental plate boundary to the other. Later on that day, came one of my

favourite experiences; caving just outside Reykjavik, here we explored 400m into the iced caves and

were able to experience a state of complete darkness!

Next, we climbed the Solheimajokull glacier. It was a challenging but a fairly short hike; our guide

was very enthusiastic and explained every question we asked. The crampons provided a great grip

as we ascended upwards. The ash from recent and historic eruptions left a fascinating black cast

over the ice and snow. Once we reached the top of the glacial walk, we had a great view of the

mountain ranges and a breath-taking view of the glacial lagoon.

Being accommodated in hostels for the first time was a great laugh with my peers and we managed

to entertain one another throughout the night. It was amusing to say the least despite the lack of

sleep we all got!

As a whole, the trip proved to be very educational, learning about the history of Iceland and trau-

matic volcanic events leading to the formation of the island and many of its geographical features. I

feel that my knowledge of tectonics and volcanic landforms has developed so much due to the

visitation of the geothermal power plant, the geysers, the black beach, hot springs and the Iceland-

ic lava museum. With this said, there was a perfect balance between education, free time and fun

group activities.

Speaking on behalf of all the students on the trip, I think its fair to say that the lava show in Vik,

where we were able to witness 1100°c lava flows first hand and the blue lagoon visit were both

extraordinary and luxurious opportunities to be a part of.

Overall I would like to extend my gratitude out towards all three of the teachers who accompanied

us, Mr James, Mr McCulloch and Dr Fretwell for making the trip so enjoyable for all of us and of

course putting up with us. I would highly recommend anyone lucky enough to be a part of the

Iceland school trip in the future, to make the most of the opportunity as you will not regret a single

second of it.

Hockey Report

Tuesday evening saw the 1st XI travel to the Olympic

Park to take on Eltham College in the National Stadi-

um.

Langley made an impressive start, with Oscar Beaman-

Browne fashioning a number of opportunities, one of

which led to our first penalty corner. Captain for the

day, Joe Mulholland sent a rasping drag flick past the

keeper’s stick side to open the scoring. However, their

joy was to be short lived, as Eltham responded imme-

diately with a penalty corner of their own to tie the

scores.

The rest of the half remained in the balance as Lang-

ley tried to find ways around Eltham’s zonal press. If

anything though, Eltham had more territory, whilst

Langley looked dangerous on the counter attack but

were repelled by the Eltham keeper.

The second half saw Langley resume with renewed

focus and energy, resulting in a series of turnovers in

dangerous positions. The midfield of Sam de Vaux,

Seb Dodds, Stephen Barratt and Charlie Byrne set the

tempo playing aggressive man to man and were ably

supported by the intensity of the forwards. This led to

Langley’s second goal, with Sam de Vaux calmly slot-

ting home a rebound from the top of the circle off his

back foot. De Vaux was excellent all day, playing with

real maturity and setting up multiple attacks to thor-

oughly earn the man of the match award.

Disappointingly, despite continuing to dominate the

game, Eltham drew level with a penalty corner against

the run of play.

However, Langley were much more dominant in the

second period and found themselves with a series of

chances to regain their lead. Joshua Dodds hammered

home a reverse to restore the advantage and the

squad were frustrated they were not able to extend

their lead further with dubious decision making our

forwards in the shooting circle.

This was a hard fought win for the squad who re-

sponded well after half time to deserve their win.

Thank you to Eltham for hosting the fixture.

Mr J Batten

U18 Squash Report U18 Squash Team finish 3rd in the National

Schools Finals for 2nd Year running

Congratulations to the U18 Squash team who

made the school proud once again when they

returned to the National Schools Finals in Not-

tingham for the 3rd year running. Seeded 4th out

of the 8 quarter finalists meant that Langley

Park faced the daunting prospect of facing Mill-

field School in the first game of the day at the

quarter final stage. Despite Millfield boasting a

proud record in this competition and an all-star

international line-up the Langley players

showed great resilience to battle back from 0-1

and 1-2 down in matches to see the game out

at 3 games to 2, with Tom Dean, Jack Mitterer

and James Gibbins getting hard fought victo-

ries. The semi-final line-up pitted Langley Park

against the favourites and 1st seeded Ackworth

School from Yorkshire. Jude Gibbins got Lang-

ley Park off to the perfect start with a fine 2

games to nil victory in the 5th string match, an

incredible performance for an 11 year-old still

in year 7! Ackworth pulled the match back to 1

apiece before the game of the tournament took

place between the number 1 string Jack Mitter-

er and his opponent from Ackworth who is

hailed as the rising star of England Squash. Af-

ter losing the first game Jack put in one of his

greatest ever performances to first get back on

level terms, and then inflict a rare defeat on his

Ackworth counterpart after a nailbiting last

game and put Langley in the ascendancy. It was

down to his brother Michael Mittterer to try to

put the finish touches on an unlikely victory.

Performing heroically Michael once again took

the game into the decider and with scores at 10

-10 in the 3rd and only 2 points from victory

Michael could not quite get over the finishing

line and undeservedly slipped to defeat. Ack-

worth won the final match-up of a pulsating

clash to send them through to the final vs Wyc-

liffe and Langley into the 3rd/4th playoff vs

Aylesbury Grammar School. For the second

year running Langley Park defeated Aylesbury

by 3 games to 2, with James Gibbins starring in

the deciding match, to take home bronze med-

als as third placed school in the entire country.

All boys should be extremely proud of their

incredible performances both in the qualifying

rounds on the way to the National Finals as well

as on the day itself. To finish third and get so

close to the final itself was an unbelievable

achievement and as the only State Comprehen-

sive School present in Nottingham the players

did their school extremely proud.

Year 11

Countdown to GCSEs – 4 teaching weeks

There are now only four teaching weeks until the GCSE

examinations commence on Monday 13th May. Thank

you for your ongoing support in preparing students for

their examinations.

Revision Skills and Resources

Please click here for a link to a booklet of Top Tips from

Heads of Department to further boost students’ revision.

This contains three top tips and three top resources for

subjects. We hope that this is useful for these final weeks

of revision. A reminder also to continue to use the Revi-

sion Planner, Handbook and the 12 key revision tech-

niques sent out last week.

Report Week 3

Year 11 Reports have now been published to parents.

Please do take some time to look over the report with

your son, and to discuss with him the areas he needs to

focus on during the remaining weeks before the exams.

A reminder that a small number of students will be invit-

ed to attend Progress Review Meetings with Mr Mat-

thews and Mrs Siddell before the end of term as a result

of this most recent data. These students and parents are

already aware of these meetings.

Post-16 Options

Well done to all students who attended this very suc-

cessful event on Tuesday, during which they met a range

of employers and post-16 providers and learnt about

different options and pathways. The students were a

credit to the school and many used this as a valuable

networking opportunity to gain contacts for their next

steps.

Work Experience

We are asking all students to complete a work experi-

ence placement or voluntary work during the long sum-

mer holidays following the GCSE examinations. This type

of experience is becoming increasingly important for

applications to university and the workplace and is a vital

way of developing employability skills. An email will go

out next week with full details of this – apologies for the

delay with this paperwork.

Careers Meetings

The final careers interviews of the year for Year 11 will

take place next week. Thank you to all students for en-

gaging with this valuable interviews in such a positive

and productive way.

Support and Intervention Sessions

Departments are continuing to run intervention sessions

and drop-ins each week –

Friends

as always, please do get in touch with a Head of Depart-

ment or subject teacher if you have a query about a par-

ticular subject area . Thank you for your ongoing support

to ensure that students are working hard and that exam

preparation is their priority.

Sixth Form Applications

Thank you to all students who have submitted an appli-

cation for the Sixth Form. We have now begun pro-

cessing these applications and will be in touch in due

course with dates for Sixth Form interviews. These inter-

views take place with a senior member of staff and are

an opportunity to review a student’s subject choices,

discuss the entry criteria for these and to look at possi-

ble career pathways. Parents are also welcome to attend

these meetings. A reminder that the minimum entry cri-

teria for admission to the Sixth Form are at least two

Grade 6s, two Grade 5s and at least a Grade 4 in English

and Maths. Students at risk of not achieving these

grades must have a back-up option in place, such as an

application to a college or other post-16 provider. Stu-

dents must also achieve the entry criteria for individual

subject - please see the Sixth Form Prospectus for details

of these.

Music week was a busy period for the Friends;

we hosted a bar for each of evening's events. It

was wonderful to be part of the festival atmos-

phere whilst raising funds for the school. Next

term, we will continue our fundraising efforts.

Why not join us? We promise you'll enjoy it!
