Hello Everyone, I would like to personally thank all of the folks that attended the DAAS auction on January 18; despite the bad weather we had a great turnout. There was a varied selection of fish and dry goods. I didn't plan to buy any fish (no tank space), but you know how that ends up… There are several NEC club auctions coming up in February and March, please check the NEC newsletter and calendar... After about a year of gathering background information, working with the accountant and IRS, the NEC was finally granted a 501c3 exemption. There are a few more loose ends to tie up, but we are there!!! Clubs: please ensure that Barb Romeo gets the updates for the contact list if your club has held elections. Please check the NEC calendar for upcoming shows/auctions and make sure to send Barb Romeo information/fliers on your club events. Don't forget to get out there and support our sister clubs, you'll have a great time doing it.... Please mark your calendar: the next NEC convention will be held on March 20-22, 2015 at the Rocky Hill Sheraton. The convention is put on for the benefit of the NEC members, so we ask that you help us by supporting this event. Report from the 1st Annual Al Faul Memorial Breeders Auction (1/19/15) by Russ McAndrews

The "Al Faul Memorial" was a great success! There were about 50 persons in attendance, almost half of them guests. I was happy to see a few junior members. Numerous sister clubs were present. I'm happy to announce that the Boston Aquarium Society raised more than $1,000 for Project Piaba. - Good Luck Scott!

Great Inexpensive Meeting Program

As a monthly meeting program operative for both the North Jersey Aquarium Society and the Gold Coast Aquarium Society I would like to report on a program concept that worked very well for GCAS. And best of all, didn’t cost the club a dime. The initiative was to fill in a program at the club meeting; the constraints were to spend as little as possible; the results were that we had a forced attendance by 15 members, a rise in member participation, an opportunity for the one or two tank member to share their hobby with others, and a better look into what other hobbyists are about. We asked any and all members to forward one to three photos of their favorite home aquarium. They could do this by email, texting or posting on Facebook. Then the program chair (me) would collect these photos and put them into a Power Point program in the order in which they were received. The photos need not be pro-quality, just clear enough to get a good idea of what we were looking at. We had 15 members forward photos that were placed in the PP program. On the night of the meeting, my first slide was a list showing the order of which members’ photos would be displayed so they could be ready. When the member’s photo was put up on the screen, that member would stand up and explain what we were looking at (a wireless microphone comes in handy here). And the attendees got to ask questions. The next time we do this, I think we’ll use a timer and a bell….as it turns out, the quiet, shy members were the most talkative! Chuck Davis

Our First Workshop….by David Banks, NEC Historian

The First NEC Workshop, as they were known for the first 21 years, took place in Westport, CT on May 22-23, 1976. It was a joint effort by the NEC and the Mid-Atlantic Aquarium Council. See the article that appeared in Aquarium News in August of that year. (Editor’s Note: see the NEC Facebook page for the view of the 1st NEC workshop program, a write up that was written by Penny Faul and 3 photo albums of past NEC program covers at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Northeast-Council-of-Aquarium-Societies/243913172321) The article in Aquarium News was written by Tony Terceira who was also one of the speakers at the first workshop and someone who you all probably still know today as a speaker on killifish and photography. This was also the first time our own Wayne Liebel spoke at any convention. Of course it would not be his last! The last speaker I would like to mention is of course Lee Finley, Lee has spoken at more NEC conventions than any other speaker, closely followed by Wayne and Tony for the number of time they spoke. We were, and still are, very lucky to have talented speakers like this living in the northeast! I will continue to post on Facebook info about the next 38 conventions leading up to the 40th that takes place on March 20-22, 2015 in Rocky Hill, CT.
