Q: Why is good

attendance important?

A: So you get a higher

grade !

This means:

You get a better job or go to a better university

Earn more for the rest of your life

Attendance + Punctuality

= Success

…/Continued from page 1

The finalists were chosen based on the

level of creativity and the ability to

demonstrate this year's theme of ‘What

Matters Most’.

Alice, who studied A Levels at The Isle

of Wight College when she submitted

her entry, said “I was recommended to

enter the competition by my A2

Photography teachers Hannah and

Arlene. The title of the brief was ‘What

Matters Most’, and I entered a couple

of my photographs from my A Level

project; one of my grandparents and

one of a couple of family friends, both

in their homes, surrounded by things

important to them. I received a phone

call from the Association of Colleges

telling me that one of my photographs

had been selected and I was a finalist -

I was not told which picture had been

selected until later”.

The winner of the Association of

Colleges Student Photographer of the

Year 2015 and runners-up will be

announced at AoC’s Annual

Conference and Exhibition in

Birmingham later in November.

Good luck Alice!

National Award For Biodiversity Challenge

An Island project to sustain urban biodiversity in a small corner of Newport has won a national award! The Abbey Mews Apple Project was chosen from 40 entries to win its category in the Big Biodiversity Challenge 2015, run by the UK Construction Industry body CIRIA. The project was a collaboration between Arc Consulting, the college’s horticulture team, Island fruit tree specialists Deacons, and David Wilson Homes. Paul Coleman, from the college said “We have planted a selection of trees to make the most of the fruit season, so residents will benefit from a very early eating apple as well as a later cooking variety. One of the trees is a Howgate Wonder (a cross between Newton Wonder and Blenheim Orange apples) which produces very large apples”. The Howgate Wonder is reputed to be the Island’s very own apple. It was in 1915 that retired policeman George Wratten raised an apple seedling in Bembridge. It is the world’s largest variety and record holder. The prize to the college of £250 of National Garden Centre vouchers, will be spent on the college’s grounds.

NEW Futsal Academy

The new Futsal Arena is now ready and looking good. It is situated in Manners View which is adjacent to college campus but accessible from River Way, Newport. The sport flooring that has been installed is an amazing multi-sport system and it will also cater for basketball, roller derby and many other sports. Members of the public will have access to leagues, tournaments and pitch hires as well as kids' parties, after school clubs and holiday camps. The state-of-the-art arena model includes the same flooring used by FIFA in their Futsal World Cup, as well as electronic scoreboards and viewing areas all housed within a vibrant urban feel. Futsal courses are sport and work-skills study programmes which includes employability skills and careers advice, as well as being the first programme of its kind in the UK to feature Futsal as an enrichment. This involves four hours of

training per week, which is assisted with the inclusion of the world's first dedicated Futsal coaching syllabus. The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is a national qualification which is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels. This creates multiple career progression pathways including employment within the rapidly expanding Sport and Active Leisure industry as well as Higher Education and international Futsal scholarships.

Furthermore, the courses are delivered using @Futsal Group's bespoke virtual learning platform, called 'Inspire'. This allows students to work remotely on electronic devices, whilst having online access to the very latest study content and tutor assessment. The blended approach to learning is specifically tailored towards contemporary study patterns and is designed to provide both students and tutors with as much support as possible.

Transforming 4693 Lives In Nepal ADSM The water and energy efficiency experts have helped The Isle of Wight College to transform over 4,693 lives in rural Nepal through Aquafund. The money the college has saved in water efficiencies has been donated to Aquafund to give water aid to the people in rural Nepal. This has enabled improved sanitation and hygiene for 4,693 people; has provided 6 new gravity flow water systems supplying 67 tap stands

and made six communities free from open defecation. This project’s focus was to improve the health and living standards of communities located deep within the rural hills of Sankhuwashabha District in Eastern Nepal. This was a particularly challenging project as Nepal’s extreme and remote hill landscape has significantly hindered the delivery of basic services, and in turn the ability of people to lift themselves out of poverty. Women walk miles every day along steep mountain paths to collect water that is often unclean. Many children, especially girls, are unable to attend school due to time spent collecting water for household use.

Keeping Our Learners Happy No matter what our students are studying they all expect easy access to the wired and wireless networks for their smartphones, tablets and laptops and need to connect to the network from anywhere and anytime. During peak times a couple of thousand devices connect to the network.

Whatever the time or day, students and staff, and faculty expect the network to deliver consistent and continuous high performance. The College is pleased to announce that it now uses Brocade wired and Aruba wireless networks to supply a scalable network supply. This means it is easy to add more switches when required and has quickly brought our new buildings online to keep our learners happy
