Why are some sayings appropriate for some emotions and situations?

For example, if someone came into the room now injured and in a state of extreme distress, would it be acceptable for me to say, ‘Cor blimey’?

What would you think?

gorry by jingo by gee by gosh by gum

Listing them in this way gives them a nonsensical or humorous quality, or

possibly mocks those who use such meaningless

sentiments.

Irony

Page 22: Next to god america i 3

Irony1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the

 opposite of its literal meaning

The irony of her reply, “How nice!” when he said he had no homework.

2. Literature . A

technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

The only ironic thing about this song is that all of the examples she gives are not ironic!

Irony

•Although the poem is against patriotism, it achieves its message ironically. On the surface the actual statements and fragments of language are from patriotic address, the sort of cliché laden speeches that are given by politicians and at Fourth of July Addresses.

Page 26: Next to god america i 3

Go through the poem and identify irony. (Where you think it is clear the message the poet is giving is not the initial patriotic poem that we may have expected.)

Page 27: Next to god america i 3
